Out Chasing Stars

Welcome to Out Chasing Stars! We're Admiral Amy and Captain David and we're currently sailing the world on s/v Starry Horizons, our Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 catamaran. This channel has been a labor of love for almost 9 years as we documented our entire world circumnavigation. It's been so much fun to share our adventures and we love reading all the comments and support!

July 22, 2023 Update: We're taking a step back from making videos to focus on other projects. We're still out sailing though, so keep an eye out for Starry Horizons and stop in to say hi!

David's Project:

We replaced our DST-800 with an 810 a couple of years ago after we were hit by lightning and the transducer quit working (along with just about everything else electronic on the boat.) The new app is nice and well-appreciated due to the pain of trying to set offsets on multiple displays. Calibrating the data source only once is better. The new water wheel seems to foul a lot quicker and easier than the old style. That's a pain but the excellent water stopper gate makes pulling the transducer for cleaning super easy and low stress. Changing the transducer creates about a half quart of.water inside the boat. We rarely pull or.change ours until the wheel is fouled or we are hauling out. Installing the plug before hauling out is a good idea. Definitely make sure there is no water in there above the O-ring(s) if you expect freezing temperatures as any moisture in there could freeze and damage the plastic thru-hull. On our transducer the water temp stopped working almost immediately but we never used it anyhow.

According to an Airmar install video, the black seal is actually mean for retrofitting the new transducer to the older thru-hull fitting (if you already have one in place).

Looks like you started quite the debate on bronze vs Marlon and a sub debate on whether your old fittings were brass or bronze. Great video! I recall that you all are moving away from KZread and have other irons in the fire you are tending. Good luck on those new endeavors and thank you for all the great content. One question concerning your project, I noticed you took all the paint and barrier coat off when replacing fittings...required for bedding compounds to mate to gelcoat and not paint. But then you put strainers over the through hull fittings leaving bare gelcoat exposed under the strainer...or so it would appear. Are you concerned at all with this little bit of gelcoat being exposed under the strainer w/out any barrier coat and/or ablative paint? I will be doing this same project this fall and am trying to learn all I can from those who have already done it. Again, thank you!

If you walk around a room that means its a sphere? Sailing should prove the opposite. You wouldn't be able to use the stars as a reliable navigation if we were hurting and spinning through space while the sun and the galaxy was spinning and hurtling through space. There would be no fixed north star in the center

I am pretty sure if an advanced alien race come here on earth it would do something similar to what colonisers did. There is a possibility that they find us primitive and do nasty things.

I just stumbled on this video and really appreciate the making of it, I will definitely subscribe to pick up all of your videos on this subject. I haven’t got my head around OpenCPN as yet, but wish to learn as we have as our boat is fitted with a lot of legacy equipment Raytheon/Raymarine RL70 displays, radar, wind and depth/speed/temp transducers. I have recently installed a Raymarine AIS700 and connected this via an NMEA 2000 backbone, which, in turn, I have linked into a Digital Yacht IKommunicate NMEA 0183/2000 to Signal K Gateway, this I have connected to a wireless router on Cloud Nine, I have taken NMEA 0183 data from the back of the Raymarine Tridata instrument, and can see most of our data on Navionics loaded onto iPads, this is picking up the AIS data via our WiFi on board (just using a domestic old router). We also use a laptop as a back up to the RL70 chartplotters, using a product called PCPlotter, this has Navionics charts loaded as well. So OpenCPN seems a sensible way to go to give us an alternative chart software, at the moment we have to buy Navionics licences for each device. One question, ahead of looking at your other videos, where I may well find the answer!, will OpenCPN pick up and work with Signal K data?

Thanks for the video. I just received my DST 810. I applied marine grease to the o-rings and was trying the fitting of the plug and transducer in the housing and it is so tight that I can barely remove them by hand. Did you experience the same? Are those easier to remove once the boat is in the water? Thanks.

A minor correction perhaps. I think of amperage more as “volume” when compared to the water analogy. “Speed” is more related to velocity with water.

Thank you for the great videos, watched your Top 10 series during Covid, then got a boat. We saw you all in Georgetown Exumas in winter 22, and just now bought a FP Helia 44 and you came up again on google, so now I’m rewatching all your videos to know what to expect and see if there’s any hidden tips/tricks. We are currently circumnavigating, had to pause to deliver our daughter and swap boats for the expanded family, but these videos from years ago are still relevant.

I followed this tutorial by downloading the programs and installing them as you do. But at 8:55 your map menu shows more choices than I have in SASPlanet. Specifically I don't have Marine Maps as a choice and I can't find Navionics Marine Charts like you have. Do I need to change a setting or do anything else to get these charts like you show? This is a great tutorial for step-by-step instructions on how to make charts for OpenCPN, well done!

Nevermind, I figured it out. I pressed the N hotkey and the Navionics Chart appeared in the viewer and it created the Marine Maps directory as you show in the video. Not sure why it didn't show after the installation.

Water dissipated heat is an unnecessary mess. 8000 BTU's is way too large for most boats. A good video should tell how to budget wattage and how to make cooling effective and not waste it.

If you buy the B&G Triton package through Defender you get this transducer, a great wind anemometer, two Triton displays, a smart GPS/rate-compass puck, and a complete backbone NMEA-2K wiring package. It's about $1800 but is a super deal because if you bought it all separately it would be easily twice that. The Triton displays are excellent and are about the only decent things B&G sells IMHO. All the other stuff in the package, like thr DST-810 is manufactured by third parties.

I recently replaced an old DST800 with the new DST810, though I notice mine has the Gen2 Paddle wheel as standard. It is a wider wheel and does not spin as freely on the axle as the older type as in your video. It would be nice to se a review of the unit with the new Gen2 paddle wheel and the differences between them. I suspect they are fouled more quickly.

Thanks for the Information. Im very new to this idea. Ive relied on devices for Navigation for a few years. Mostly Garmin stuff. They leave a lot to be desired. Recently, my Gps tracking device and marine chart plotter bit the big one and Im relegated to using my Android. Not complaining but the screen is rather small and Im 70 so, I thought it would be nice if I used my laptop. As it always seems, that is a whole new world. Never heard of an Open CPN. So, here I am. I have a hewlett Packard laptop and plan to research this as best I can to be able to use my laptop for fishing In local waters. No long trips. Depth and location are paramount. The Mrs and I plan to do a lot of fishing for our favorite tablefare so location is everything. BTW, I was stationed in Virginia for many years. Great place to fish. Thanks so much.
