    Yay, more boat project videos!!! So glad you are jumping back in, but, all of this in 2 months (and video production)? All of these projects are on my virtual to-do list for any used boat purchase I might make, but I guess I have less confidence in my DIY-abilities (or lack thereof). If you are bringing the mast down, does that mean you are also going to take a good look at your chain plates and bulkheads? Also, with the removal of the generator, will you be taking another look at your alternators?

    Excellent video as always, being power self sufficient without diesel must be the number one goal of a yachite. Sustainability, all electric running excess during the day like water maker and ac :). I am doing the same on a yacht and tripling the solar to hopefully find surplus everyday and no diesel other than running an engine to move the boat. Have fun with the refit. Also like always, I am sure viewers are interested in all costs associated with the refit. Unless we talk to others we really have no idea. I guess refit budget for the projects outlined 60-90k? Good strategic option compared to buying new and doing it all again.....

    Sorry for the delay in reply... We've been super busy in the boat yard! Your goal for your boat and what we hope to achieve after our refit is exactly the same. It would be amazing to only need diesel to move the boat. We're keeping track of refit costs but as usual, things are already running ahead of what we'd estimated. There have been a few unexpected things that have popped up, but we'll still come out way ahead of buying new and starting all over!

    We have watched your adventures from the beginning. You guys were significant contributors to our motivation to adopt this lifestyle. Well, between that and the fact that we know some of the same folks down here in Galveston Bay. I am pleased to see that you have elected to upgrade Starry Horizons vs. going through the pain of selling and then finding a replacement. The solar upgrades are definitely a must. We have about 2100 watts currently and have another 500 to 600 to install once our hardtop helm cover is installed. I am curious to find out how the generator delete works out for you. Our Saona came with the Small Fischer Panda 15000i. It is a very thirsty little bugger. Given the size of our battery bank, and the solar, I have also been considering pulling the generator out as it would lighten the load on the starboard side, as well as make room for something useful like a dive compressor.

  • @OutChasingStars

    @OutChasingStars

    2 жыл бұрын

    The Galveston Bay sailing scene is definitely a small world! And we're quite happy (or we will be once we're done with projects) that we're keeping SH. She's taken such great care of us so far. We'll definitely be reporting back on how well things to without the generator. I'll admit to being a little bit nervous without it as it's always been a safety blanket of sorts. But if the weather is just too cloudy and we can't cut back on our electrical needs, we'll always have the engine alternators. Would definitely be curious if you remove the genset and still find a dive compressor to install. Most of them that I've seen are very power hungry and tough to run off of an inverter.

    We have the Zen 30. It can't seem to build enough pressure to make water anymore. We are sure it's not the membranes as we've changed those. No flow restrictions we could find. Judging from the comments on your video I am thinking we'll have to send it in for a rebuild. Using it for as long as we have (2 years daily on average), I think we've worn the rings down inside it. Congratulations on getting rid of the generator. Is oven and stove already electric? I wonder if you are going to upgrade the alternators on the engine as a backup? Since you will be running more power on the boat get an infrared thermometer. During the beginning/break-in phase do occasional heat checks on key components (like inverter etc) under heavy load for an hour or longer. You might find you want to add a large PC fan to keep components a little cooler to ensure longevity.

    We're not planning on doing a full shift into electric cooking at the moment. We've been happy with using propane and we'd rather use the extra power from solar in other areas. That being said, we are planning on getting a portable induction cooktop that we can use on days when we have excess solar generation. The alternators were upgraded once already back in Australia (120a Balmars) so we're going to leave them for this season and see how we get on. Based on the numbers I've run, I'm not anticipating needing to run them for backup too often.

    Great to see . Wonder how good a automatic diesel water heater and space heater would be? Like a Webastco. 1 litre of diesel has ~10kWh of energy (extremely good)) vs a Li battery ~0.7kWh/L. Heating 1 liter of water from 10c to 60c uses 60Wh, So 1 litre of diesel would heat ~175 liters of water (about 6-12 showers).

  • @OutChasingStars

    @OutChasingStars

    2 жыл бұрын

    A diesel water heat certainly is an interesting option and we know people who have gone that route. At this moment, with all the other changes we're making, simply moving our AC powered water heater to work off our inverter is the easiest fix. We're planning on another cruising season in the Bahamas to evaluate all the changes and our electrical consumption/generation. If things don't work out as we hope, we may have to have another re-think on the hot water!

    @@OutChasingStars My husband says it was the 100 series. All I remember is it being big, black, with blue feathers. The unit before was a Spectra and we had to rebuild that so often we went with the Schenker thinking it would be a more reliable brand. We heard it had more metal parts vs the plastic ones Spectra used. The thing we found out was actually going bad were the rubber rings. You can only push the rubber back and forth so many times in the piston housings before they wear down to a point where the system can no longer make pressure. We know how long it lasted because we have a maintenance log and we had an hour meter on the generator. Our evening routine always ran the generator and the watermaker so we could make hot water and do all the water related tasks at night. Chances are it lasted less than 980 hours as we wouldn't always turn on the watermaker with the generator as we often didn't use up all the water from the day before.

    Consider a second Victron inverter to allow split phase 230v that can power “judicious” use of your existing AC. Combined with a decent LFE battery bank and >2k solar, I think you’d be set.

  • @OutChasingStars

    @OutChasingStars

    2 жыл бұрын

    There are certainly ways to power our existing ACs and watermaker off inverters, but at the end of the day, it's still not as efficient as going to 12v units. And since our goal is to be able to run at least 1 air con whenever I want and have hot showers every day, efficiency will be key. I've run the numbers multiple times with varying assumptions (solar output/DC vs AC systems) so it'll be interesting to see how close it all comes to those models.

  • @JeffreyFay

    @JeffreyFay

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@OutChasingStars I know you’re getting rid of the genset but if you didn’t, a second inverter would double your charge rate too. I installed 2 3000w multiplus inverters which combined can dump 240a into the house battery. Combined with the Victron Cerbo GX which controls the genset to start and stop based on SOC I can minimize the running of the genny to save fuel. We have 2.2kw of solar going up at the next haul out so I’m anticipating the genset not running except to run the AC. Our water maker is 12v configured to run when the bank is fully charged, again, controlled by the Victron Cerbo. I eager to see your future videos and am sure to develop strategies / ideas from your experiences so keep them coming!

    Hi David and Amy. Would you mind telling me what brand/model solar panel you selected? Also, since y'all are very thorough in your decision-making, would you mind sharing your research on what additional output you are expecting from the underside of the bifacial panels? We've got a Leopard 42 on order, and based on the beam width, I also feel a five-wide solar arch will fit, but yet, I only ever see people installing four-wide panel arches, which I've never understood. Thoughts on why people don't use the full available beam width? I am envious of your decision to remove genset, install 12v Air-con and watermaker.. Leopard does not offer such options from the factory, and I'm somewhat afraid to venture so far from "legacy norm" on my own.... Same for induction cooktop and electric oven. Thank you very much. You guys are awesome inspirations!

  • @OutChasingStars

    @OutChasingStars

    2 жыл бұрын

    We are going with the Canadian Solar 450w bifacial. As for how much extra output we'll see from the underside, that is a big question mark. We're designing our system without counting on the extra bifacial output so it'll be a bonus. Going full beam on solar means it is a BIG install. That brings weight and windage concerns in addition to cost. And this may be a bit of a superficial reason, but I did really like how our existing semi-flexible panels kept the profile and look of the boat clean. Adding a big arch will change that.

    Sounds complicated. I use the KISS method- the hot tank on an AC breaker and turn it on on days when we will not be motoring and I know the Batts will be full from the 1950 watt solar array. Simple. Remember not to use the air fryer while the tank element is on🤩

    You can use a relay switch. Wire the Victron smart shunt 12v output to a relay at 90-95% SOC. The normally open contacts make the circuit from the inverter when energized. The NC contacts are powered from a non- inverted (shore power only) circuit. The only problem with this is the inverter takes over heating whenever the battery is full even on shore power. The solution is a second relay.

    I wanted to comment on your watermaker. From the brief glance I got on your Cruise RO installation there is a way to upgrade to a dc system without a complete replacement. All that is needed is a DC motor on the pump unit. I have this configuration. It does use a little more power than a Schenker(sp) design, roughly 10 amps or so at 12v more per 30 gallons of water. The problem with the Clark type pumps is all the rubber, etc seals in them. Expect a full rebuild every 1000 hours or so. Yes they use less power, but the rebuild cost when those 90ish rubber seals wear down is incredible. You should ask Sail Away about their rebuild. A bunch of my friends have all reported Clark pumps need to be rebuilt about every 1000 hours like clockwork. Sail Away's rebuild was something like $1200 or $1800 plus shipping as I recall on their Spectra. The pressure washer style pumps like you have onboard I've never run into anyone that has said they needed a new pump. If they did a new pump is usually only $300 dollars. The pressure washer pumps have hard pistons and rings like a car engine, not rubber that wears away. I personally can deal with the loss of a few extra amps that don't make it into my batteries, as they always get replaced by the solar anyway...and we have 300 watts. A new motor is also only about $200-$300 for a dc motor. So if you want to save 8k+ maybe you can send back the other watermaker if you still have an opportunity. The reliability just isn't there in my opinion for Clark style pumps, especially when far from home and the extreme complexity of the units. Sending them back for a rebuild can really be a downer.

    Hey Allyn! We did strongly consider both keeping our current AC powered CruiseRO and running it off the inverter as well as going with the CruiseRO DC powered HP pump. Rich at CruiseRO and I talked about it several times as he is also a Schenker dealer now. He told me that the 30gal/hour DC powered HP pump draws approx 90a (1,080w) while the 12v Schenker draws approx 33a (400w). So that is a pretty dramatic energy savings and energy efficiency is going to be a key component of setting up SH for the way we want to be able to use her now (run at least 1 air con whenever I want/hot showers every day/etc). Schenker say they've done some further upgrading of their energy efficient pump so hopefully it will be dependable for us!

    @@OutChasingStars Well I understand the lower current draw. Though my 1hp pump in clean water can produce 33 to 35 gallons per hour. More often it is 33. One hp 12 volt motors generally have a bench rating of 80 amps. With the boost pump it draws 82 amps according to my Catalina's energy monitor. This equates .402 gallons per amp. I can tell you that for smaller Clark pumps the efficiency is even less. A Spectra 7 gallon per hour unit generally runs at around 9 to 10 amps. The thing is the boost pumps need to be pretty hot and usually require about 5 to 8 amps. I went through the calculations with Eric from Sail Away. So conservatively lets just say 15 amps per hour for 7 gallons per hour. So one would need to run the unit between 4 and 5 hours to equal one hour on my pump. I think it would probably be 4.8 hours as a guess on average. So 4.8 hours x 15 amps is 72 amps of draw for pretty much the same amount of water. That is why I said that typically the difference is only about 10 amp hours. Most people would probably buy the cheapest pump they could which is a lower draw unit. The thing is you have to babysit those low draw units for hours instead of just getting the job done quickly. I guess your unit is 400 watts so that equates to 33.33 amps plus my guess is a 5 amp boost pump. So 38.33 per hour. Soo looking at Schenker units my guess is it is the 27 gallon per hour unit. To compare for instance my less efficient model to the new Schenker then just calculate the 33gph/the Schenker gph and then multiply the (Schenker and boost pump)AMPs . So in comparison I'll bet the factor is 1.22. So 1.22 x 38.33 so it is 46.7 amps to produce the same amount of water in such a use case. So for a similar amount of water your unit is better at producing water by 40 amps roughly. Though that would depend on the boost pump amperage which my guess is they didn't talk much about and may be higher for a Clark pump that can output higher GPH. If you are ging to have 3000 watts of solar the solar panels could theoretically output 250amps per hour which means you'd only need about 9.6 minutes of solar difference for a likely more reliable unit to get 33 gallons of water.

    Curious why you'd go with Schenker vs the CruiseRO 12v systems. While more efficient, it seems you are giving up some self-repairability and off the shelf parts compatibility? Im in a similar decision point and curious if there was anything else that pushed you in one direction vs the other.

    Rich and Charlie (the duo behind CruiseRO) are now Schenker dealers as well. They've been incredibly helpful to us from the start of our adventures so there's a lot of comfort in continuing to deal with them. The Schenker still uses 'off the shelf' Membranes, Prefilters/AC Filters and Shelf Boost Pump. The HP pump is 'proprietary' but so was the General Pump HP pump of the CruiseRO unit. There are compromises with all things on boats, but the increased efficiency and continuing to deal with Rich and Charlie outweighed all the cons for us.

    When there isn't much solar, will you be able to charge the lithiums with the alternator on your boat motor?

  • @OutChasingStars

    We will, yes. Our engines both have 120amp Balmar alternators. But with the size of our lithium bank + we can moderate our electrical usage on cloudy days (ie, don't run the dryer on cloudy days!) I'm not expecting we'll need to charge the batteries using the alternators all that often.

    I'm wondering why you feel that the 12v DC watermaker is a better choice over AC? I was visiting a watermaker manufacturer in S. FLA and when I asked about AC vs DC, they strongly advised I get AC provided I had a sufficient inverter. They sell both, so I couldn't see any bias.

  • @OutChasingStars

    @OutChasingStars

    I talked with a lot of people about this and it always seemed to come down to cost vs efficiency. Yes, you can run an AC watermaker off an inverter but the power draw will still be quite a bit more than equivalent DC unit. The obvious downside is the cost of the 12v unit. If the only system we were worried about was the watermaker, we'd probably go AC powered via inverter. But we also want to have the option of using at least 1 air con when we want, as well as powering our hot water heater via the inverter and some other systems as well. The difference in energy saving of a DC watermaker compared to AC will go a long way to powering some of those systems.

    I was wondering about this bi-facial solar panel. How much does it add to the power output? The 450W figure is impressive, but it's also proportional to the overall size, which you said was huge. Any data you can share to shine some insight into this? Cheers.

  • @OutChasingStars

    The literature says we could see 30% additional output from the bi-facial panel. So while it's rated at 450W, we may see 585W. Can't wait to test that out!

    3 hull boats (Trimarans) are certainly good platforms for liveaboard boats. They offer the pointing performance of a monohull but the stability of a cataraman. The downside is that are super wide but generally only offer the equivalent living space of a monohull.
