*****
After almost eight years living aboard our catamaran and sailing around the world, Starry Horizons is due for a refit. We've got big plans, including removing our generator, adding more solar, swapping watermakers, reworking our shore power connection, fiberglass repairs and pulling the mast off the boat.
But in order to prepare for all those projects, we have a lot of equipment that needs uninstalling first!

    We've certainly learned a LOT about our boat over the last 8 years. And the truth is, that while there are some very very talented people out there, no one cares about our boat as much as we do!

    Starry Horizons mechanical spaces look pristine. Cannot believe this is an 8 year old boat. Where did you have the generator, water maker, and converter originally installed? Did Uchimata do any of this work in La Rochelle (hard to believe)? [Yes trolls, of course I have watched ALL the videos from the beginning, I just do not remember, OK?] The corrosion around the water and exhaust pipes near the generator did not look too bad for 8+ years, but that is clearly a wake-up call for boat owners to stick their heads into all those inaccessible places and get eyeballs on all those fittings.

    The genset was an FP factory install. The water maker was done by Uchimata and the shore power converter was done by our dealer in Miami. I think you’re right that on the whole things weren’t too bad after 8 years but boats are just tough environments!

    Gday Dave & Amy from Perth 🇦🇺, we have absolutely binge watched Every one of your episodes since finding you guys after sifting through all of the KZread Sailing Channels. We love how you guys get back to the basics and explain the in and outs of all your adventures not only in detail but also reality where others just show the Fun, Exciting, Glourius parts. I'm a electrician and am also loving these latests on shore series atm. We wish you all the best with the Refit project and look massively forward to seeing you back on the water to share you ⛵ knowledge to help us prepare for our adventure in the coming years, including Cat ⛵ shopping in Greece 🇬🇷 in May 2023. All the best, keep in touch, keep up the Fantastic Videos Cheers Mick & Nikki 🇦🇺

    Thank you! I’ll admit I’m jealous of your electrician skills. That’ll be SUPER useful on a boat. 😁

    David, not only are you a hard worker, but you are extremely knowledgeable about the mechanics of the boat! I love the detailed information about the inner workings of the Starry Horizon. You guys are doing a great job explaining all of the systems and what is being done. Looking forward to the next installment of the refit story.

    Great videos, so glad you guys are back! I was curious as to why you did try to convert the RO watermaker to a DC high pressure pump instead of a complete replacement?

  • @OutChasingStars

    @OutChasingStars

    Rich and CruiseRO and I talked about that option. Going to the DC HP pump offered by CruiseRO offers only a slight energy savings compared to our previous setup. It certainly would have been the more cost effective/simple solution, but our goal is maximum energy efficiency and to achieve that goal, we needed to swap to a different watermaker.

    Not counting the extra cost .. Does carbon Fiber mast & boom make sense for a catamaran ?

  • @OutChasingStars

    It would depend on the type of catamaran. I would equate our boat to a Honda. Nothing extreme, very functional but built to a price point. We're 'heavy' and not super fast. A carbon fiber mast and boom wouldn't make much sense for us. But a Gunboat? That's a Ferrari kind of catamaran and they want all the speed/weight savings they can get. So it would make perfect sense for them.
