Today is the day that the refit gets real! The yard comes by with a crane to unstep the mast, remove our generator and also help remove our old shore power converter.
Watching all these things happen so quickly, it really sinks in... we're massively changing our boat! But it also means that we're getting closer to installing all the new, fun goodies!

    All the sound isolation in my generator case and outside along the walls is crumbling off. Yours looks pretty good still.

    Personally I do like a genset but a small one. I fitted a single cylinder yanmar engine driven genset which only weighs 95 kg so really not much and that gives me 120 amps through my Victron multiplus for charging on those rainy days and runs my aircon in the saloon and one hull. Even with 1000amphours of LiFePo4 batters @ 12v it’s needed. We have 1800w of solar but run a full electric galley. Getting gas out of the boat was my priority.

    Sounds like a nice setup! We're not going full electric galley at this point and with DC air con and watermaker, a generator would only exist to charge the batteries in those rare instances our solar can't keep up. And on those occasions we have 120a alternators to get us through. So hopefully we won't miss a genset too much but we'll see how this next season goes!

    Well, you are lightening up Starry Horizons! Jettisoning all of that heavy gear might gain you another half knot on the water! Good progress.

    I'll admit I'm excited about that prospect! We'll have to see how much weight we actually save when everything is all done.

    My back aches in sympathy. I had to take a Tramadol and some Meloxicam after just watching that. Other than what looked like a bit of rust on the back of the generator, the thing looked almost new. Did you clean it all up when you took the case off? With all that weight removed, you are going to have to repaint your boot stripes for the lower water line😄!

    I was pretty impressed with how it looked honestly. No extra cleaning necessary! And if we do end up with a lower water line, I'll consider any of those kinds of problems a good thing! 😆

    Wow!! You guys pulled a huge amount of mass out of the boat, how did you balance the yacht after this? There is a bit more mass on the back with the new solar array, and less mass up front now that the genset has been removed.

    Previously, SH had always been a bit bow heavy. Removing the genset and our shore power converter + adding the solar array has actually leveled her out pretty nicely!

    How much weight came out with the genset and power converter? Looked significant.

  • @OutChasingStars

    @OutChasingStars

    My guess is that the genset and power converter together weighed about 1,000lb/450kg. But the new solar ach and panels will be about 550lb/250kg. So we'll be adding quite a bit back.

    I can't find the actual specs, but I'm guessing the whole thing was about 300 lb (~135kg). Either way, there was no way I was getting it out myself!

    How many pounds of equipment did you get rid of and how much weight will the replacement equipment be?

  • @OutChasingStars

    @OutChasingStars

    Жыл бұрын

    I'm calculating that we'll remove about 1500lb (680kg) of weight off the boat. And the weight of the new equipment will be about 800lb (363kg). So there will be some weight savings.

    @@OutChasingStars I'd say that is substantial. On top of it you get new, updated equipment. Winner all the way around.

    Hi David, I am not sure this is the place or way but here goes: I have an Elba 45 on order and I'm contemplating between 50 or 60Hz. I am US based and the boat will be home for 1-2 years before full time cruising. Initially my build was US 60Hz, than I changed to 50Hz, and now I am not sure. I am planning on integrel 48V echo system with big lithium, big solar, inverters, and dual 50/60Hz grid. I will probably need a professional design, but from your experience, and since you are immersed in this topic, how would you build a new boat. 50 or 60 Hz for "international" power grid?

    Hi Hezi. That is perhaps the hardest question facing a boat that plans on sailing internationally. There are a lot of ways to tackle the challenge but here were our thoughts when we were building our Helia. 1) We're also US based and knew at some point we'd be bringing the boat back 'home'. So for long term/next potential buyers, 60hz made sense. 2) Air con was our big concern for frequency sensitive equipment. In general, running 60hz air cons at 50hz is better than the other way around. It turns out our CruisAir units had a sticker saying "Derated at 50hz" so we could have used them at that frequency if we didn't have our shore power converter. If you don't have too much frequency sensitive equipment on the boat (microwaves are another big one!) then you may be able to get away with an isolation transformer that converts the voltage to what you need. Just be aware that they are somewhat limited in capacity and you may have to do some power management when you're at the dock!
