    I play senior softball snd my biggest flaw is swinging too early and hitting the ball out in front of the plate. I usually hit the ball on the ground and straight at the shortstop. As much as I know this, I just can’t break the habit when I’m at the plate in a game. The ball just looks too fat and I’m too anxious. Do you have any tips for breaking this habit and hitting the ball with proper timing?

    What's unusual about you is how well-spoken you are. Most people doing how-to sports videos cant speak very well. They pause, search for the right words, backtrack, go off on tangents and are just hard to understand. Your speech is very fluid and organized.

    Are these tips based off the teachings of Ken and Brett van bogart of swing makeover? They use the connected position phrase

  • @DLeagueBP
    @DLeagueBP15 күн бұрын

    When I decided to improve my swing, I looked at a lot of different sources, including the swing makeover. A lot of the language is the same because it is common terminology used by a lot of people. Ken has lots of good advice and drills, but I don't agree with everything he teaches (we have different advice on bat path). So to answer the question: yes, in part. They are also based on teachings of ray demarini, Ryan Harvey, and many many others, and most importantly, my own journey

    For the cut swing, should we be standing at the front of the plate or rear. And are we looking for high pitches or chest/belt high

  • @DLeagueBP
    @DLeagueBP17 күн бұрын

    I can usually cut anything that is belt high or above. The swing looks more like a cut swing when the pitch is a bit lower, but you can hit a high pitch with a similar swing. Usually looks like a tomahawk swing. So watch the pitcher and stand wherever you need to get one above the belt (which is normally towards the front of the box)

    This bat has a few more gears in it, Now it has a stiffer barrel / Crisp feel but the ball jumps off the bat. Btw , what hat is that?

  • @DLeagueBP
    @DLeagueBP21 күн бұрын

    I believe it! It already feels good, but there is minimal webbing. And it was just getting hotter the more we swung it. Unfortunately, I ran out of time, and energy on an evening when the real feel was 100, to keep swinging hit. I think I'll keep hitting it just to see how hot it gets/long it lasts. And that's a FGBP hat!

  • @FatGuyBP
    @FatGuyBP21 күн бұрын

    One thing to keep in mind is that velo numbers are not as high with a cut swing . There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that either. A guy who squares it up might have better velo numbers but the ball won’t go as far as someone that spins the ball. I love the cut swing.

  • @DLeagueBP
    @DLeagueBP21 күн бұрын

    That's definitely good information. I hadn't considered the reduced exit velo numbers, but it makes perfect sense. It also makes me feel a bit better about my numbers. Haha. I also love the cut swing! And I love the consistency of your swing. I edited out a part where I told people to go to your channel and watch you just take consistent cuts over and over as an example of hitting well. Too many beginners want to hit tanks, and they should be hitting line drives in my opinion!

I feel I’m always way to out in front in live bp, need to learn to be more patient and wait for the ball to come down so not to have that upper cut swing. Will try starting hands higher also as I’ve been starting hands around under chest area. But I think timing and waiting is my biggest issue. Keep up the great work, it’s appreciated!

    How about balanced vs end-loaded bats and deciding on bat weight? Could you give advice on that?

  • @DLeagueBP
    @DLeagueBP23 күн бұрын

    When asked which bat to use, my answer is always the same: the one you feel most comfortable swinging. But if they are new and not homerun threats and want my input, I typically recommend they try a balanced bat. I also try to convince them to use a lighter bat. But, it's all about feel. Try as many different types of bats and loadings as possible!

  • @mykljp
    @mykljp20 күн бұрын

    I agree, swing different weights and endloads will help you find the one, or two for you and your swing. Ask teammates to try their bats. But don’t give up on a bat after a few swings and say “that bat sucks!”. Balance will help a batter with more control and consistency during their swing. Endloads help give the bat a little extra “pop” for distance. But I have seen many people swing a balanced bat and go yard with it!

    Should you stand in the back of the box or the front? Or does that depend on the ark thrown on the ball?

  • @DLeagueBP
    @DLeagueBP26 күн бұрын

    I'm going to talk about this in an upcoming video, but arc definitely plays a role. Most good hitters in low arc leagues (usssa) will stand in the front of the box. In other leagues, it can be a bit trickier. Watch the pitcher. If the pitch is regularly flat, move up in the box. If it is high arch, deep strikes, you may want to move back a little. But overall, in my experience, most guys on low level rec leagues stand too far back in the box. I'm always telling my teammates to move up

    These are really good tips. There is one thing I'd like to add.. where you start your hands does matter, you have to have spacing. Not as much as Ohtani but some spacing.. what naturally happens in your swing, if your mechanics are good, your hands naturally float back.. so if you start with your hands too close to your body, they can get caught behind your body. You'll start to swing around your body.. beat the ball in the ground, roll over, or just overall bad contact. Hope this helps!

  • @DLeagueBP
    @DLeagueBPАй бұрын

    I will disagree a little here. Where your hands are when your front foot lands matter. Where they are positioned while you are just standing in the box waiting on a pitch does not. This is softball, not baseball, and you have plenty of time to get your hands up and away from your body during your stride. However, with that said, keeping your hands away from your body at all times is probably best practice for most people. I sometimes have to remind myself to give my hands some space because, as you say, most people, myself included, naturally bring them straight back. However, there are a lot of really good hitters who simply create the needed space while they stride, and that's why I say that it really doesn't matter. Just be in the correct position when you hit the launch position

  • @dubt3779
    @dubt3779Ай бұрын

    @DLeagueBP I should have elaborated a little more.. my comment wasn't based on what you said about where your hands are when standing in the box.. I'm talking about where they are when you start your swing.. if you find yourself rolling over, beating the ball in the ground, or bad contact(end cappers), see where your hands are at the beginning of the swing.. bc, like you said, it's softball. People tend to overload and get their hands stuck behind their bodies bc they are trying to kill it..
