    One thing I've noticed in the few days I've been playing around with my demi palette is that the less colors you have, the more mixing space you need. This is not a linear correlation either. I tried working with a CMYK palette and a 2x4 mixing well, thinking that would be enough. It really isn't. Not for me at least. I should also note that I found this to be extra true when working with a water brush. Now this is all assuming you want to have a palette that you can mix just about any color with. If you like working more directly with your paints without mixing much, this won't be an issue. I'm trying to figure out what the best balance is for the mixing area I have but I think I'm gonna need a split primary + earth colors + viridian. Something like that.

    We love to hear about how you're exploring your palette! It's true that the Demi allows for limited mixing space, which is why filling it with 12 mini pans of paint and mixing in the lid is a favorite layout for many. Consider buying a Pack of 2 Small Mixing Pans for an additional well for mixing in your Demi Palette, or filling a Pocket Palette with four Large Mixing Pans and 4 Mini Pans for paint! Enjoy discovering what works best for you!

    Finding a good cyan and magenta can be hard. Cyan and magenta are essentially theoretical colors so pigments can only ever get close. A lot of pigments that do are not lightfast. One really good one though is Windsor and Newton manganese blue hue. It's very close to a true cyan and it's lightfast. I have Schmincke Horadam magenta and it's a good color but it is only rated 3/5 on their lightfastness scale (which they just call "lightfast" as opposed to 5/5 being "extremely lightfast"). There's probably more lightfast ones out there but I got the tube as a gift so y'know. Lastly, W&N Windsor lemon yellow and Cotman ivory black made my set complete. People really sleep on the Cotman series. Their lightfastness is the same as their artist quality series, it's just that the more expensive colors are not available and the pigment density is a little lower. I HIGHLY recommend them.

    Hmmm. PR122 is Opera Pink in my paints and Hansa Yelliw Deep is way deeper/orangey than your example. What Brand of paint are you using?

  • @donnacain4632
    @donnacain463222 күн бұрын

    The limited edition set contains paints by Letter Sparrow. I sent an email about this. I think the PR122 is in error. Quin Magenta is PR202. Pretty sure that's what should be in the Summer triad. I went by pigment numbers to avoid name confusion and the Opera Pink didn't work the same at all. I have Daniel Smith paints and created my own palette using those and an empty Art Toolkit Palette.

    Hi there! The demo was done using handmade paints from Letter Sparrow and we listed alternatives in the description. Anything with "opera" in the name is generally a fugitive (non-lightfast color) so I tend to shy away from them. They generally use a base pink pigment and add color enhancers/brighteners. Hope that helps!

    Love this! I ended up looking into colour theory for exactly the same reason - to find out how many ranges of greens I can mix. And yes, pigment numbers!!! My favourites on the paper I use are Holbein Cerulean Blue PB35 with a range of yellows for different moods of green (muting down if necessary with tiny amounts of PBl7), and Holbein Quin Red PV19 with Cerulean Blue for darker Blues (with tiny amounts of PBl7 if necessary. Such fun to discover

    I am having trouble understanding why you've classified ultramarine blue as warmer and cobalt teal blue as cooler. When you go around the color wheel in the way you did here, I see how placing ultramarine next to red puts it nearer the start of the warmest side of the color wheel (red). But ultramarine seems more cool-toned because it is more purple than cobalt teal, which is closer to green, which is closer to the warmer end of the color wheel overall. Visually, ultramarine just looks so much more cool toned than cobalt teal. Can anyone help explain this?

  • @timetotakeabreak
    @timetotakeabreak28 күн бұрын

    Your sentence about ultramarine being next to the warmest color red is your answer. Red is technically the warmest color on the whole wheel, so when looking at the color wheel at face value, the idea is that anything that is closest to red is considered warmer and anything further away from red is considered cooler. So ultramarine is closer to red while cobalt teal blue is almost on the opposite side of the wheel. I found this difficult to accept as well, and honestly the semantics aren’t all that important in terms of color mixing. As long as you know that mixing colors close to each other on the wheel will yield more vibrant mixes, and mixing colors farther apart will yield more muted mixes, that is all the info you need to know to have a functional split primary palette. If you do some digging online, there’s actually a ton of debate on warm and cool blue. From a color temperature perspective, which is what the color wheel is based on, red is the warmest color on the spectrum while violet is the coolest color on the spectrum. So one could successfully argue that ultramarine is actually cooler, as it is the closest to violet, and pthalo blue is actually warmer. I’ve seen professional artists flip flop the nomenclature all the time. I personally avoid labeling the temperatures of my blues altogether.

  • @MorganWitteTaylor
    @MorganWitteTaylor28 күн бұрын

    @@timetotakeabreak thank you for explaining this! Your second paragraph is exactly how my brain works. If you put the colors in a line like a color spectrum rather than a wheel, ultramarine is near the coolest color - purple - and therefore cooler. Visually, there’s just no way ultramarine is warmer than cobalt teal. I’m glad I’m not the only person who struggles with this concept!

I sort of avoid traditional sketchbooks because I enjoy using fountain pens with an extra fine nib and they feel uncomfortable on traditional watercolor papers.
