Exploring Gouache

We’ve been listening! So many of you have asked us about gouache that we decided to explore more for ourselves. We’re happy to offer Daniel Smith’s Primary Mixing Set and our favorite additional secondary and neutral colors. This video is an introduction to gouache and some tips for using it in our palettes.
Daniel Smith Extra Fine™ Gouache is a professional, artist-grade water media that produces an opaque matte finish and is uniquely formulated with higher pigment loads than watercolors to achieve density and opacity without adding whites or other fillers.
Gouache and watercolor go beautifully together, and we have enjoyed seeing artists explore both media together and separately. If you’ve never experimented with gouache, consider adding a few colors to your collection of paints!

Hi to Everybody... Jim from Madrid, Spain (a New Yorker living abroad). First of all, I just wanted to say that I trully think the Art Toolkit is one of the greatest palettes ever created and accessible to all, mainly for Outdoor painting in all of its forms, i.e. Urban, Plein Air, Nature, Animals, Botanical, Landscapes, or whatever and wherever you need to take your paints with you, due to its lightweight, size and, thereof, portability... AWESOME product! Specially for watercolors where very little paint (Specially when using Artist grade paint) goes a long way (very little paint for a lot of painting). Second... Gouache is a type of paint that, even though is extremely compatible with watercolors and you can definitely use it in a similar way as watercolors, it is better used in a similar way as Oil Painting (Acrylic Paint is a New type of medium invented in the 20th Century after Petrol was discovered and processed) to achieve its maximum potential. It is also a medium very well and massively used in the Art community by Illustrators during the 20th Century, before the IT technology allowed for Digital Illustrations. And, after painting with Gouache, you can also preserve it with varnish (on paper or canvas, for example) and the end result will look very similar to an oil painting too. But I am very curious to see how Gouache behaves in such a small palette because usually Gouache is better maintained when a bigger amount of paint is stored on a palette (for drying? Crackling, mold issues, etc.). Can you guys at Art Toolkit do the experiment of having Gouache stored in one of your palettes for a long period of time to see it's behaviour? There's a great Artist (Sarah Burns Studio - another US expat living in Scotland) that is an expert on Gouache, in case you might want to contact her, etc... because she not only does great Art but she experiments with the media in many ways too. I am just trying to help with some info for those who may not know a lot about Gouache (no harm intended). One last thing... I am saving up to get the Folio Palette with some extras, 'cause do to shipping and taxes costs the prices on this side if the pond ain't cheap. Again... love your line if products... I think they are awesome and thank you for your channel and all the info available. Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! We’re so glad you’re enjoying our palettes and our channel. We’re so happy to hear that the tips and tricks we share with our community are helpful! You bring up an excellent point regarding gouache’s lifespan; we plan to experiment further. We have seen Sarah’s work, and she is so talented! We hope to engage with more gouache artists in the near future now that we are offering gouache to our community. As for the pans and items you’re looking for, we have a distributor in Spain! You can find more of our supplies at Artemiranda :) I hope this helps! Thank you so much again for your comment and I hope you have a great day!

Looks like a great set! I’m not yet into gouache, but it is on my art supply wishlist. There is so much more I want to explore with watercolours before exploring gouache.

How does the waterbrush hold up using it with gouache? Do you do anything special at the end of a session? Thank you.

The waterbrush works great with the gouache! When we tried it, using the same aftercare as with watercolor worked for us: squeeze some water through the brush and dab off the color on a paper towel. :) I hope this helps!
