I have wanted this gouache palette for so long, but I keep talking myself out of it, because I have so much other gouache. I want the Daniel Smith gouache, too, but not with quite the same level of temptation. I think it's the tin. 😆

This is such a great idea! I have the Caran d'Ache gouache set too and now I'm thinking maybe I should take it away on our upcoming road trip because of how convenient it would be. I'm such a copy-cat! 😸 Is it bad that I now also want the Daniel Smith tubes so I can do this to my set as well? 🤣 Honestly, you absolutely nailed it! ❤

The hair on the second colouring page is so lovely! That tin can hold so much gouache, that’s perfect for a trip palette! I haven’t tried Caran D’Ache gouache, but I do really enjoy using Daniel Smith gouache in my dried palette. Hope you have a safe trip and enjoy your time visiting my country 😊, you’ll hopefully see lots of beautiful scenery to inspire your painting.

This is a great palette -and adding the white to the Caran d'Ache paints does really add something. These last forever too. I've had these for years and years...and they keep going. Great idea to add some extra colours and poured pans. I like the idea of including the travel brushes -they would fit well in the box if there are no tubes.

What a great idea! You've inspired me to do a similar upgrade to my Cd'A palette but all pans instead of tubes. I've got the DS and Holbein mixing sets, and if it fits I'll pour a thin layer into gansai pans, like gansai paint. I think they won't crumble and fall out if it's not poured too deep, and I mix in a couple drops of distilled water with watercolour medium to keep them from getting brittle. I'll probably use the Cd'A for base layer shapes, and then practice color mixing for all the details with the poured pans. I just love the way you created a self contained setup. Having all the tubes and palettes and stuff to deal with every time has discouraged me from really focusing on learning to work with all this gouache I've had for ages. Thanks so much, and have a wonderful journey!

I’m really glad I bought the Caran d’Ache pan gouache set. Just like you, I wasn’t sure if they were going to be too much of a kid’s product, but I don’t worry about that anymore. The pigmentation is great, I like the brush a lot, and the case is beautiful. I have had much more fun with the Caran D’Ache set than I expected. I use it alone, and with water color. I can fix watercolor mistakes without it looking like I smeared heavy gouache on thin WC, and if I overwork the WC, the gouache re-brightens or revives the color. The C’D pans are a very pleasant medium, designed to be very fun and easy to work with. If you’re looking for totally opaque, traditional gouache, the Caran d’Ache is different, because it’s less cakey and chalky, and easier to use. But it’s very high quality. It’s an excellent option for learning about gouache, a training wheels version that can also be a legitimate medium. I highly recommend it, and I’m on a tight budget, but the happiness it’s given me is worth the price. So if you’ve always wanted to try it out, I would encourage anyone to not be afraid to buy it!

"Should we use up the presumably inferior product first?" This is exactly my dilemma as I ponder what to pour in the porcelain studio palette I bought last year! It's kinda ironic, some DS watercolors crack horribly when you pan them, so it's funny that the gouache -- which usually cracks and doesn't rewet -- does so well from the brand!

I have the same set of fumuui brushes and I love them. I have the cat's tongue and it's become my favourite even when I'm home/in my studio. Great modifications, I love doing these kind of things myself too for taking palettes along 😍. Great results on the colouring book pictures - something I've never done but a great way pressure free way to test techniques/paints and set ups without having to think about what you're painting.

I was just trying a dot card of Daniel smith for the first time in two years of collecting their paints and I realized ultramarine burnt sienna and hansa yellow medium can get you olive green (from a mix of Jane’s gray and hansa medium), so you can mix Jane’s gray and olive, and l can also get chocolate browns and golds and greens, so burnt sienna is a very versatile color to add to the starter set. Jane’s gray and buff make Jane Blundell’s marble texture which is so nice. And a touch of buff to white makes a nice warm white! Buff is also a nice color to try in an opaque medium. The cascade green is a very pretty cool blue green option as well. I notice the gouache dot disperses the same way as the watercolor does.

You might also consider glue dots or magnets (crazy glue helps the latter stick better to the bottom of pans that the sticky backs of magnets). Your two sided tape is also a good choice. Also have you considered seeing if whole or half pans would work (depending on the size you want) for the extra paint ? They are easily available on line. Nice job! Hope it works for you.

Love how the palette turned out, and how clever of you to velcro the brushes to the lid!!!! And, I love how both the coloring pages turned out. Gouache, in theory, ought to work well on whatever paper that's thick enough to take paint. I was about to comment that you might want to spray the pans and let them sit and even get goopy, a la Sarah Burns' advice, but then you explained. So interesting that the DS doesn't layer well. But that Cascade Green.... so tempting!

Wow, this is very interesting! I’ve looked at that Caran d’Ache set but I don’t think would ever have occurred to me to remove the pans from the molded plastic insert to make more room. Would the brushes also fit if the bristle ends were over the tubes of gouache rather than over the pans? I’m just wondering if they will be in contact with potentially wet pans and get dirty. Also, just a tip for anyone wanting to attach pans to tins… I highly recommend Aleene’s Instant Tacky, which is a sort of rubbery glue dot. They are easily to apply and already pre-shaped/cut (3/8” in diameter, I think) and provide a strong hold, but come off easily if you want to remove them, and they also have some thickness/squishiness so they work well even if you’re not dealing with perfectly flat surfaces. They work well with most pans, but as it happens with the Caran d’Ache ones shown here, it looks like there is a recessed circular area which might be deeper than the glue dot is thick, rendering them ineffective if used in the middle of the pan.

Arteza gouache is easier because it is full of filler. Chalk or whatever they use. Daniel smith is 100%pigment and binder, gum Arabic. I have no trouble using the Daniel Smith gouache, but that being said I do prefer Holbein, and M. Graham.

Hey I just discovered that Qor posted lightfast testing for each color last year on their website. Made me think of you. They tested numerous dilutions as well as tints with white. They found some issues with the Titan Buff darkening, also the phthalo green and permanent green light. The earth tones look great though. Still makes me wonder what happened to yours!

Very pretty! I have that same cute little travel palette and I am so frustrated with it. Either I am very heavy handed, or the magnet isn't up to the task of keeping it held on to the palette. I tried mine for the first time today and knocked it off the magnet twice. How have you found it to be? If you haven't used it yet, you might want to make sure to give it a try before you hit the road. It is sooo cute and I was so excited to use it. I am not sure of what to do about the magnet issue. It's fine to sit on a table but that's not the point of this type of palette, right?

I prefer to use fabric elastic instead of the regular rubber bands. I find they are more durable and nicer feel to them as well. Also have 2 kinds elastic sort of skipping ropes that I had bought to make my own cat teasers but they make for great elastics as well if you don’t mind the knot This tin set up is such a nice set-up. I’m going to try altering my Pretty Excellent tins (I have the 36 set and the 48 set but only paint in the soft plastic liner, non have the individualpans so I need to find the right size of those pans first (regular half pans are just a bit too tight 😫 or maybe someone can recommend me where to get them

I don’t know how this happens but I’ll have a beverage in my hand and plan to go outdoors and finally put my feet up but I launch YT and there’s a video from you! 😂😂😂 It makes ME so happy 🥰 BTW I am not planning any purchases this year and will keep your No-buy in mind. We should all be mindful of the supplies we have available to us and which ones we don’t use, and pass them on to someone who is interested. I’m not a professional artist so however long it takes for things to be finished that will be how long it takes. You have reviewed and purchased so many art materials, what if you let three be picked out of a hat and that’s the three you work with! We’re all relatively talented and can come up with something. Plus they’d still be “new” to you so it could be an adventure. Hmm 🫢
