Adventures in lawn growing, lawn mowers, and other gardening activities. Join me on my learning adventure as I muddle along, waffle far too much, and hopefully pass along the occasional useful tip. I'm your typical middle-aged male with a lawn growing obsession, very little mechanical experience but a strong inclination to rebuild Scott Bonnar lawn mowers, and a number of garden maintenance tasks to tend to (grape vines, olives trees, and other home garden fun).

lol “few swear words”. Can relate. Thanks for the video much appreciated.
Reliving an old thread, the nut on the end of the sprocket keeps coming loose- whats the cause?
Different level. Can I ask how much a frame is worth? Understand if you don't discuss that on here
It'll depend whether you're after a twin rail or solid deck. Check out his online store: moteck.com.au/shop/products/scott-bonnar/frame-components/
@@LoveLarn Thank you
I think the price is fair for something of that quality in 2024..That's how things need to be made.
💯 Shane speaks with me regularly about the history of the steel and manufacturing industries in Australia and how they were effectively shut down over time. I don't know what's fact and what's opinion but I do know I value innovative product designs and improvements, built to a high standard. That's what Shane does! Pay him a visit if you're in WA, you won't regret it!
@@LoveLarn very very interesting. I just love so much passion and quality work that missing today.
Thank you for these videos. Just did my drive cork now. I'm learning so much doing this mower with excellent videos like this. I don't think I could handle reading a book.
So glad you're finding them useful, thanks for watching!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Definitely leave that job to the experts.
Thank you for these videos they really are very helpful
I put my cork on last night for the first time. I used a vice to help me with clapping as I didn't have them clamps
Nice machine!
So nice
Hi That Mower 20 inch has now got Over 50 mor years of Mowing , Love It
Shane needs to change his name to FIGJAM.
Beautiful
Beautiful work mate Love mine
My clutch is stuck on at the motor
Some of them can be tight. Make sure it's not been welded onto the shaft as a starting point. Lots of penetrating oil/CRC in every nook and cranny. Take the clutch body apart if you haven't already and give it a bang towards the engine body. A bit of effort will usually get it off the shaft but if not you can lever between engine and clutch with a small bar or whatever you have... just go easy and avoid damaging engine/shaft/clutch. Add oil, repeat 👍
@@LoveLarn I got it this morning with wd40 and tapped the nut
That's art. I can't imagine getting it dirty
That's how you do it
Fantastic video mate
Been looking at your videos to assist with the replacement of my clutch and pto shaft. I noticed you had a clunk noise when engaging the clutch at full revs. I’m getting this clunk noise when I engage the reel at idle. Is there a way to stop this noise?
Have you tried easing the clutch lever into the engaged position? How much play do you have between clutch cone and PTO shaft? Might be worth pulling the clutch down to check the woodruff key and any other wear
My Uncle did this many times until. The blade came out the lathe spinning at high speed straight up to his neck nearly killing him, he was in hospital for 8 months still cannot talk now. So be very careful.
I believe you.
Shane I love your work, you just can't beat Australian made products 👌 I'm a boilermaker pressure welder WTIA certified tig welder and everything you talk about is spot on.
I wouldn’t mind a SB45 but the price is way too high and I’ve only got 200m2 lawn so i had to buy a 20” Masport olympic brand new 2 grand sort of thing but its hassle free and the grass doesn’t know any different……..!!
Hey mate :) quick tip with the cork, apply adhesive to both sides, then hold the housing vertical on a desk, put one end of the cork into place from the inside and look through from the other side to see what’s going on, then gently work your way around gradually pressing it into place always looking from one side while placing it down from the other. Hard to explain, but that’s how I found it easiest :)
Is there a web page to see if he makes /sells reels for mclane 20” 25” ?
Moteck.com.au but he's only doing Scott Bonnar reels
Crap music
😝
Hello, I'm about to embark on rebuilding my 14 inch. With the brass bushings within the ratchet boxes. Do you suggest replacing them with new ones as they're difficult to get to. I'm worried about breaking the ratchet boxes when removing the bushings. Appreciate the help and thank you for the series.
It's worth considering while the machine is torn down but not always necessary as the rear rollers don't rotate at high speed. If you've got the cash to spare and the means to press out the old and press in the new--and then ream, go for it. Might also be worth considering if you're also replacing the rear roller shaft. If none of the above applies, you'll likely be fine to leave :)
how many RPM is the reel spinning in the lathe?
Am all the way here in Africa & am obsessed with Scott Bonnar 45. Thats a beautiful collection.
Awesome. It is a tribute to your skill Shane. Nice to see some well made Australian parts. I just need to pick the right numbers in the Lotto now.
This is cool
Would love to see his touch on a diplomat resto
Thanks for creating this tutorial. I have shown before, but gave mine a go today and happy with the result. The only question that I have is the tightening of the nut below the adjustment screw, no matter how many times I turned it, it never tightened. Is this critical? Do I need a new “bolt”? I did tighten the outer nut that locks the adjustment in place. It cut very well.
Glad you found it helpful and got a good result! I wonder if the thread on the lower nut is stripped? Or, like you say, possibly the bolt thread itself. It's definitely not critical but will help hold your adjustment... definitely not OEM and an addition recommended by others. Perhaps something to look at the next time you pull the reel out or need to adjust.
Good idea
This is a Cox/Rolux mower? Looks great!
It's a Scott Bonnar (similar to the Cox but from an earlier time!)
I would love to start my own business in country Victoria as we don't have a sharpening service for atleast a dozen golf clubs, how much to get started and what is needed 🙏🙏
SHANE, what’s the Price on the RED FLUORO SCOTT BONAR 45 mower you showed MIKE & the Viewers on U-tube? Thx BRIAN (Rockingham).
Hey Brian, Shane reckons that one was around $6k but would a bit more now
Caution about powder coat. Rust creeps under it as there is no primer. Hard to touch up too.
That's for the vid mate Can you put the new aftermarket brass thrust pads on either way? Or do they just go on 1 way? Like the one you showed in the video at 2 mins has 2 different faces
Hey mate, the thrust pads typically have an oil hole so make sure that faces up. The grooves on the one face also mate with the clutch fork, with the flat face of the thrust pad sitting against the clutch cone (brass thrust pads are also typically used with a fibre washer between pad and cone)
Just repaired a broken twin rail deck. That repair looks neat as it’s out of sight. Unfortunately the strength is in the vertical not the horizontal plane. Better to run length of steel front and back in the vertical. Horizontal plane becomes insignificant, which it is anyway. Did mine on the outside. Not as pretty, but very strong
Shane shares his views on reinforcing vs replacing in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mXuNyMdvYLyzYNI.html You might find it interesting
wow.. all I want is a 45 17inch.. thats all nothing restored even a non runner would be good..
Hit him up. Not sure what's left but I do know Shane will ship interstate
$49.95 😂 but you didn’t sell any. Also, those little bitty weed sprouts you pulled 😂
1 million+ sold! Try it on bigger weeds, it works, I just don't let my weeds get too big 😝👍
what is that paint? no?
It's called Aztec Silver (it's powder coat)
Counter weight on the engine right!?!
You know it! 👍😍
Great video Michael and Excellent work Shane!
Absolute beauty Shane.. Thanks for the video Michael
My yard has been taken over by weeds. Finally decided I will set some time aside early morning and evening to pull weeds as my exercise time. I think after rain should be an easy time for it, also.
Love the video I would like to know more about his setup
Hasn’t Shane just copied the original SB rollers and ‘tweaked’ the design? The form, fit and function are the same as the original SB rollers. If people want to pay extra for a Moteck roller they will, if people want to buy an alternative cheaper product they will. It doesn’t even need a bearing, it probably rotates at less than 100 RPM. The original designers of the mower realised that and realised that for the function of the mower it wasn’t necessary and adding a bearing just added extra time and cost to the mower.
At the end of the day a front roller is a front roller, you're right. Have a look at the wear on a well-used, original front roller shaft. The resultant slop can lead to an uneven cut. Adding the bearings most certainly adds cost to this component
was that $200 for everything to be powder coated?
Yep--including bars and catcher. Was a few year back though
@@LoveLarn cheers mate
Australian manufacturing at its best! Buy local and keep it in Australia!
If Shane is spinning the reel, in the direction it cuts in the mower & basically setting the tool in the position of the bedknife & is creating a sharp quality cutting edge then why do we get told to reverse the direction for a backlap ?
I'll ask him! I suspect it's a safety measure but I'm not sure... rather than grinding (or cutting) the reel metal against a stone (or tool), backlapping grinds the reel against the bedknife using an abrasive paste to do the grinding so it could be instead to avoid catching the reel edge against the leading edge of the bedknife
