They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but it's also theft when we're talking about intellectual property.
Shane Kosteszyn from Moteck Machining and Cylinder Mowers joins us once again in this video to speak out about the eBay seller who's selling duplicates of his designs.
If you've watched some of the previous videos we've made with Shane, you'll know there's no overlooking the time, money and effort that goes into the development of every one of his products.
Shane's efforts help to keep our Scott Bonnar dreams alive, whether those dreams be of new frames, the best reels available, or other parts. Although these products are naturally constrained to some extent by the design of the originals, Shane--like other manufacturers--has made a concerted effort to enhance those designs through improvements in function and/or materials.
Unfortunately, it's too easy to replicate the final product using tools like 3D scanners and CNC machines and some companies have taken the opportunity to replicate Shane's products. These clones are being sold at a reduced price and ignore the costs Shane bears to bring these products to market. Given the costs of machinery and materials, Shane's investment in the Scott Bonnar space is not insignificant.
It may also be unclear to consumers whether these are original MMCM products. But if the price is too good to be true… maybe it is.
There is always room for new players in the market but their business model will not succeed if it's based on duplicating the work of others.
As consumers, we have the power to make the choice. For some of us, budget is the priority and will dominate our builds.
However, to continue supporting guys like Shane who continue to bring innovative changes to a 50 year-old cylinder mower design, it may be best to ignore those who undermine and undervalue the products being delivered by those with a genuine respect for our passions.
If in doubt, buy direct from moteck.com.au or phone Shane up for a chat. You won't regret it.

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical training. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!

I enjoy these collaboration videos. It’s wonderful to see what goes into these products.

Hasn’t Shane just copied the original SB rollers and ‘tweaked’ the design? The form, fit and function are the same as the original SB rollers. If people want to pay extra for a Moteck roller they will, if people want to buy an alternative cheaper product they will. It doesn’t even need a bearing, it probably rotates at less than 100 RPM. The original designers of the mower realised that and realised that for the function of the mower it wasn’t necessary and adding a bearing just added extra time and cost to the mower.

At the end of the day a front roller is a front roller, you're right. Have a look at the wear on a well-used, original front roller shaft. The resultant slop can lead to an uneven cut. Adding the bearings most certainly adds cost to this component
