Are there pitfalls to reinforcing old rails? In the experience of Shane Kosteszyn from Moteck Machining and Cylinder Mowers, welding new steel to old is a band aid solution that doesn't make sense and won't last the distance.
Angle iron from Bunnings and reinforcing kits are one and same, to Shane's thinking, and neither solution addresses the condition of the side plates--including wear to the reel adjuster slots, the bushings and catcher pins.
Replacement rail kits bring a different set of problems in terms of re-welding the side plates.
The MMCM twin rail frames and kits Shane manufactures and sells include 3mm steel, keyed rails, and new front roller bushes, reel adjuster bolts, and catcher pins. These frames employ new steel throughout, adjustable PTO slots and slightly larger side plates for a better fitting side cover. Sides and decks for solids are also available in Shane's store.
Shane claims the higher tolerances, thicker material and adjustability make for a smoother-running machine.

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical training. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!

This could be the best Shane / Michael video to date. Folks Shane is actually cutting a mortise and tenon joint, therefore removing all the stress from the weld. Genius!

The reason some don't like to use new is the classic Ship Of Theseus problem.

Fair enough, each to their own! Personally, I'm a "is the ship the material it's made from" sort of philosopher 😍 Btw I didn't know there was a name for this--thanks for sharing!

@@LoveLarn , after thinking of your reply for the last month ( yes I need more socialising) I think you are correct Michael . The mower is its original drawing. Shane is still referring back to the original blueprint made by the engineer/ designer. Ie the 1968 metal is totally different to the 1978 metal .

Different level. Can I ask how much a frame is worth? Understand if you don't discuss that on here

It'll depend whether you're after a twin rail or solid deck. Check out his online store: moteck.com.au/shop/products/scott-bonnar/frame-components/

💯 Shane speaks with me regularly about the history of the steel and manufacturing industries in Australia and how they were effectively shut down over time. I don't know what's fact and what's opinion but I do know I value innovative product designs and improvements, built to a high standard. That's what Shane does! Pay him a visit if you're in WA, you won't regret it!
