Removing a seized bolt is easy when you can weld ;)
Backing out the bolts securing your bottom blade to the soleplate of your Scott Bonnar lawn mower can seem like one of the harder tasks of any teardown. Given their position on the machine and proximity to the ground (and therefore grass juice and water), these bolts are often corroded.
The slotted heads of these fasteners are also easy to damage!
If you're lucky, they'll all just turn out. More likely, one or more will not want to play nicely.
As a first step, make sure you're using a driver that mates well with the slot. Make your own if you have to. Use a liberal amount of penetrating oil like WD-40 or CRC and let it sit overnight.
Next, try an impact driver--either a powered driver or a manual-style impact driver you hit with a mallet or hammer.
Your next avenue is heat. By heating the metal of the soleplate and bolt, it will expand and break the rust bond between bolt and soleplate. Heat is brilliant if you've got the means.
When all else fails, the approach Shane demonstrates in the video is the way to go.
Shane first cleans up the surface of the screw heads to remove any corrosion and other dirt. A large nut is then welded to each screw head. A spanner sized to fit the nut is finally used to undo the nut and bolt together.
Note the mechanical interface between bolt and spanner helps but it's mainly the heat at work which helps everything along.
⚠️ Your safety is your responsibility. Don't forget to disconnect your spark plug before starting work on your machine and always read and follow the instructions/labels on your equipment, tools and chemicals. ⚠️

About me and this channel: I'm Michael, a homeowner and aspiring lawn addict. I make these videos to share as much as I can, as best I can, from my recent experience rebuilding two Scott Bonnar 45 mowers. Although I'm a passionate wood worker and ex-IT guy, I have zero mechanical training. I'm no expert on these subjects but I learn by sharing and it encourages me to grow a better lawn and build a better mower if I know you're watching!

That makes it look easy. Mine gave me grief when I did it. Luckily an impact driver was enough as I don't have a welder.

‘…cause four outta five ain’t bad…’ 100% best way to get those pesky screws out, saves a hell of a lot of blood, sweat, tears and swear words haha.

Sorry mate--I asked Shane and he says not at this time due to high steel prices. He's going to keep thinking about it though :)
