Woodturning: Wind-blown Sycamore

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

No, it wasn't blown down by the wind - but the picture I paint on the vase is of a tree with its leaves blowing off in the autumn wind. This tall vase is made from a piece of fresh sycamore (down only about four months), around eight inches in diameter (20.3 cm) and about 16 inches (40.6cm) in length. The finished vase is a maximum of four inches in diameter (100mm) and 12 inches tall (30.5cm). It is hollowed using a 5/8" (16mm) ring tool.

I've been using for a month or two now, and in that whole time, I've only gotten one catch, and that was when I deliberately caused it to show what happens when holding the ring in the wrong position. It wasn't a bad catch - I've had worse using a scraper before (much to my shame!). I think it's a great tool, especially for hollowing. I'll be using it in my next video, to turn a bowl or perhaps a platter, to hollow the inside of the piece instead of using a bowl gouge. I think the ring tool will perform admirably there too, but we'll see. Thanks for watching, Ray.

Is there anything you can't do Rick! Nice job. By the way. I bought the Delta. Put it together. Runs true and fine. I think the reeves drives growl a little, but I hear that from others who use this type of drive. I think the low speed is 350 or 400 I do not have a way to tell. This is much better than some of the brand new cheaper models that won't go below 600. Thanks for you advice.

Really quite beautiful. I have a Sycamore tree that my son planted when he was 15. I keep thinking if a brand falls off I will dry it and try my hand at turning it on my husband lathe for my son. I might be able to get a dowel out of it. Lol is it hard to turn??

It's not hard to turn, unless you're careless like me! Sycamore is a beautiful wood - I was lucky enough to get a half dozen sycamore logs recently. I've still got a few to work on. Thanks for watching, Teddie.

Thank you, Rick. I see the heartwood is solid all the way through. No pith? Is pith only in some trees?

Aha. I asked before the end of the video. You mention pith right at the end.

As far as I know, all tree species have a pith. Certainly every piece of wood I’ve turned has had a pith, which usually has to be excluded from the turning. This one definitely had a pith in it. Most of it got removed when I hollowed out the vase. But the bottom still contains the pith. However, I made the bottom fairly thin and then soaked it in thin CA glue, inside and out. So far, that seems to have worked - no splitting.

A trick to make the vase waterproof. After all the sanding is done, fill the inside with polyurethane and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Pour the poly out, hang the vase upside down and allow poly to fully dry (I allow 24 hours). Look at the vase and see if any poly leaked out to the outside. these are cracks that the poly leaked out of and need to be glued. Scuff up the inside of vase with 220 and repeat process of filling vase with poly waiting 20 minutes and dumping out and hang upside down to dry. Scuff one more time and repeat (a total of 3 times) Take vase in house and allow to sit a few days to acclimate to the temperature and humidity, fold up some paper towels and put them in a bowl. Fill the vase with water and set vase in the bowl and watch it closely for the first few hours for leaks. Fix any leaks with CA glue, test again with water and you can let it set for however long you feel satisfied that it's not gonna leak. Then you can proceed to finish the vase as intended.

That's a good idea, Curty. I'd never really considered how to make the vase functional like that. Thanks for the suggestion!

See my earlier video on the ring tool (kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZqjrqaJmcWdadI.html), at about 18 minutes in. Oneway sells a cone shaped stone for sharpening. It is used in a router or some type of high rpm rotary tool, like a Dremel. It’s quite easy and quick to sharpen.

If you placed a camera like this one www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C9C6P5D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 on the end of your termite gouge, you would be able to see what's going on inside the vase.

Yes, I tried three different inspection cameras like that. I wasn’t pleased with their performance. Each claimed to take full HD, but none actually did. I have my eye on one that apparently really does full HD, but I haven’t decided yet to spend the big bucks on it (well, it’s about $90). I would be able to get really get close-ups of the cutting action, plus I’d be able to shoot way down inside a vase or hollow form, and that would be cool. Thanks for the suggestion, Manny.
