    Back in the day, it was pretty common that Craftsman screwdrivers would be used as chisels or prybars for removing nails or car mufflers, and when they 'wore out' take them back to Sears for replacement with no questions asked. Sears is gone, and Craftsman tools are now sold at Ace Hardware and Lowes - do they still do the walk-in replacement thing?

    @@monophoto1 I once took back a 3/4 drive breaker bar and an 1 and 7/8 inch socket. First I broke the socket. They replaced. Then I broke the breaker bar and they gave me another one. Then I broke another bar so I made a bar out of solid steel and a junk ratchet. With that rig I broke the replaced socket. Back to Sears and the manager says “ I’m going to give you new ones but what are you doing to break them. I said just trying to break a nut loose on a Verson Press at work (GM). I was a millwright/welder. He said no way you’re breaking that like that. I said yes but the ten foot pipe I’m putting on the breaker bar just bent a little. He laughed and gave me the black impact socket and a heavy duty black breaker bar. He said if you break that I want pictures. So I had the guys take pictures of me finally getting the nut loose after four days of trying and soaking it with penetrating oil Kroil. He blew the picture up to 10x15 and used it as a display in the tool section.

    Hi Rick. I’m sorry but I have to agree with one of the comments that mentions the claw hammer flexing the tool rest. However, the weld does appear to be a little on the light side. I have made several of my own tool rests and never had one break. I would not toss it out. For a few bucks you can get it welded back together and if done correctly it should be very strong. On the longer rests that I welded I also welded gussets to make it stronger. At that length there is a lot of stress put on a single weld. Glad you were not injured and thanks for the video. Take care and stay safe.

    I took a closer look at the video at the point where the tool rest broke. I'm pretty sure that the leverage point of the hammer was on the wood and not the tool rest. That's what I remember, although I wasn't consciously making an effort to avoid touching the rest. I'm not going to get it repaired. I've still got the really heavy one from Powermatic that came with my lathe. Thanks for watching and commenting, Dan.

    Hi Rick. That Powermatic tool rest looks very substantial. I can’t imagine it ever breaking. The Nova system is a good concept but after looking at your video again it appears not as well made as it should be. You are right not to get it repaired. The amount of work required to repair it properly would cost more than a new Robust tool rest. Take care Rick. Rick -- I think the spalting could make that wood stunning. If you were closer, I'd offer to stabilize the wood for you. You could cut it up into smaller blanks, suitable for stabilizing. Or, you could shape and hollow the blank into rough form, and then have it stabilzed. (It's hard to get the resin to penetrate much more than an inch.) Again, it's very interesting figure and could make a spectacular piece (or a number of smaller pieces -- duck calls, Christmas ornaments, kitchen utensil handles, etc.

How much force does a 20 inch roughing gouge apply to a 16 inch log ? I will not buy a Teknatool tool rest after this even if they replace it. And that's a shame 'cause I'm looking for a bigger one for my midi, and the Nova box rests were tempting me too. Up to now. Glad you stay unscathed Rick ! Stay safe. -Mike😷💉

    Well, Rick, sometimes you're the windshield and sometimes you're the bug. Today you were the bug just not at 60 mph. I'm glad you didn't get hurt. Did you contact Teknatool to get their response? I don't have a lathe so it won't affect me but people need to know about this. Stay safe and healthy. Bill

    No, I haven't contacted Teknatool. The tool rest was five years old (still shouldn't have broken), and well out of any warranty, so I decided it wasn't worth the effort to let them know.

    It's a shame about the toolrest. The current model from Nova has a reinforced base with much better welding however. I checked mine after seeing this. It is about a tear old.

    It wasn’t that lovely. If it had been, I wouldn’t have jettisoned it so easily. It had a lot of white rot in it, and I didn’t think it was worth an more time, since I have a lot of other logs in good shape that I can work on. Thanks for watching, Phil.

    I'd guess that a review starting at minute 3:16 will show you the cause of the tool rest failure. You can actually see the tool rest flex from the force being applied by the hammer.

  • @lad60606

    A one arm pull on a hammer should not be sufficient to break a tool rest.

  • @RickTurnsWoodturning

    @RickTurnsWoodturning

    3 жыл бұрын

    I'm pretty sure that most of the hammer leverage was against the log right below the nail. I took a look at the video again at that time point, but didn't notice any movement of the tool rest. In any event, whatever pressure might have been exerted by that hammer shouldn't have been able to damage the tool rest. Thanks for watching and commenting, Robin.

    @@RickTurnsWoodturning I wonder how much to send to me. I’d weld it 36 years of welding. I’m in Michigan. Probably like everything else it cost 75% of what it cost to get it to ship it back. Of course that makes no sense.
