I'm going to say that the PS5 Pro will still be a Gen 4 SSD console more than likely. When Sony makes a hardware platform they usually lock all that stuff in for the generation. For example: the DualShock 4 from launch up to now is still using Micro USB even though DualSenses are all using USB type-C. I don't think we're going to see Gen 5 *requirements* until the PS6

I dont think gen5 pcie will be enough refined to be "double the speed" by the time the ps5 pro would otherwise be out, to add to your theory.

It would be pointless to go with Gen 5 given that no one on a game console is likely to be doing anything that benefits from what Gen 5 M.2 drives can deliver. Heck, most people using gaming PCs can't tell the difference between Gen 3 and Gen 5, much less 4 and 5.

Are you sure the system wasn’t just busy and you were powering it off? When you switch off a busy system it will need to sometimes enter repair mode when you turn it back on (which would be your second press of the power button). How long did you leave it in the black screen state?

Thank you for this. I was going to wait for a Gen5 SSD to use in the PS5, so it's quite shocking to see these results. Also, I suspect the PS5 Pro will probably still use Gen4, but I'd be happy to be wrong about that one.

I'm sure a power cable for fan to usb connector for Gen5 SSD's will happen soon enough for PS5. I think PS5 Pro would just keep using Gen4, but I think a Gen5 for those who don't have an SSD yet is a good idea.

sequential reads and writes are about double that of gen4 on gen5, but the randoms reads and writes are only a few percent faster from gen4 to gen5, also they have made plenty of motherboards for pcs that can utilize a gen5 drive, and what they've found is that the only thing the gen5 ssd does even on its own platform at the moment markedly better than gen4 did it was the sequential reads and writes, and using this drive to move large files around is about the best performance you're gonna get out of it, while the performance on in-game loading screen times where I would imagine people to expect gen5 to be considerably faster is sadly negligible on pc, which I suspect may actually have something to do with why gen5 isnt in the regular model ps5 to begin with.

I think extra bandwith on "next" gen consoles wont have such an impact except they'll utilize decompression hardware which makes fast game loading and switching possible

The point is there won’t need to be any compression because the storage and ram (unified or not) will be so fast.

Jealous, he has PT on his PS5. TBH, not surprised these failed considering how locked down is the PS5 OS. Sony probably COULD make them work, but considering how few non-pro consumers would bother with Gen 5's price over Gen 4, and the support nightmare of the cooling, don't suspect it will EVER happen. Besides, paying extra for something like this "today" in the HOPES of some future support (i.e. "future proofing") usually turns out poorly for the buyer.

The mistake you made is thinking that the PS5 would treat the M.2 SSD as in a regular pc, it does not. The PS5 simply does not know how to handle Gen 5 SSD's and the fact 1x of your sample Gen 5 worked and 1x did not, is more to the onboard controller of said M.2 SSD than the PS5. The "bios", CPU and chipsets of the PS5 is way more limited than a regular modern-day PC. BTW, it is recommended to pull the powercord when removing/installing a M.2 SSD... (when the system has a soft-on/off and not a physical on/off switch)

I would say the Seagate 530 with heatsink and the Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink (as long as it has the latest firmware update to prevent their well known premature health issues due to their previous firmware).

You don't need the dust cover. If anything the cover traps heat inside that tiny space increasing temperatures. Get a proper heatsink and leave the dust cover off - plenty of videos have proven you get better temps. How do ssds inside laptops manage "dust" ...?

Yes, I buy a Ferrari today in hoping that the speed limit will one day increase from 100 to 300km/h and when that day comes my Ferrari will be perfect like day one and the new generation of Ferrari has no improvement and cost the same as now. What a irresponsible reason to promote a product that is not suitable. Shame on you!!!

Can you explain your point a little here? As I'm not really following. If you buy an SSD drive for the PS5, that you bought on day 1 Nov 2020...then IF that PS5 breaks, or you buy a pro version in 2025 or 2026...would it not make sense to factor in your 2023 purchased drive is still top end in 3yrs? .
