With the PS5 receiving a new update (currently in Beta at time of writing) one of the biggest and most requested features that has now finally been enabled is the M.2 NVMe SSD upgrade slot. It's been more than half a year since the launch of the PS5 and one of the biggest complaints from users (aside from stock levels being painfully low) is that the storage available in the default model is rather small. This new update and the ability to add additional storage has been met with mixed responses, as it has now become clear to many SSD buyers that the type of storage required for PS5 is much more advanced in architecture than the SATA hard drives and SSDs of previous generations. This, combined with an increased understanding on subjects like PCIe connectivity, Heatsinks and wrapping their heads why this new SSD tech is more expensive has certainly led to a fair share of raised voices! I have already discussed why I think PS5 using PCIe Gen 4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs is a very good thing previously, but today I want to help you choose the right SSD for your PS5.

    @@nascompares Have you tried or can you try the *XPG GAMMIX S70* ? It's the one with 7400 read/6400 write. And it's pretty cheap on Amazon. 1TB - $170 2TB - $310 It has a big heatsink which people have been removing (2 screws and slowly pull away until it's off. Then replacing the tall top portion of the heatsink with a shorter generic heatsink top half like the Eluteng or such) I hear it has inconsistent reads. But I also hear that the S70 may just need a firmware update 1st.

    In my opinion, any decent gen 4 nvme ssd, with heatsink to minimise heat will work fine, even if let's say the max sequential read speed is like 4500mbps. Loading a game usually won't be sequential and won't utilise the max speed anyways. Even if there is some difference, maybe a couple of seconds slower of loading won't affect your gaming experience.

    Gen 4 PCIe is backwards compatible. It’s not a hardware issue, it’s a software issue. Sony intentionally prevent you from using slower gen 3 or 4 drives. Imagine buying a MoBo that wouldn’t allow you to use gen 3 M.2 drives. They would work just fine and no, there wouldn’t be that big of a difference in performance. Not like the load times between PS4 to PS5 differences. The other way around (using a gen 4 in a gen 3 pcie slot), would still work but you would only get gen 3 speeds. Gen 4 is completely backwards compatible.

    Running the 1TB ADATA XPG Gammix S50 Lite in mine, with a max of 3900MB/sec, have run Ratchet and Clank, Hitman 3, Returnal, and Watch Dogs Legion off of it and compared them to running off of the internal storage, there's a variation of 1-2s at most, so it's been great for $130 for a 1TB m.2 gen4 drive. At some point a 1st party game might cause me issues, at which time I'll run it from the internal, but given the XSX/S's 2.4GB/s peak throughput, I don't imagine many if any 3rd party multi-plats will be a problem for the generation. Would be happy to be proven wrong, and I imagine I'll be swapping out the internal storage at least 1-2 times over the generation just due to falling prices on larger drives anyway, so going to ride with the ADATA for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the video!

    i got the 2tb one and the fan cranks up really high while transferring games to it from ps5's internal hard drive and it also happens periodically while playing games, do u have the same experience with yours? i have the newer model 1115a ps5 i don't know if that has anything to do with it or if the internal cooling system is just doing what its supposed to, it never happens while playing the same ps5 games off the internal hard drive or while playing ps4 games off my external hard drive and was thinking its happening because of the s50 lite being low spec but i don't think thats the case because all the info i find on the internet talking about using lower spec drives its never mentioned and doesn't seem to be an issue, i think i might put my s50 lite in an external hard drive case and use it that way and purchase a proper spec one just to be safe, it took a year to finally get a ps5 and im paranoid about it breaking even if its only a real small chance of it happening

    The Verge did test ADATA XPG Gammix S50 Lite that was under 4000 MBps read and didn't experience any issues with loading and gaming in Ratchet and Clank (but that doesn't mean it won't be an issue in the future for other games). It might be fine with an SSD that isn't fitting the specs for cross platform titles since the bottleneck there is way lower speeds than PS5 but there might be games in the future that fully utilize the speed.

    Why is everyone ignoring what Mark Cerny said last year about the ps5 ssd being technically better architecture then nvme ssds because it supports 6 true priority queues instead of just 2. And that the nvme ssd would need to be actually faster than 5.5 GB a second to compensate for that.

  • @ultimate6190

    @ultimate6190

    3 жыл бұрын

    Cerny did say that, and said he thought 7GB/s products might be required to simulate 6 priorities, but Sony didn't have SSD products to actually test back then. The good news it is seems like 5.5GB/s is enough to get near identical results. Two possible reasons, (1) the external SSD does not have to reserve IOPS for video recording and other OS functions, and (2) even 5.5GB/s drives have almost the same latency to first byte since the lane speed is still 2GB/s/lane PCI 4.0.

    in my opinion the full performance of those speeds are not being utilized. I don't believe it will damage the drive if its a little under minimum specs. as long as there is a heatsink it will be fine. If games load instantly on ps5 then its a different. The direct storage implementation of the rdna2 gpus will be the bottleneck of these pcie 4.0 drives because of the xbox series x . so ps5 exclusive might only be able to use nvme at full performance. but only like god of war 2 and future ones. But pc will also hold back ps5 ssd because horizon forbidden west was sean on nvidia data base and since nvme is so expensive it means most pc user still use pcie nvme 3.0 drives. i agree, i think these ssd are taking stress of the internal ssd that comes with the systems. games look extremely crisp and responsive. DIGITAL FOUNDRY did say the internal ssd does get lag from it always recording in game actions for saving. so when the m.s is in use you do see some better performance when games are on the m.2 and not on the ssd internal drive. i have a WD external drive, that performs slower than ssd that i find. xfer from usb to ssd is extremely long wether its internal or the m.2

    An SSD drive that is ~5GB/s raw, means ~9GB/s compressed, thus is pure I/O terms the PS5 can fill all of RAM in 1-2 seconds, Insomniac has demonstrated doing that in ~0.5s with more compressible data structures. *Thus any game that takes more than 2s to load has some innate inefficiencies of it's own* E.g. doesn't compress game data, compiles shaders or prerenders content synchronous with loading, accessed network synchronously, doesn't schedule asynchronously loading of different data so as to saturate bandwidth, or loads and then throws away a lot of data. For any game, you're only testing that ~2 seconds of actual SSD I/O. At this stage is only R&C and SpiderMan than are actually optimised for loading (and Insomniac say they can still do more!). For all other games you're testing ~2s of loading plus the fixed chunk of loading/prep inefficiency the game has. Put it another way, the real difference between a 4GB/s and 8GB/s drive loading a game is no more 2 seconds. That is all you are actually testing, regardless of a game's total load time. Large SSD speed difference makes little to no difference difference, *except* to highly optimised games.
