I think the issue is the available number of pci-e lanes coming from the PS5. An M.2 slot only has a max of x4 so you would need to find a M.2 raid card that could take x16 lanes worth of SSD's and get that talking over the x4 link into the PS5. That is why port 1 of the Gigabyte card still functioned, but also why the WD black drive would light up but not present itself because it didn't have the full x8 link.

@@ShadowriverUB The Raid card he has requires a motherboard with Bifurcation. I know because I have one. it does support NVME. Bifurcation requires 16 lanes if using 4 drives as it splits the lanes up 4x4x4x4 since the ps5 is only electrical on the 1st 4 it simply has no capacity to do the remainder. only option would be a pci-e card that is a 4 lanes raid card with a switching module like the highpoint cards.

All PCIe cards can operate in 1x mode. So while the WD Black might get bottlenecked there is no such thing as “it needing a full x8 link.” PCie lanes are parallel. 1 PCIe 4th gen lane can do about 2000MB/s - hence you need at least 4 lanes to, with overhead, hit the 5500MB/s minimum the PS5 needs. That’s also why any PCIe 3th gen won’t work since 4 lanes of that are always too slow at 1000MB/s per lane.

As soon as the external PSU came into use, I wondered it would work without problems or strange behaviors like failed formatting, because of possible missing common ground signal. Digital communication is based on binary signals. For that on the traces, lanes and wires the binary 0s and 1s must be clear enough to be surely recognizable. To make them clear enough, the whole system in itself needs a common ground (= 0V). So with introducing the external PSU and connecting it to the adapters, I am not sure if the ground signal from the PSU is connected to the ground signal of the PS5 through the adapters. To be sure you would have to put a wire from a 0V lane of the connector of the PSU to any 0V point inside of the PS5.

I highly doubt the hardware raid card will work... Those don't present as a block device like nvme, and require the kernel to support (drivers) it as a target. Beyond that iirc, sony is using some of the more advanced nvme protocol messages to optimize streaming of assets. I don't know if those would be supported by the raid driver.

What is the model of that raid card? To me it looks like a simple pcie bifurcation passive card. It doesn't seems to have a PLX in it. The nvme slot have a pcie X4 bus. So only the first nvme of that card would be really connected. (Only clock and irq lines are spliced to different slots) Edit after some research yes that is a passive card with lane switches for bifurcation. It is normal that only first drive shows up. That said it is strange that the WD black is not recognized... Pcie standard define that a x16 device could work on a x1 slot. Probably there is some other reset signal that that drive needs and that adapter is not passing it correctly? Who knows... You could try it in a PC by taping the last part of the slot in connector. And figure out what is the issue. Hmmm thinking it is is presence 2 pin. the reset one or some power good signals, what about clock request ones... 🤔 Yes pcie is very complicated... Are all the voltages provided on a m.2 slots? As fai i remember only 3.3v is provided. You provide 12V on auxiliary power supply... So probably no 3v3 STB? Or It Is showing up as a raid controller instead as a drive.... And this Is why the ps5 Is not Reading It... BTW i don't think that hw raid card will work as it probably requires a PC compliant bios to initialize it's firmware and start the raid boot process... It will be a loss of money. You should take a look at some raid boards that work on arm SBCs (those are without a bios) to at least narrow your choices. But even so the card would show up as a controller of some kind instead of a some drive... so the ps5 would not recognize It and probably will not throw an error. Probably a better chance would be using some u.2 nvme drives.

Just my 2 cents. This is a really cool novelty experiment. But over time you would have to constantly clean and keep the port dust free. But also because you're not able to close and seal the ssd port, you're compromising the ps5's ssd cooling ability because the ps5 fan uses negative pressure to draw air through the system.

You have to be slamming it with some intense shit to see thermal throttling on one of these modern ssd's. Also what did you mean keep the port dust free? You’re saying “this works” entirely too much for something that doesn’t work lol. The best case scenario for that 4x M.2 PCIe adapter was always going to be only 1 drive working. Expecting anything else just shows a lack of understand how the product (and PCIe bifurcation) works. The x16 to M.2 adapter can only carry 4 lanes, and the bifurcation card you’re using uses 4 lanes for each drive, and does not contain a PCIe switch/muxer. That’s why the “hardware RAID” (that’s not what it is BTW, but I’ll let it slide) card is so expensive, it contains a PLX switch and those things are expensive and the card itself is significantly more complicated.

Caveat Emptor: I'm not sure which Highpoint RAID card you're looking at, but I just set the SSD7505 up on Win10 (Test platform) & Win2016 Server (production) & that card DOES require drivers for RAID functionality. It Provides UEFI drivers during boot, and it Requires Windows or Linux drivers for the OS to see the RAID volume, otherwise it just sees JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks) drives. Hope this helps! As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This disc will self-destruct in ten seconds. Good luck.

The PS5 expects to see an NVME device in the M.2 slot a raid device uses a completely different protocol and would need driver support in the PS5 that it does not have. Don't expect the $600 to work due to the missing driver support for non NVME devices.

the Highpoint doesn't need a Driver, its a Hardware Level Raid Device and is detected from the Post Screen on Consumer Desktops. There is a chance it would be detected as 1 big HDD, IF! and i quote "IF" the PS5 actually had a 16x slot. it will most likely fall on its face in a 4x use case Its a Sophisticated Switching unit which prevents the need for Bifurcation allowing 4 or more NVME cards to be detected on 1 PCI-E Slot. Highpoint even do 6 and 8 Slotted NVME Raid cards but it doesn't mean you will get 6x or 8x the performance as 16x has its Bandwidth limitations. Benefits of Hardware raid is you can Raid0 your OS on install, Software raid you cannot do this. Using this on a PlayStation is Utterly pointless and Moronic Speed Tests will be Hugely Skewed as well, as big data transfers will see speed increases, the Multiple Small files on the other hand will not.

I doubt the raid card will work because nvme ssd's work over a 4 lane connection. Unless the raid card uses 4 lanes and internally creates 4 lanes to each drive, I bet at best you only have use of one drive because the nvme connection on the ps5 will only supply 4 lanes.

Yeah i have a 2 slot NVMe pcie adaptor and if i put it in my x16 slot that is only connected by x4 lanes, only one drive shows up because each drive is using 4 lanes independently. So the card would need a switch to share the first 4 lanes with the other cards so they can be used.

Showing support with a like, as dumb as buying a $600 hardware raid card is just to test a theory, someone has to, cause if it works, then just maybe there would come a consumer solution to adding 8TB or more to a ps5, and more importantly, it would bring down the cost of NVME ssd's faster. Good luck Brett!

an x16 port should work in x1 if you can plug it in, by sacrificing performance. If you see a pcie slot, it has the small hole, that where the power rails and the id signals are terminated. And the bigger slots have the data lanes. So connecting a card to a any pcie is possible and will be recognized, but if it's a heavy performance part their performance would be effected.

I would say, if you use that HighPoint RAID card, you'll need to pre configure it's BIOS on a regular PC to show a single device (RAID 0 oder JBOD). That is something I don't think you can do on the PS5. But it's just theorizing on my side, although I had a RAID controller a long time ago built in on my very first mainboard I ever owned back in the day (when IDE was still around and no one spoke about SATA just yet) and you needed to tell it in its own BIOS what to do with the connected devices. Yes, that board hat two totally separate BIOS on it and it was no double BIOS, like Gigabyte has. One normal main BIOS for the board and a sub BIOS for the RAID Controller you could only access after the mainboard initialized, kinda in between mainboard and OS. Was an ENMIC 8TTX+ for Socket A.

Keep in mind that you only have 4 PCI 4.0 lanes. So your raid card needs to be designed for 4 lanes only or compatible with just 4 lanes. This might be harder to achieve. 4 lanes by the way is a x4 slot. So with that in mind, i don't think the highpoint card will work. You should contact them and ask if you could get a version that only uses PCIe 4.0 x4. It will have to share the bandwidth but it should be doable especially with pci 4.0

Since the pcie M.2 slot in PS5 is gen4 x4 (just like every other M.2 slot), there's no way to get it working any faster than pcie gen4 x4, no matter what kind of adapter you are using with it. I think the raid card wouldn't work out of the box either since you would still need to setup the card with your PC first and that would still leave you with the x4 restriction, but you could get the capacity of all 4 M.2 drives. My bet is that it still wouldn't work with PS5.

@UFD Tech, as I understand, if you want 16 lanes of PCIe storage to fit into 4 lanes, you need a card which has an integrated PCIe switch. A card which relies on bifurcation will not work as it basically just takes a single slot and chops it into smaller slots using dedicated lanes. Some cards chop the lanes up given the number of cards, while others can give each card full speed if it's the only card in use. This behavior is not that easy to search for ahead of time. Good luck and look forward to your next video.

this does make me curious as to how that Highpoint card does this with its onboard controller because I have and IOCREST and it just uses a PLX switch meaning that you can see all 4 drives but you cannot actually make it a RAID since it effectively switches between each individual drive.

The AORUS AiC as well as the ASUS Hyper M.2 are not software cards, they are passthrough cards. They link 4x M.2 PCIe 4.0 4 Lane slots directly into the x16 slot (so lane 1-4 = Slot1, Lane 5-8 = Slot 2, and so on). They are specifically designed to work with mainboards that can enable the PCIe Bifurcation feature on the slot to see up to 4 individual drives, you can then either use software in the OS or use the BIOS to create a RAID which is then seen by the OS as a single hardware RAID disk once RAID drivers are installed. I don't see those specific cards working for multiple SSDs, but maybe a server grade HW RAID card would work (even a U.2 or MiniSAS card that supports many drives may work). But you would have to plug it into a server or PC first and create your RAID array on the firmware of the card, then disconnect it and see if the PS5 can detect the RAID drive. For best chances, a PCIe RAID card that only plugs in using PCIe 4.0 x4 would maybe be the best bet. It might be a bit tedious to setup as most of those HW RAID cards with their own RAM, CPU and Firmware tag drives by serial number and removing a drive will put the array into degraded mode, reinstalling the same drive will not allow it to resume normal operation, you will have to use the RAID cards firmware to ignore the same S/N and use it, or completely rebuild the array which means plugging the card back into a PC or Server to access the RAID card's firmware. The other issue is that those RAID card firmware usually take quite a while to POST and get the Array ready, so powering the card from the ATX PSU and powering that on well in advance of the PS5 and waiting to see if the indicator lights on the card tell you that the card is initialised might be advantageous.
