We visit the Place to Bee and Charles gets taken for a ride

Today we visit the opening of the Grantham bhive centre café and hear about their vital work. We visit the workshop to meet two of the volunteers who give their time to repair donated bikes to raise funds for the charity.
We arranged to take Charles out with us on the planned short ride through Belton Parkland. Charles is almost totally blind but loves to get out on his tandem. We take turns acting as his pilot, and today, Bruce takes his first turn. Some may consider my banter with Charles as insensitive. On the contrary, Charles is just like most of us but he can't see. He loves the banter and gives as good as he gets. In my opinion, treating him as an equal is the epitome of inclusivity.

Good to see you out again Roy, the weather has not been good so far this year. Very informative video and nice to see good work done by so many volunteers 👍🏼

What a lovely combination, re-cycling used bikes and the money raised going to a worthy charity. You mention in your header about treating people who have a disability just like you'd treat anyone else and this is so important. Most disabled people I've meant aren't looking for sympathy but to be treated just like anyone else. Obviously allowance has to be made for their lack of a particular ability but normal banter is fine. Laid up with 'man flu' at present so your video was very welcome, Thank you.👍

I feel your pain, Colin, I hope you recover soon. I made the comment in the description as I expect some do gooder will tell me I shouldn’t joke about Charles’s disability. It’s important to read the room, but from the moment I met Charles he was making light hearted comments about his lack of sight. Riding with him has made us all much more aware of communicating things we sighted folk take for granted

Heart warming that so many people are prepared to volunteer their time so that others may benefit, from mechanics to tandem pilots. Restores one's faith in human nature. Thanks again for great video.

There are some good people about, Frank. Sadly, it’s only the bad who tend to get noticed.

Great video, really interesting. Loved the tandem with the blind cyclist , fantastic that. We have a tandem club locally in Bury, Greater Manchester, where pilots take out blind or partially sighted riders. I see them regularly, in the local area, great bunch. Like you.......I struggled to keep up with the tandems with the partially sighted and blind riders as they were flying last time I saw them! Cheers Roy and Wendy.

What a fantastic job they are doing! I wish I had something like that around me. I would love to pilot for a visually impaired person. I've just ordered a hi viz vest with a speed camera logo on the back. £7 well spent. I was back marking with a wellbeing group last weekend. We had two horrendous passes - inches away at high speed. I'm hoping the vest will make them think!

A great scheme. I recently donated my old Halfords hybrid bike to a local community project and it was sold the same day to a young Asian chap who was going to use it as his sole purpose to commute to work.

It’s good to know that your beloved bike will live on, Heidi, and really help someone. I did something similar, recently. A young man joined a 30 mile guided ride on his mountain bike. He did well enough on the heavier bike, but I asked him if he had considered a road bike. He said he would love one but couldn’t afford it. So I gave him my first road bike, a Fuji Sportif. He loves it and has been clocking up some long fast rides, and I’m happy to know it’s helping someone else get started.

It was one of those situations where the bike was doing nothing but I didn’t want to part with it. I’m getting huge enjoyment from seeing him enjoy the bike and extending his range. He posted a 55 mile ride yesterday, so 100 beckons 🙂

A second video from you in March. What a nice surprise! 😊 That Bee Hive facility is very impressive. The volunteers are providing a service that is much appreciated by the community, I'm sure. That great recumbent is an almost incredible bargain. I hope it finds a good home with a rider who will take good care of it. Nice to hear that you and Wendy are almost back to 100% health. But, yeah, your energy levels may take awhile to get better. With spring weather almost there, that should help. I gotta say, every time I watch you two ride that narrow canal path, I keep thinking someone is gonna end up taking a swim! I know perfectly well that neither of you will ride off the side of the path but I can't help it. 😮 I get the same feeling watching circus performers on the high wire. 🥴 I'll work on that. 🙄

Well here’s a thing, Linda. I did a spot of volunteering on the canal. One winter, when it was almost frozen over, we took a workboat out and cracked through the ice. At one point, in a deep lock, I moved back to let someone pass and stepped straight off the side and into the deep frozen water 🥶 I was wearing a life jacket but that failed to deploy. Fortunately, there was help on hand to drag me out but it was a cold walk back to the workshops and into a hot shower. So, in short, I am now very careful along there.

Excellent video as per Roy. Bhive are doing such a great service there. Wish there were more like this. Not my favourite video of yours, purely because the was no Wendy songs? I honestly, only subscribed because of Wendy's beautiful dulcet tones! Maybe next time? #lincolnshirebeyonce
