Good to see you back. Oval rings make no difference at all, its all in your head! Used them in the past and the best you can say is they don't make things worse - provided they are in the right alignment.

Just thought I'd add to your comment (I'm 'the Dave' from the video); oh, and I have no affliliation with AB or any other manufacturer. I do disagree that the ovals make no difference; I have really bad knees and, when climbing, I can generate more usable power with ovals (I have checked with my power-meter). When I chatted to Roy, we did discuss the whole gear ratio thing - of course a 30T is going to be better than a 34T for climbing - Miche and Shimano GRX offer good/cheaper alternatives to AB; but in my experience, with bad knees, they help me optimise my power when climbing (same on my MTB). That said, I have round rings on another bike and I'm unaware of the difference, unless I'm climbing, then I fatigue more. Oh, and I have an old bike with Bio-Pace - you really do notice those rings!! (wrong/different orientation). Hope that helps, Dave (of No Two Cycles fame.. 🙂 )

Enjoyed the video as usual. The adventures of Wendy and Roy continue . 7 mile rides are for a when I have a spare. 35 - 40 minutes. 10 miles or 15 miles and a coffee and cake then back is about right. At our age it's good to avoid icey roads as we don't bounce.

I use them on my MTB 1x12, and used them on my road/gravel bike as 50/34 with 11-32 and now with a 44T 1x11-32. They definitely work in terms how power is put down on the MTB. On the road/gravel bike they work just as well. I find them easier to pedal on both the bikes.

Welcome back, Roy. 😊 When I didn't see any videos for January, I had the thought you might be taking a break. You had been very prolific in December. Planning to cut back a bit might be a good idea. After all you and Wendy have lives that need attention too. This was a lovely ride. From what you report, sounds as though you are satisfied with your oval chainrings. Anything that helps with climbing and/ knees is a good thing. I sympathize with the knee condition. Good thing my routes are practically hill free. Trikes don't climb well. 😏 I've been riding the same neighborhood routes for years and it was getting really boring. Today tho I rode in a different direction and found a great new neighborhood. Made my morning ride more pleasant than usual. Wendy, sounds as though you and Terry had a great time on your trip. Did you spend the entire six weeks over there? I'm glad to welcome you back to the cycling channel too. 😁 Well, looking forward to your next video when it's ready. Enjoy the longer days and upcoming warmer weather.

So it was good to be with family over Xmas and enjoying the sunshine! Swimming in the sea on Xmas day was fantastic if chilly! We finished off with a few days in Malaga doing the touristy bits! It was nice to have escaped the horrid weather that the UK experienced. 😀

    5 ай бұрын

There’s been a delay on that, Chris. I had completed the edit when Paul from Chilli Tech called to say that his new sub £100 4K camera was performing almost as well as the Pro 2. I returned the Pro 2 and he supplied the 4K. I’ve got most of the footage I need but I still have to test it in low light. The big thing going for this model is that it has quite decent image stabilisation, which is a great help in identifying car number plates. In all honesty it’s going to be a month away but if you are in a hurry to make a decision I’m happy to upload some example footage for you to access, plus I’ll give my impression. If you specifically need low light functionality, then I would say go for the Pro2, as it made two catches in very low light. These were both prosecuted and wouldn’t have been possible without the extra light gathering sensor of the Pro2. Feel free to email me on ridingwithroy@gmail.com

To be honest I don’t remember them making much difference then but like yourself I am pushing on a bit (nearly 68) so thanks for the review and I may look at having another upgrade. The 46/30 looks a good move as I do most of my riding in the Peak District.

I still ride it today, on my very hilly route, gear ratio's aren't ideal, as i'm past 70 now, but it's managable, and as you say, didn't seem to make any difference on the hills

Nice to see a new Ride With Roy video. Two videos a month seems to be quite a challenge. Also nice to hear you and Wendy planning longer trips. Oval chain rings certainly divide opinion, in the same way helmets, chain lubrication, drops and mudguards do. Both have arguments for and against, For me, since I turned 70, in the last 10 years I've found I need lower gears, on my 3X8 setup I'm using gears that previously I never did. I believe some pros use oval rings for mountain stages I believe, Chris Froome was a big fan. It doesn't matter which approach you take, continue to keep in the saddle. Has Wendy lost her singing voice? Thanks for the video.

High Roy, nice to see you back. Oval chainrings, there are a lot of myths about this so I decided to do my own testing. I realise you didn't buy yours just for a speed at advantage, but my testing I did look at speed as well as some other more practical aspects of oval chainrings. My second video on this can be found here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/moWsyNekqKe4pcY.htmlsi=Bs1-P5sKAlLSFljd I found no downsides to the oval chainrings, but there again no speed upsites either. As for going for that 46:30 combination, I wholeheartedly agree, I'm now using smaller chain rings on all my bikes - but none of them on how oval!

Just to add, back in the 80s I did use bio-pace chainrings. Back then I can't remember noticing any difference, apart from when in very low gears a slight quickening of my foot movement over the peddling dead spots.

Im told that the old Biopace ovals worked in the opposite sense to these, so can’t be compared. As you say, I was recommended to change to these for climbing and not speed

  • @FiveMinuteVelo

@@RideWithRoy Biopace had the larger chord (radius) in-line with the crank so effectively on the pedal down/up-stroke of the crank the bike would be in an effectively lower gear and over the top/bottom the gear would be higher. At the time I remember reading something about the foot speed changing as the chainset rotates. It did not make much sense to me then and I still cannot make sense of Biopace. Maybe that is why it was dropped. I did have a set and I noticed no difference except on the smallest chainring (tripple) when I felt a slight pulsing as I peddled. Modern chainrings are aligned so that the largest chord is about 90 degrees (or a bit more) to the crank so the highest gear is on the down/up-stroke part of the peddling action. This, from a biomechanics point of view, makes more sense to me. However in use I noticed no difference. I don't have doggy knees though. I suspect the biggest benefit comes from the smaller (number of teeth) chainrings and not the ovality.

I’m wondering how much the easier climbing is due to the reduced gearing and how much due to the oval rings. I do struggle up some of the Vale climbs on my 34x28, so I’m thinking of changing to 46/30 too. I wouldn’t worry too much about not having a high top gear. 46x11 gives a gear of 113 inches. Back in the day when we used to ride 53/39 chainrings our top gear was a 13 sprocket which gives a gear of 110 inches. Lovely tribute to Tony at the end. I don’t think I ever met him despite him being fairly local to me.

  • @RideWithRoy

    @RideWithRoy

Definitely easier due the gearing. I wish I could have tried just the reduced size round rings but not an option. Having said that, I don’t think I’d be feeling that linear smoothness without the ovals. My view is that for the extra investment it was worth me going oval to be sure, as they certainly don’t make it any harder.

Firstly, I'd like to offer my condolences to Tony's family and friends. He sounded a larger than life character, who will obviously be missed by many. R.I.P Sir. As for oval chainrings, you're right, they are Marmite. I used them about 10 years ago, for one season. After the initial set up, and niggles, I found them to be ok tbh. The only problems I encountered, were once they wore slightly. Chain dropping, awkward up shifting into the big ring etc. I have to be honest, the advantages were minimal IMO. As you said Roy, the fact that you are on smaller rings, regardless of shape, it will be easier on the climbs. I think, if it suits you, and you feel a noticeable difference, it's a win. £200 mark? Expensive? Not if it helps, but a bit of a gamble, and if the advantages are minimal, not worth it. However, as I say, if it works for a particular rider, great. Excellent video as per usual Roy. Take care Sir. Andy
