    The PC who mainly reviews the footage at Notts Police is a cyclist himself. He’s a member of my cycling club. I had a number of close passes today, overtaking in the face of oncoming traffic, on double white lines and just not giving enough room. Usually, big German 4x4 cars.

    Is that Paul, Trevor? He does a great Job. He’s taken Notts Police from zero to hero, so please pass on my thanks. The PC that identified the van was Chris. Close passes seem to have increased in the past few months. We aren’t getting the punishment passes - those types are probably camera aware by now - but just seems like a lack of awareness.

    I was happy to see a new Ride with Roy video because I wasn't expecting one until after Christmas. From the opening viewpoint it looked as if you might have been using one of those small hovering drones that have been showing up on KZread reviews. If you haven't seen one, you might want to investigate. While the gadget (I think it's called a Hover One or something like that) does have a short battery life, it still might be useful for you. Just a thought. That busy road you had to cross looked scary. For a minute I thought you had sped up the playback, but apparently not. Those vehicles were flying! 😮 Wendy, no one will be upset if you decide not to sing any carols. 😊 I got a good look at the rear taillight you use. It looked as if it is quite visible in the daytime and from a good distance. I'm trying to find one like that since I ride almost exclusively during the day. What kind is it, please? The houses on the routes I ride are showing off their holiday finery but, yes, seeing the lights at night is much better. This was another pleasant video. I found your short encounter with the swan was rather charming. The trash in the canal was disheartening. We have the same problem over here. 😒 Ride carefully both of you. 🎄✨️🎅

    Well not only are you getting this one, Linda, we’ve already filmed another one that you should get around Christmas Eve. If all works out, it will be a bit more festive - and may even feature Wendy attempting a few carols 😀 I have seen the Hover One and being a sucker for gadgets I’d love one. However, the device in this case was much more basic - a telescopic pole mount. It’s designed so that it can be removed from the shot using artificial intelligence wizardry. However, at that angle the pole wasn’t in shot anyway, so even easier. I’m pleased to hear it gave the illusion of the Hover One as it’s a fraction of the price😀 I’ll answer the rear light question for Wendy as she’s busy shopping this week. We both use Garmin Varia radar devices www.garmin.com/en-GB/p/698001. That is the source of the beeping you often hear. It warns of vehicles coming up behind but also includes that bright rear light, which changes flash frequency when it detects a vehicle. You can connect it to a smartphone to give the warning or a suitable head unit if that’s what you use. You were right the first time about the busy road - that shot was at twice the speed, otherwise it made it a long and boring clip 🥱 So you can now see that it took twice as long to cross. The limit on that road is 60mph and many see it as a target, or ignore it completely. As always, thanks for your great comments and hopefully we will be with you again before Christmas. 🎅🧑‍🎄🎄

    Few years back I came off on black ice, thankfully off-road tarmac cycle path and no injury. Since then I'm wary of the black ice risk and only out on bike when its above 5C. Using the Wahoo Snap (wheel on) trainer but agree that it's pretty boring, not the same as riding in the countryside. Cycled to Newark several times but not recently, probably time to visit again.

    Hi Roy and Wendy.You can have all the lights and hi-vis gear, but it’s not going to stop a driver taking a risk. Sadly everyone who rides has a story,or 2 to tell. I personally think it’s strange for me to mutter ‘that’s made my day’ when a driver is courteous and gives you space…just as the road rule say they should. Have a peaceful xmas,both of you, and your loved ones.

    Good to hear that you advocate cycling outdoors all year round, it's something I've always done (though I do lessen the miles between Nov and Mar). Only thing I really avoid is ice after an accident in January. I do have an indoor bike, which I set up at the start of lockdown 'just in case', I resort to it if the weather is just too B-awful. When I was much younger I used to cycle in the winter and at night . . . around Wandsworth and Battersea (London) areas - I must have been crazy then. Love your videos and hope to make a trip to your part of the world in 2024. Happy Christmas and Happy, Safe Cycling!

    Oooooo! Carols by Wendy in a future episode.👍 I've just gone down with a chest infection that I know will keep me off the bike for at least a week. I know my fitness will plummet. It's the same when days of bad weather put a stop to riding. Only then do I see the appeal of an indoor trainer. All other times it's just not for me. Very pleased the Police are taking dangerously close passes seriously. I've often wondered if those stupid drivers are cyclists? I'd personally think they aren't. I had a rather heated discussion with a french friend over cyclists using the road. She railed about cyclists stopping her passing and got cross when i told her that if a car behind would endanger us by trying to squeeze in before an oncoming car I move towards the centre of the road to stop them. She accused me of being selfish and I countered by asking what she was going to do with the 30 seconds she'd save by overtaking dangerously? I should add she's never ridden a bike. I wish you and Wendy a merry Christmas and look forward to more videos in the new year.

  • @RideWithRoy

    That’s a very un-French attitude! I suppose it depends on where in France she is from. Country folk are usually very accommodating and often hang back too long. I agree about the 30 seconds she will save - she’s probably too dumb to realise she could leave 30 seconds earlier and not risk someone’s life and a future of pain for herself. I hope your chest infection clears up soon and you can keep your fitness level somewhere near normal.

    Yes, very un-French. I made the mistake of saying I'd seen her ex-husband and his girlfriend out on their bikes. I think it was tactless of me as I know she is very bitter over the divorce.She was just grumpy and I don't know if she really feels this way about cyclists, hopefully not.@@RideWithRoy

    As an ex road rider,now a mountain biker,im glad i got off the road,trouble is,riding two abreast and ingnoring cars that need to pass is asking for trouble,and as for saying you are in your lane,thats laughable,when you pay road tax and insuranceid be more inclined to agree with you,most road cyclist think its ok to hold up traffic by riding two or three abreast like idiots,not having the intelligence to look behind at the tailback they are causing,and having the common sense to pull over!

  • @RideWithRoy

    @RideWithRoy

    7 ай бұрын

    While I agree with you about riding three abreast and not looking behind, your other comments are ill informed at best. Taking the lane is recommended practice to control drivers that don’t have the intelligence to hang back until there is room to pass. Those that do wait won’t be concerned as they wouldn’t be passing in any case. We use radar devices that inform us of traffic approaching from behind and are courteous in singling out. The point I was making is that by showing that courtesy we often invite a close pass, so taking the lane would be best. By taking the lane we are actually helping drivers avoid a close pass report and the resulting fine. The laugh is on you concerning ‘Road Tax’ I’m afraid. You will pay a pollution tax relating to the noxious gases your vehicle emits, but that isn’t paying for the roads. As we cyclists are emission free, we don’t pay anything. Roads are paid from from general taxation, including VAT, so even a child is paying for the roads when they spend their pocket money as are non car owners. Given that cyclists and pedestrians don’t wear out the roads like vehicles do, we should be getting a rebate! As for insurance, while not compulsory, thousands of us have it courtesy of Cycling UK and British Cycling. Do you have insurance in case of hitting someone on a trail? This video gives a lot more detail on proper riding techniques B****y Cyclists! kzread.info/dash/bejne/iX6Dk69pe7S0mbA.html
