Ribble CGR AL-E first ride in the rain: NOT a review! Mahle X35 ebike

My first ride on my new bike, the Ribble CGR AL-E, in fact my first ever ebike ride!
I do the short loop I did a few videos ago, to really compare the difference and how much the motor helps me on the hills. The weather was horrible, but the ride was great!

You popped up on a search for the CGR AL e, as I’m thinking of buying one. Great vid and you may have convinced me so thanks for that. After not riding for 20 years (just turned 60) I bought a Brompton two years ago and struggled, got a Swytch kit and felt like I was 40 again! Much as I love the Brompton, it’s not great for longer rides and I fancy a “proper” bike again and I think the CGR might just fit the bill.

Certainly sounds like the CGR would be perfect. It can pretty much go anywhere and do anything, whether that's a road commute or rooty single-track. It's several bikes in one and the motor just is the icing on the cake. We did a 30 mile fully off-road route yesterday with 3000 feet of climbing and the bike handled it like it was nothing. I did the same route a few weeks ago on my non electric cgr and had to walk quite a few bits of it as I couldn't get up the rocky, muddy and sandy hills by leg power alone.

Congratulations on your purchase, we bought 2 in December and they have been great - even took them on holiday to Spain 👍 Just a note, I had the same issue with my 4iiii power meter, 2 x 1mm spacers should fix it (if you haven't already. Also, I had a spectacular fall in the wet, if you went for the Riddler tyres - just be careful on cornering in the wet, I slid right across a junction and narrowly missed a logging truck which was turning left just after I'd turned right. Has knocked my trust in the tyre and they are also very easy to puncture with thorns etc, we've had 3 flats in 6 months (after about 3yrs with none). Enjoy your ALe and hope it serves you well!

Thanks! yeah, i got some spacers and its all good now. Ive got the schwalbe G -one tyres on it, same as my non e version of the cgr. They arent the best, but seem ok in the wet. Ive been very lucky and only had one puncture in all the years Ive been riding. I had a big crash in February on my road bike, which is on a video on my channel, still recovering now after all this time, so I'm very keen not to have another! Funnily enough, that was the same day I got the puncture, after the crash and completely unrelated to it! I unwittingly rode through a load of hawthorn thorns that had been left on the road limping myself and my bike back to the car.

I just got a Ribble Gravel AL-e and absolutely love it! I like that I can ride it without the assist and still get a good workout, but use the motor to help iron out some beastly hills around my local routes! Subbed :)

Very nice! It was a toss up between the Gravel and the CGR for me. We also have some pretty hefty hills and it was getting hard work to plan routes around them.. impossible in fact. Now I'm not worried. Now I'm planning routes in the Welsh mountains 🤣

@@ForestCyclingAdventures It was a toss up for me too - but I liked the green on the gravel bike better, that was basically the only reason lol. Look forward to seeing your adventures!

Congrats on the bike, watching the last video of you making that climb shows what a difference e-bikes make, not least in making the rides enjoyable. Thanks for the videos, the raw ride videos are a refreshing change from the instagram influencer style rides. Looking forward to more of them (on both your channels)

Thankyou! That's been the biggest revelation for me with the new bike. I actually enjoy the whole ride and I'm not worried about what's ahead. I said to Hatty the other day, there must be a niche for slightly crap quality and boring commentary bike videos instead of the over excited highly polished stuff KZread is full of.. well, I'm here to fill it 🤣

Really enjoyed this one. I'm a stone's throw away from the Forest, so seeing your guy's routes gives me a bit more inspiration than just sticking to Gloucester or Newent/Ledbury. Enjoy the bike!

Thanks! Definitely lots of lovely routes this way, although we say the same about your way. We have been around Maisiemore, Tirley, Tewkesbury and Gloucester but not ventured as far as Ledbury yet. The bike is a revelation tbh. Completely changed how I feel about cycling. I was struggling to enjoy it sometimes when my body just refused to play ball. We did a 30 mile route today and I feel absolutely fine.

Hi I have an orbea e gravel just bought a range extender ,My longest ride was 92 miles that's before I bought the extender ,I was always watching the battery level I have only done three rides using the extender it's fantastic no range anxiety. I put my 92 mile ride on my KZread channel and one I have just done with the extender

I haven't done any really long rides on it yet, probably 30 miles at most but I haven't been worried about range. I tend to turn it off until there is a hill so I'm often only using 30-40% of the battery. Will be interesting to see how it copes in the Welsh mountains when we eventually get time to go ride there.

Great video and lovely bike, I’ve got an Orbea Gain, I think it’s the same system, it’s a great bike, I’ve just purchased a range extender for it, gives me about an extra 50 miles

Thanks! I almost bought the Orbea, absolutely love the green colour of those. It is the same system, although some reviews I read and watched said the software controlling it was slightly tweaked and perhaps didnt offer quite as much assistance as some other x35 bikes. How true this is, I have no idea. The only reason I didnt get the Orbea was price really. Ribble had a sale on and was quite a bit cheaper than a comparable Gain. So far no need for a range extender, I did 30 miles with almost 2000 feet of climbing yesterday and only used 35% battery, so I should be good for at least 60-70 miles I'd have thought.

Yes sounds about right 60 to 70 miles, I’m hoping to try some 100mile rides so went for the range extender so I don’t get range anxiety, enjoy 😊

I have the CGR ALe too and the Garmin 530 often shows error messages, especially the low battery but just ignore them, rely on what the Mahle app tells you.

  • @ForestCyclingAdventures

Yes I figured as much. Was doing it yesterday a bit too. I googled it and it seems a fairly common issue that has never been fixed! Saying that, my Mahle app doesn't work half the time either. I can connect but that's about it otherwise it just crashes or says it cant open any settings.

@ForestCyclingAdventures I've only ever used the Mahle app to track one ride, I use the Garmin mainly as it gives better stats and links with heart, cadence and speed sensors. I was tempted to link my garmin heart rate monitor to the Mahle app as that can adjust power settings according to heart rate but never bothered in the end. One accessory worth considering is the Garmin ebike accessory, as this can adjust power from the handlebars.

Yeah I saw the Garmin remote, looks interesting. Probably easier than using the 1040, which isn't too bad but is a bit laggy.
