I had this same issue, I added more length by simply installing a key ring to the plastic one on the pad. I've said this before on other forums too, that of all the things that are adjustable on the Warrior pads, I'm surprised that toe tie tension is not one of them!

Thanks for your comment! Adding a keyring is a great quick solution! I unfortunately wanted like 3-4" but the keyring is a great hack for some! Yeah, you're right, with all the other adjustable points, it's surprising the toe strap didn't have more size options.

Had the same problem with my G3s. Boot strap ended up going through the Lundy loop and I added a piece of skate lace to the toe bridge area and just connected the toe strap to the skate lace. I didn't need so much slack once the strap wasn't running through the entire width of the boot. I would then just clip it back to the piece of skate lace after looping through my runner . Worked perfect.

Cool mod! I'll have to keep an eye out for this with my g4 sr's. I haven't noticed this issue for me yet, but I have had the inside of the calf landing get stuck inside my skate! I'll be trying out the rear response strap in the traditional "under the skate" position as I have been using the Lundy loop with them so far. I think that'll help keep the pad down on my skate more.

Thanks for your comment! Yes, running the back heel strap through your skate cowling (not through a Lundy Loop) does help keep the pad more on your skate. I gave the factory straps a good 7-8 skates to break in, but it was clear the toe was never going to be as loose as I like it!

I have had the same problem with the toe trap on my G4's being too short/tight. I have two ideas I might try. First, I find that the factory boot strap is about the right length, so I may just buy the strap kit and replace the standard toe strap with the boot strap. The other idea I have is to create a whole new strap by using a 1" elastic velcro (VELSTRETCH) strap and looping it and attaching a new hook. I actually had a puck strike the plastic toe hook the other night and it shattered, so I'm considering replacing the hook with a metal hook. I love my G4's and the active straps are an amazing innovation in my humble opinion. I just think metal hooks and longer/adjustable straps would make them perfect!

Wayne, love your content, super helpful making a recent transition from pillowy Vaughn's with a double break to these super stiff G4's. I've been tinkering with the toe strap length (added a key ring per other's suggestion), but still not sure how best to wear the boot strap. I'm reading some folks prefer to play without it entirely, which I tried this morning, but found the pads are rotating inwards while I'm up in my stance, which slightly exposes the outside of my upper knee (no good). Any advise on how best to wear the bootstrap (around the heel, or cowling) and how tight to make it? Thanks!

Hi! Love your videos!! my new pads are GT2s (had old circa 1999 pads up until this pair) and i keep having the issue of them over lapping at the top when i’m trying to move in the net and when i’m trying to skate😩. I lundy loop at the back on the most slack setting…and i recently put on pro-lace like toe ties but still they overlap! should i be off setting my toe ties more? Is the toe of my skate supposed to hit the ice when i butterfly? Any help would be awesome and much appreciated!!!

You could try and remove the bootstrap so u get more ankle movement , unless if u like it with the boot strap keep it

  • @VOGoalie

    @VOGoalie

I may do that. For me, because I wear my pads fairly loose, the boot strap has always provided an anchor to ensure that my knee lands on the knee block. But with the way the G4s wrap around my leg, I might have to experiment more... Thanks for your comment!

Whats an alternative to toe ties? If my laces are tied tight everything is disconnected and it strains everything but when they are longer my pads move around too much to the point its inconsistent. Help

How much longer is the modded toe strap from the original? I'm thinking carabineer at the end of the buckle could also help extend the strap.

These look great! How long did you end up making them? Have you had any problems with them or think of anything that you would change about them? I really want to do something similar with my G3s.

Thanks for your comment! The overall length when the two velcro ends are closed is 11". Funny, you ask if I would have done anything different! First, the velcro loop actually holds a little too well and is more difficult to take off than the Factory Warrior clip. In hindsight, I would have reused the original clips. I also would've gone with a darker colored elastic instead of white as it shows stains from the posts. Lastly, I would have done the overall construction differently. I would've taken one piece of elastic, folded it over and inserted the clip on the looped end. In between the two loose ends, I would have sandwiched a length of Velcro One Wrap instead of nylon webbing. This would allow a greater amount of adjustability in overall length. It also would have cut down on labor (as I would have probably just put a stitch across the clip area to keep it secured and then a double stitch at the loose ends/ Velcro One Wrap. I might still do this... or just buy Warrior's XL strap kit!

Thanks for the quick reply. After seeing Kirk's comment I started looking for the Warrior XL strap and the only one I could find was on Goalie Monkey but it lists the toe strap at only 9.5 in which doesn't seem like it would be long enough (only gaining 1 inch). Thanks for your detailed explanation about what you would change. I haven't really ever had a problem with attaching or detaching the toe strap (other than really having to pull on the elastic to get it there or off) so I think I want to use the clip but am always sooooo worried about cutting up something incase I ever want to reuse it later. Have you seen anywhere we can get just the clips? Or even better something similar that we could get somewhere local like Michaels? As for getting rid of the nylon webbing, I can totally see the use of cutting it from the one end (where the clip goes) but think I may still keep it on the other. Sandwiching the velcro will still have me having to put both hook and loop sides there and folding it. With the nylon it seems like it will be a stronger hold over just the two sandwich pieces.

A 9.5" toe strap might work. I honestly like my toe set up looser than most and when attached, the elastic in my DIY strap is not actually stretching all that much. For all of my strap supplies, I use a site called strapworks.com. They seem to have everything you need, but I wasn't able to source a good aftermarket clip. Another option is you could try the XL kit and if it's just a tad too short, you could sew some sort of extension strap to the velcro end that attaches at the toe to give that little extra length. Then you wouldn't be modifying any factory straps.

Even though this video is already over year old it motivated me to do my own mod. For the longest time, I thought that knee pain is normal for goalies and as long as you can walk it off everything is fine. I did some research and found out that adding extra knee stack on the knee landing helps relieve the pressure that is going to you knees. So I took my old pads from the garage, stripped the old knee stack and added them to my new pads and they work wonders! Now I don't feel any pain, I feel that I move faster and for a bonus my shoulders are inch higher when I'm in the butterfly (don't tell the refs ;))

The outer post wedge is actually stitched into the side of the outer gusset. You may be able to unstitch it (as well as the couple of elastic tabs that keep it from flapping around) but it's more of a permanent feature rather than an easily removable one. that being said, it is thinner than the previous G3 flaps were and i haven't noticed any interference at all.

Thanks for the suggestion! Actually, the G4's are designed with two different heel strapping options (one straight back for behind the heel or lundy loop and the other angled downward for through the skate). Actually, I've been meaning to try behind the skate position. Maybe when I'm brave, I'll have to give it a whirl. Thanks for your comments!
