    Everyone is always looking for mobility. And I totally understand however, we have to take into account how we make saves in our chesty. It’s the same with sticks. We size them to our butterfly. I can’t remember the last time I needed to put my glove over my head for a save (granted I can be a bit of a sieve at times) as long as your chesty doesn’t inhibit you making normal goalie motions this fine. As for size, that’s preference. I’m about to test my new CCM Premier Pro after using my Vaughn Epic 8404 for almost a life time. So we will see how that goes. Playing in beer league and being older I’m going for size. I play pretty close to blocking style with some hybrid thrown in there, but I’m starting to utilize a lot more current style like the butterfly slide and RVH. Anyways, love the content and keep up the good work!

    I have a Vaughn LT, Reebok P4 and Warrior G4. The Vaughn was mobile, but left a lot to be desired in the arm protection. The Reebok is a tank, absolute beast like your Brian’s, I rarely use it now, it’s too big. The warrior is a mix between both. Really mobile, and above average protection for me. But kind of like you I’m facing a dilemma, I look HUGE in it. I’m 6’2” 200lbs and it’s a Large, I don’t know what else I can do to appear slimmer. Either way though, my warrior gets 95% of my ice time. Great video.

    Favorite chesty; vaughn v7 pro carbon (I'm a medium) When using a XL Flite Chaos 3500 chesty I couldn't move properly, didn't realize the holes it created, because the fit was terrible. I ended up cutting it up and gutting out alot of the padding so it wouldn't interfere while moving around, but that resulted in bruises (go figure). I believe there's no point in being bigger if you're bigger at the wrong spot, so having a mobile chesty allows me to play better because I can be where I need to be in less time and effort, everyone is different though!

    I play Major Midget AAA and I use all Bauer 1s/2s gear. I found the chestie I use (1s) to have very low mobility. Call me crazy but i like the way it feels while not being too restrictive i like these because i find that they keep you in a very natural position, lowering the margin for error when doing a leg recovery to an open shooter. That way it allows you to focus more on your angle rather then if their are any openings in between your arms. Just my 2 cents could all be in my head though! Great video 👍🏼

    I definitely prefer more mobility, but at a broad 6'1 so I have the benefit of blocking built in. I'm using a pro return Bauer Pro and the floaters conform to my shoulders well. It's an XL but I don't tuck so I need the extra belly length. If you tuck it could cause the shoulder floaters to sit up even higher. The best chestie I ever used from a mobility standpoint was a Reebok P1. Might be hard to find now but I saw that Kenesky is starting to make some really good looking clones. There are some sweet pics on their Instagram. Really enjoy your content and regular uploads.

    I’m 5’8” and use a medium warrior g2. Absolutely love it. As with all warrior gear you can customize it to your liking. I wear mine untucked and somewhat loose around the torso. Tight on the arms. I agree though, I think a medium chesty with small arms would suit you well. Or a warrior medium. You can customize the arm length. Warrior is where it is at. G4 pads, glove, and blocker. G2 chesty, and warrior ritual x pants. #VOGsquad

I found them so comfortable that I bought a second pair and get them in storage in huge ziploc bag. Coming from a Koho 588 Pro large to a Warrior G2 Pro large... The warrior is so much bigger and protective. I had to do so much to get the Koho to be protective and stay where i wanted. The arms where cinched down as tight as they go and I had to tie down the back to my pants to keep the top from sliding down. The warrior just feels amazing, no complaints yet There is a confidence to playing and feeling big, but if you cant move fast then people will find wholes and pick you apart. I think that fitment is the key as well, just because its big doesn't mean that it fits.

    You bring up a great point about confidence and feeling good in proper fitting gear! Especially when it comes down to a CA, if you don't feel confident it will protect you and are moving your body out of the way of shots to try to get your hands on it, then it totally negatively impacts your game! Thanks for your comment and sharing!

    I would say mobility but playing bar league i'd go with protection. Some of those old guys can still bring the heat! I'm 5'10" and wear XL Brown, my protection is top notch and same with my mobility. I also have a Brian's custom Optik chesty which fits tighter and is made longer than the Brown in the chest length. Think it all comes down to how much you want to spend on gear. I also like your videos with all the info and ideas you got. I'll keep watching them!

    I’m newer to the sport, only been playing a little over a year. When I started I bought a CCM premier chesty, which is Absolutely massive. I thought it would be the best direction to go due to my slow reflexes, bad play reading, sluggish movement etc of a beginner. About 3 months Into it I ended up selling it and buying a Bauer Vapor x900 and never looked back. Polar opposites as far as build and size. The vapor is tight hugging, smaller, and the mobility is far superior. Now my reflexes and speed and fluidity is improving, I’ve noticed having higher mobility (despite less net coverage) is a massive improvement for me personally over having huge pads that I CANT move in. Not Trying to bash the CCM, it is a much higher build quality than the Bauer

    I just noticed the responses to your request for ideas for the ideal chest protector and have the following: Background; I’m a 65 yr old goalie (6’ - 3” tall), playing on average 5 games per week between September and mid April. I play in two separate senior leagues, plus two games of pick up with much younger (mid 20’s to early 50’s) players with an average skill level of Canadian Junior B (but go as high as former NHL drafted players). Playing with this group forces me to prioritize mobility over protection as their speed and skill with moving the puck is extremely quick. They often force me to move laterally at least twice before facing a shot - and yes; I’m absolutely exhausted after a 2 hour game! I own Brian’s G-NETIK (with as much protection as possible without impacting my comfort and mobility). My recommendation to you would be to not settle for anything that doesn’t allow maximum mobility while feeling comfortable. Good luck; and play hard, we never know how long we’ve got before we can’t play the best game around! So make the most of it!

    I wear a used Vaughn V6 chesty. It was Jimmy Howard’s. I am 6’1” and it fits me very well, not too bulky. I believe it’s an XL. Part of me wants to try out a large but it’s hard to find a store that sells goalie gear where I live and I am not about to order one online. I also have a Vaughn Matt Murray chest and arm, I think it’s a V6 or V7, again fits very well on me. Not saying you should switch to Vaughn but perhaps give it a try. I tried CCM and Reebok before and just didn’t like the fit, there were so many straps to adjust and I couldn’t get the arms to fit just right, they always felt they were falling down and I adjusted the straps a lot!

    Nice! I think with CAs, it's hard to judge a line by a Pro Return. There could just be so many unknowns about factory modifications. I did use 2 Vaughn CAs in the 90's so maybe I'll have to give their new ones another look. It's funny, I always attribute a new CAs awkwardness to the "break-in" time, but then never really re-assess if it actually ends up working out for me. Thanks for your input!

    the sherwood chesty looks to be to low in the collarbone neck protection area, even with neck guard and dangler should have better coverage there. I do find mobility to be an issue with my chesty (ccm extreme flex 1.9) but great coverage. I wear a senior medium I'm 5'10", once on the ice don't really find it a hindrance except when taking mask on and off and taking a drink. I would like to eventually find a chesty with good mobility AND good coverage, but I am new and good for now.

    Thanks for your comment! You're right, the chest does hang low! I think it's a little misleading as I'm not wearing goal pants. I actually like the neckline to be a little higher so I typically clip the C/A's backplate to my pants. While I do wear both a neck guard and a dangler, there's such a fine line between shoulder floater and mask integration. But at the end of the day, I'm ok sacrificing mobility for protection! I am 57 and 6’3”. When I decided to start playing again about 8 years ago, I used my old Cooper BP29 chest pad and Cooper SA95L arm pads. Like you say, old shoe feel. But I thought I needed to be bigger, so I went to a Bauer Vapour 50 SR. XL.. I liked it and was comfortable, but I had trouble with losing pucks.. when it wore out at Christmas 2017, I purchased the CCM Premier R1.9 SR XL. Today, I feel more like Robocop than a goalie. I mostly play pickup, but fill in for league games as well. I play with guys that are ex-junior, to guys in their 70’s. My preference is my old gear. I still throw it on once in a while with my old Cooper GM9 gloves. I am smaller, but have so much more movement. I can feel the shots and can react bet to rebounds. The shots I feel don’t feel any harder than when I get hit with the new stuff on the seams, or joints in the chesty. Smaller, if it has the protection built in, should be better. Goalies will return to the more athletic game that we are known for, instead of the dropping to the knees and sliding side to side.

  • @nadimadatia
    @nadimadatia5 жыл бұрын

    If the size between the two units was the same, I don't think the "bulk" of the Zero-G would be as impacting/detrimental to your mobility. Having said that, and having zero familiarity with the Sherwood, you may have the option to do one of my favourite things: Modify. Try unlacing the arms from your Zero-G and lacing them into the Chest from your Sherwood and vice-versa, You could figure out if the lack of mobility in the Zero-G is from the shoulder floaters or the elbow blocks (which is kinda what I'm seeing in the video). Personally, I'm a dedicated Brian's fanboy, and since having gotten back in goal have used two units: the SubZero1 and the Gnetik Pro2, both Senior Small. I LOVED the larger shoulder floaters of the SZ1 but loved the chest, ribs, and arms of the GN2. Bottom line, as a smaller goaltender I think the largest mental leap with regards to "occupying space" is to occupy the space that THE PUCK sees, and not THE SHOOTER ie Box Control. Working with the ropes (if possible) or using your video footage and in post drawing the lines connecting the post corners to the puck will allow you to see that if you're needing 1-2" of shoulder height to make a save, you're depth or angle are probably wrong anyways... Love your content.

Cause i had bought the bauer around 4 months back when i was like 5'5 ish and i was wounder would it be smart to sacrifice mobility for size and protection because in my leauge and stick and pucls im not the smallest of goalies and most beer leauge players assume that im older and go all out witch i dont mind just i can feel almost everything even in games and in my bauer i can still feel it just not as a pain feeling.

    Hey, thanks for your comment! My suggestion would be to go with your senior small unit, especially if you're skating with adults. When in doubt, go with what protects you best. Better to sacrifice mobility and blocking for safety! And you're still young and if you grew 3" in 4 months, you'll probably need a new one soon anyway!

    I'm 5'7" but imo chest and arm size really depends on your torso length/size and arm length. Ideally, I could do between a medium or large body (depending on if I go tucked or untucked) and small arms (as I generally have shorter arms but also like to have no interference with my gloves). There are newer (or custom) options that dial in a better fit with exchangeable arms but be prepared for more bulk compared to your older DR unit. Hope this helps!

    @@VOGoalie well... The shoulders are definitely less bulky but I (and I think others) have found the arms to be kinda tough. Folks with thicker arms won't like the 'snugness'. I like the fit but the extra padding requires a longer break-in. I'm comfortable with the unit but if I were to order custom, I would get Sub-Zero 3 arms on it. Final note, the belly pad is connected to the lateral padding on either side with elastic meaning you can't do a sort of hybrid tuck.

    In days past pads and gloves were leather and stuffing basically. They were smaller to save on weight and when they got wet they got heavier. There is a photo somewhere with John Bower standing in the net it shows how small he looked in comparison to the net. I would like to see goalie equipment shrink a bit. Goalies now are big and cover a lot of net. Equipment is lighter and and more protective. Maybe measuring the total weight of equipment as opposed to the dimensions of each piece could be a standard.

  • @VOGoalie

    Exactly! IMO, gear sizing regulations are getting a little absurd. I think they just want to give Kay Whitmore something to do by initially every piece of gear! I think I'd be a lot easier to go back to the old rules of the same capped size limit for everyone. If a goalie wants to wear oversized gear but compromise their mobility then that's their choice. What these rules are actually doing is weeding out smaller stature goalies as the perception is a bigger guy is better (which hopefully we all know is not the case...)

  • @VOGoalie

    @VOGoalie

    5 жыл бұрын

    Short Answer: yes. Long Answer: With advancements in stick technology, guys are shooting harder than ever before. And not just at the NHL level. With chest protectors, the only way to preserve a goalies mobility is to design C/A that are layered. This in turn makes them bulky. If it wasn't this way, flex points would be the soft spots in the C/A which functionally be at joints like elbows, shoulders and even to some extent through the torso. So the conundrum is designing a unit that allows for the flexibility required but adequately protects while having the durability to withstand consistent puck impacts. Could some things like the shoulder floaters be tapered? Sure, but unlike current goalie pad designs (which are super thin as they don't require much flex), thinning out C/As effectively reduces protection.

    @@VOGoalie I hear ya but I have to slightly disagree. Most shots these days are wrist shots unlike years past when there were larger number of slap shots. Why you say, the game much slower back then leaving more open shots since players had more time. Then game is so fast now , wrist shots are the preferred since that time to shoot has been greatly diminished. Stick technology has been around for sometime now. Players with the composite and aluminum sticks were hitting 100mph before these goalie pads were inflated like the Michelin Man. If I agree with what your saying, I hear ya, then why don't we just use a giant cutout board in the goal, what's the difference?

    Thanks so much for your perspective! You make some really great points! I think when it comes down to the NHL ruling on goalie gear sizing, there are lots of valid points on both sides. With regards to the wrist shots vs slapshots, you're right, the speed of the NHL game (and overall strategy) has changed dramatically over the years. But today's wrist shots can still sting. Coupled with the increased speed means that guys can't react fast enough and end up getting hit in the chest and arms because they can't get their hands up as quickly as in "the old days". I think the NHL guys are just tired of being the target of rule changes to "increase scoring". Gloves, blockers, pads & pants have all been reduced in size but I think for NHLers, the chest protector is the last straw. My biggest concern frankly, is the trickle down effect to everyone else. If in fact reduced C/As are less protective and that becomes the standard, it eventually becomes the standard for amateur and rec guys too. And while I'm by no means facing NHL level shots, the last thing I want to do is get hurt in beer league. I think it'll interesting to see how this whole debate shakes out after this current NHL season. Thanks so much for contributing to the conversation!

    Im in a vaughn pro xf? Its mobile but the shoulder floaters can impede mask movement. I have seen on facebook. Kennesky cranking out pro level stuff with the nhl spec. It looks pretty sweet, similar to brown style floaters. They were pricey though like 700 usd.

    Awesome, yeah, I saw those Kenesky units too. They look pretty sweet! You make a great point about how your mask and CA can impede each other. I actually have an extended chin on my mask so I totally have a smaller range of motion. Thanks for your comment!

    I wore an Itech Prodigy 4.8 chesty for about 3 years before upgrading to a Reebok p4. The p4 was bulkier and definitely made me feel safer, as it had a lot more protection, but it was incredibly difficult to move in. I went back to my Itech but took too many stingers and decided to look at an upgrade. I got a Bauer s190 thinking it would perform like my Itech since Itech got bought by Bauer. I like the streamline feel as opposed to the bulky. I think I let more goals in under the arms now with the Bauer than I did in my p4, but I feel so much more comfortable and confident in it. I also went down a size, since the p4 was so big and bulky that i cold not touch my face at all. The s190 allows mobility, great protection (I haven't felt any shots in it), and just feels more natural and comfortable.

    Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I feel like I'm in a similar boat with my current C/As! Glad to hear about your experience with a newer model! And great point about giving you confidence as well. Having confidence in yourself and your equipment can make all the difference!
