    Hi Thomas, love your videos, very informative. Can you tell me when measuring the voltage on the radiator switch , should there be voltage there all the time or does the engine have to be up to temperature. My fans aren’t coming on and there is no voltage at the switch. Fuses are all ok. Thanks 😊

    On the 5 cylinder engines... one of the 3 wires should have power all the time. High & low speed can be activated with the engine off / key removed. On the VR6 Eurovans (I'd have to check / confirm / can't remember 100%) I believe low speed can be triggered (key off) but key needs to be on for high speed. Which engine do you have?

    My fans exploded on the highway and took out the radiator also. So, since somebody asked: I also had to RnR the radiator and it's barely much more work than the fans. Just make sure the AC lines are unclamped (OEM will have a bolt and clamp but aftermarket radiator didnt') then separate the condenser and steering cooler from the radiator. Disconnect big and small radiator hoses and lift out. Move the sensor and the rubber parts over to the new radiator and drop back in. reiinstall fans. etc. Fill and test! Be prepared for it to burp itself while driving and need a little more coolant, so bring along first couple of outings.

    Sorry about the late reply... I don't pay attention to name brands when I get my parts (I don't order parts, I just install them). Some things I remember... like a door harness today that was genuine VW. Most Euro parts places stock items that are of decent quality... when they get too many customer complaints about parts / returns, they stop stocking those parts. So if it's still listed on their site, the parts are still known to be OK. Certain things I would not go with the cheaper version... with rad fans, I think even the cheap ones should be good for quite a while.

    @@EXOVCDS Thanks. Good point. If FCP Euro, or Europarts SD (both In USA) is selling them, then they are probably not getting very much grief from customers. Especially since FCP has good long in-house warranty, why would they sell poor quality if it costs them later?

    Yes... but could also be a bad fuse or the relay that controls low speed. Check the fuses first. You should hear a relay clicking when low or high speed is selected. The relays are usually mounted behind the headlight (can be seen in my videos). Use a test light to confirm power getting to the relay and coming out of the relay (when triggered). If you don't see individual relays, then it will be one large "fan control module".

    The fans in my 93 eurovan mv engine AAF. (Automatic gas) have been getting loud and need replacing. My fans seem to have some kind of louver behind them and I’m not sure if they are opening or not. Do you know how this louver opens and closes and would you recommend replacing the whole assembly? Thanks

  • @EXOVCDS

    Between the fans is a thermostat that mechanically opens the gills when it gets hot. Later year vans do not have these gills. If you are worried that they do not open... you can remove the two 10mm screws that secure the thermostat to the radiator fan panel. Once the thermostat is removed, you can rotate the gill ring to open the gills. The gill ring is spring loaded, so it can remain in the open position once in that position. Turn the gill ring counterclockwise to open the gills ( reach over the radiator, grab the ring and move it).

More steps might be required... this was just off of the top of my head / paraphrased.

    Hey Thomas. I used your video and was able to change out my fans and resistors and all was good...or so I thought. I've noticed that they're pretty aggressively noisy when they start up, so I asked my local VW dealership to check them out while I had it in getting something else looked at. They said it's because I didn't use VW fans at $330 each versus ACMs at $80 each. Do you think that can really be the issue? They also say it's a 2.5 hr job - it didn't even take *me* that long and I didn't know what the hell I was doing as I did it!! Thanks for the video - I would have never gotten this far without it! :)

  • @EXOVCDS

    @EXOVCDS

    Noisy because they come on at high speed? Year, make, model, engine? Can you trigger low & high speed individually? If the vehicle has resistor packs for the fans.. are they OK?

  • @boorayin2773

    @@EXOVCDS Thanks for your reply! '97 Eurovan VR6. Yeah, they're really noisy when they come on and kinda even shake the vehicle (of sorts). They don't stay on long when the come on, either...just long enough to let me know that they're on and then they cut off. I changed the resistors out at the same time. I'm picking it back up from the shop after they quoted me $1000 to install VW-brand fans for a 2.5 hr job. It didn't take me 2.5 hrs and I had to keep watching your video!! I'll try to jump them tomorrow to see if I have two speeds. I assume my resistors are okay since they were new, perhaps I didn't hook them up correctly and that's why the fans are shutting off so quickly?

  • @EXOVCDS

    @EXOVCDS

    5 жыл бұрын

    The fans just have a power & ground wire... and you shouldn't have issues with the resistor packs / getting them connected incorrectly, due to the connector design. If they are noisy & fast, then high speed is coming on and you need to see why low speed is not (rad fan switch).

  • @boorayin2773

    @boorayin2773

    @@EXOVCDS So, I first tested my fuses...all good. Then, I jumped the fan switch and am good on both low and high. I did notice a bit of a rattle as one of them starts/stops - I wonder if I do indeed have a bit of an unbalanced ACM-brand fan and that bit of vibration is what I'm feeling inside the vehicle when it starts/stops? It wasn't a crazy amount of noise from the fans, though - it just wasn't like this back when I had the previous fans in there. Perhaps I should change out the one fan with a new brand (but not the $330 VW-brand one)?

  • @EXOVCDS

    @EXOVCDS

    5 жыл бұрын

    Vibration from an unbalanced fan can be felt inside the vehicle.... especially if a rattle from the mounting cage is also present. Contact the seller and ask if you can exchange the noisy one. Record a video, post it on your channel and send them the link. Activate one fan at a time, so that they can see & hear the difference. Vibration in the long run can / will affect the mounting cage and possibly crack it.
