Had to do this basically on the side of the road on my 03 VR6... Note that the late 24V eurovans use the same water pump as the R32... not the same as the old 12v pump! Found that out the hard way... At least access in the EuroVan is easy compared to the cars. The one you worked on in this video uses the earlier style pump.

Noticed u using the holding tool on da pulley which is nice, but look into the ingersal rand hammer head, its a side impact ratchet, works like a impact gun but with a style like a air ratchet, no kick back! No knuckle bustin! Look into it that's my favorite tool now which I use for lil work but swappin motors n granny with it makes it 12x easier lol

Outstanding! If it's a vr6 in a small car, you could just lift the engine by removing the front and back motor mounts.

I so regret following the Bentley manual and trying to take off the Water pump without Taking off the pulley first. This component seems to get more corrosion than the others and one of the female hex bolts under the pulley on the pump itself, got stripped. May have to heat it up with a torch and hammer a 12mm socket around it. Or cram a Hex Allen socket of what? -6.5mm or -SAE (5/8ths? 9/16ths “?) -Wait, maybe sacrifice a torx socket? Should have followed your advice.

Here's a video of a stripped bolt on a VR6 Jetta... use a chisel to knock it free / loose. You can see me doing so at 10:41 kzread.info/dash/bejne/ipuEqdKcf5WcYqw.html

That VR6 was really cramped in there, but it looked like a manageable job to get to the pump. Thomas, I've seen you use the hold-down bar in a few videos, and it looks like a good tool. On a side note, what type of tool do you use to hold the crank in place if you were to tighten the crankshaft bolt to spec. I don't recall seeing a tool in your tool of the week videos. I usually end up making a flat plate to secure the crank pulley and let it rest on the floor. I know they make tools to hold the flywheel teeth in place, but I've never thought it was good to put a tool on the teeth of a flywheel when you're putting a lot of torque down on the crank bolt. Thanks Thomas for sharing the video and keep up the good work!

stuzman52 I've got a few crank pulley locks tools... I borrow my coworker's when I don't have the right one. I usually use the impact to loosen the bolt and use the holder for tightening. The stretch bolt torque to yield can be unnerving trying to reach the correct angle... just like when tightening head bolts. Holding the flywheel teeth for pressure plate or flywheel torque is not that bad for it as long as it has a good grip of the teeth... wouldn't want to try it though when tightening a front crank bolt to 300+ ft lbs.

stuzman52 There's a factory tool especially for the Eurovan. It's still available through the VW tool program at Snap On. It's about $100.

I drained my 2002 T4 using the plug in the bottom of the plastic "crack" pipe. It came out easily and didn't seem especially brittle. I was careful, though.

I think regular flushing or at minimum loosening & tightening of the screw is what keeps it from seizing or breaking.

***** Thanks for the video. Other than lifting the vehicle and removing the belly pan (always the hardest part with a 5,500# Eurovan) you made this job look pretty easy, and without any really special tools to speak of.

***** The rated capacity for the refill is 8 quarts. Mine took almost exactly that. One gallon G13 and one gallon water.
