It's probably a Busso V6

Vr6 is good for saving space as it's nearly as narrow as an inline but also only slightly longer than a i4 . It has a more compact footprint.

It’s got a single cylinder head and the angle of the v is about 15 degrees. VR stands for “V-Reihe” which translates to V-inline. So it’s kind of a combination between a v and an inline engine. I believe the firing order is the same as a inline-6 too.

And because of the weird configuration of the cylinder head I believe the intake and exhaust ports are unequal in length, so that adds to the growl in the engine sound.

Been driving a mk4 jetta vr6 for years now and i still love it definitely going to add a turbo in a few years

Currently own both, in a Golf R32 and a Lexus RX350. My VW VR6 sounds more sporty to me as I hardly hear the exhaust on the Lexus lol. 6cyl inline engines still best though.

I think this V6 have an X pipe that's why the pitch is too high.

If anyone ever listened to the Alfa 2.5 or 3.0litre V6 there would be an overwhelming vote for V6 configuration. Though the VR6 is a well made engine (with really unique pistons) and sounds similar to a 5 cylinder at low rpm. Nice, but not as wicked as a good V6.

Personally prefer the sound of the VR6 , it's more throaty if that makes any sense

Best sounding V6 is the Arese Busso Engine from Alfa Romeo. There are man different V6 sounds depending on firing order. All Mitsubishi V6 for example has 1-2-3-4-5-6 which leads to a calm and relaxed but grumbeling V6 sound. Alfa Romeo has high pitched V6 sound, Nissan and Volkswagen V6 sounds great too

I’ve just gotta love the extra rasp of the VR6. To be honest, though, a B6 would be my first choice in terms of sound.

VR6 has a more linear note resonance curve. The V6 get those resonant spikes that sound annoying.

The vr6 is like having an inline 6 without the height/weight penalty of an inline 6.

The vr6 is so unique. It sounds like a 5 cyl at low rpm but higher revs it sounds like a inline 6😮‍💨

V6, but I think a VR6 with a 1-2-3-6-5-4 firing order (alternating between banks) could give it a run for its money.

When it comes to sound, VR6 was truly a marvel. There are other unique and beautiful sounding engines like Subaru's boxer with unequal headers, Aprilia's V4, Triumph triple, Mustang V8 or Lexus LFA's V10 but VR6 will always have a special place in my heart. This video doesn't do it any justice but i appreciate the effort!

VR6 Chewy all day! Love my R32! Its so different sounding and when it downshifts its sounds amazing.

Of course the VR wins. I've had 4 in the past. 2 mk3 gti's a swapped mk3 golf and swapped mk2 jetta. You can't beat that ever so sweet growl a VR makes. The bottom end can also handle a good amount of power stock.

VR6, but they're big pretty sexy!

I think the vr6 sounds better, especially at low rpm because it has more throat and the tone is deeper compared to the v6.

Cummins inline 6 cylinder turbo diesel beats them all. Never buy a new vehicle, or a gasoline engine, Cummins 12 valve turbo diesel is always better in every way. 30 mpg, 350hp 720 ftlbs torture. And million mile longevity

i had a 2000 Jetta VR6 manual i bought in 1999 as first new car. That was the 2nd best engine I've ever owned. It was an rpm beast & could move those 3rd gen VWs quickly.

I didn't bother finishing the video. The VR6 sounds way better. Proper engine sound!

Both sound pretty similar to me, plus most of the difference in sound likely comes down to the state of tune of the engine, exhaust setup ect.. not to mention different recording conditions as well Firing/crankshaft interval is what is really important, which is why a flatplane and crossplane V8 sound so different. Both V6, VR6 and also Inline 6 have a crank interval of 60 degrees, so in theory if you could get the exhaust setup and engine specs identical, with the only difference being the layout, I doubt you would be able to hear the difference

You can squeeze 240hp n/a from the 2.8l over 300 with the 3.2l Add boost and the bottom end is good for 700hp

TT 3.2 VR6 here-with a manual and sweet Magnaflow exhaust. It's my second one.

I love both. I have a 93 Taurus SHO and a 2000 Jetta VR6

I love the Busso's split crank pins. I wish all V6's were made that way. Split pins and offset cylinders for maximum strength, compactness, and ideal inline-6 style sound.

The best amount of air (Hg/in) from the VR6 is what makes it sound so good, thanks to Germany's Automotive engineers, the VR5 and VR6 are great engine configurations to fit in my 2003 mitsubishi lancer with enough space for a 2003 Volkswagen 2.3 liter VR5 engine.

I have an Atlas VR6 with a wookie pipe. I sometimes drive in manual mode just to hear the high revs. It ain't no R32 but still sounds real nice.

Believe it or not the v6 sound is from a 2009 Honda Accord with a silly exhaust. I put the gtr hashtag in there because I'm naughty 😁

V6 sounds like they used a sample from a VQ. It’s that trombone.

I prefer the V6. Grew up working on cars since I was, quite literally, a toddler. LOVE cars of all kinds, shapes and sizes but I definitely love the V6.

VR low down, V6 top end 🙂
