    There's one other time when you can exceed your brakes' heat capacity, and that's driving down a mountain. Next video idea (not that you'll see this): weight has no effect on braking distance either.

    I commissioned a research project on this in the past. Literally EVERY single manufacturer now uses 3D-injection-molded plastic components for auxiliary parts such as water pumps, thermostat housings, valve covers, etc. Everything that is not the engine or transmission. Subaru, Honda, BMW, Toyota, EVERYONE. The best thing you can do is accept it and plan to refresh these plastic bits at 80k - 100k miles. These companies are not going back to metal components. The days of driving your car 200,000 miles with only oil changes is over. it comes down to cost-savings, emissions (very big deal), and regulatory restrictions (very big deal). Planned obsolescence isn't completely the only explanation.

    My father was a world-class model airplane (free flight) flyer. Many of his planes used engines about the sizes of those shown. They had been internally honed and specially prepared so that while one out of the box might spin at 8-9000 rpm, his were spinning a 12" propeller at 15-17000 rpm. He could release a bright orange plane with a 8 foot wingspan, and within 5 or 6 seconds it would be out of sight (close to 200 mph).

    I know very well how the internal combustion engine works BUT still to this day it blows my mind how the combustion cycle can even still work at high revolutions! You would think eventually the air/fuel mixture and exhaust would just start getting all mixed up with turbulence where nothing worked right or the air couldn't move fast enough, and that the lubrication even works at that rate is amazing, you would think that the top end would just seize up from heat and friction. The modern IC engine really is a mind blowing marvel of modern engineering.

    I work for DAF/Paccar in engine development. A few remarks here. Our diesel engines run with EGR all the time except for cold start below a certain oil temperature so also during full load. Our crankcase ventilation system is open so no oil mixes with the air and our soot deposits are dry and don't cause any clogging issues

    Carbon will and can break without any previous warning. Particular when coming under stress and vibrations. Get your facts.

    why not use a cell peltier for keep at constant temperature (very low, with trimmer you can choice the temp) and put down water and intercoler air ?

    The answer that EVs are attempting to solve (pollution) is definitely not reached by having every rube own an electric vehicle. Rather electric only makes sense if we all collectively adopt (or are mandated) to use mass transit. It might be true that ICE will need to be eventually phased out, but replacing all those ICE with EV does not solve the pollution problem. The real answer is to replace most forms of individual powered-vehicle platforms (inside cities) with mass transit - but how many EV owners would want this?

    So would an electrically assisted turbo/supercharger at low rpm offset higher boost threshold from lower air pressure at low rpm, increasing the likelihood of future factory rear mounted setups?

    Well on the ocassions where the „torque biased” engine won, it would be worth metntioning, that the „power biased” engine lost because it never actually made it’s power or made it only briefly. The „torque biased” engine made more power on average. At the end of the day - only power maters. The confusion comes from the fact that peak power that occurs at a specific RPM value, doesn’t tell how much power the engine makes anywhere else in the rev range.

    I have been reading and watching videos on EGR deletion after having cleaned my EGR and associated pipes about 2 years ago. What a mess! However, I have been undecided until now on whether to go that route or not. based on your excellent, comprehensive, video I have decided not to go the "EGR Delete" route. Reason being was your comment on having to actually reprogram the ECU as the correct running parameters for the engine are based on there being exhaust gasses present on the inlet side. Don't think anyone else has mentioned this, but what you say, is logical, and puts the whole saga into perspective! Thank you for taking the time to explain this! 👏👏

    So "back in the day" if you wanted guarantee something to last you had to over engineer it. Now with computer simulation you can pretty much say how long something will last. Why make a car to last more than 150k miles and 10 years when you can buy a new one. Low emission zones and the amount of tech makes them obsolete earlier.

    Electronically controlled electric valves would be even better. I remember reports about the development of an engine without conventional valves. In other words, no camshaft and no timing belt or timing chain. So no risk of the timing belt breaking and no need to adjust this technology during repairs. I also thought of electrification as an obstacle to series production. It's a shame that such technologies didn't arrive much earlier so that we could still benefit from them. Especially with the current petrol prices (currently around €1.9/$2.0 per litre here). The second thing whose story seems a bit strange is an alleged improvement to the carburettor by a private inventor in the USA, which allegedly led to a Ford Galaxy from the 70s weighing 1.8 tonnes consuming only 2.3l/100km (~102mpg). Yes, that sounds incredibly low, comparable only to modern 4-stroke 50cc carburettor scooters (with indirect injection around ~1.7l/100km). But it was in many TV programmes, scientists and engineers examined the vehicle, found no hidden additional tanks, but due to pressure from the oil industry and a secret patent, the technology is said to have disappeared. All documents were probably also confiscated by the FBI.

    hey D4A, have you heard of julian edgar? he is an ausssie with some thoughts on aerodynamics and suspension. I am most interested in his aero talk and figured you might be too. he talks about optimizing aero flow for intercoolers and airducting and has some affordable techniques for testing it, magnehelics. you mentioned in the video that the air flow to your car leaves less performance head room and he has some ideas about that stuff that are kinda interesting. @driving 4 answers

    If this actually was a feasible engine, but was just lacking sufficient Torque for accelerating from a stop,You could add a flywheel.. You could also incorporate a braking action that restarts the flywheel for the next acceleration phase.

    nitromethane releases more energy per explosion in an engine at the cost of fuel efficiency. so this means you would need more nitromethane to go the same distance than you would in say a gas engine.

    Bigger brakes dissipate heat faster, and stop more consistently. The smaller brakes don't and lose their stopping power when they get too hot. Locking up brakes and triggering ABS on dirt is pointless.

    I have a design that combines the rotary valve and free valve technology. It seems that it will fixes all problems. However I have lost motivation on the project. Maybe in the future I’ll make a video about it.
