Unboxing an original WW2 German GM-30 gasmask

Ойын-сауық

An impromptu unboxing of my long awaited gas mask. Matching, named, and very clean, practically unissued! An in depth video to come on the GM-30.

Was searching the internet for a simple video of an unboxing of this canister to see how the contents were packed. Thank you!

The gm54 is like this but the the rubber is flipped to the outside and the fabric on the inside unlike the gm30

Hi, the number 71 is not the soldier's number, it means that this Gasmask was the 71st issued within the soldier's unit. This number was written in the soldeir's Soldbuch (paybook). The stamp at the bottom of the canister is from the Waffenamt. That's a nice set, with nice original carrying straps and factory paint on the canister, congrats...

I think i found this model of gas mask on a shop, didn't recognize the exact model but it was similar to this, do i have a risk to getting one with asbestos inside the mask or the filter?

It’s probably not the best idea to wear an 80 year old gasmask regardless of what it’s made of. Gm-30s contain no asbestos as far as I know, but the filter threads on the mask can fit any number of wartime or post war filter, which could contain asbestos. It’s impossible to answer the question since I have no picture to look at, you’ll have to positively identify it yourself.

Hey, thanks for sharing! I also have an early war German GM 30 gas mask. Did you smell anything special about your gas mask? Strangely, I smelt a very special smell which I cannot explain what it is like from my gas mask. It's certainly not a strong smell, like cleaning detergent.

To me the only smell I notice is that old rubberized canvas smell with a hint of mold. I'm not sure how they made these but it is pungent!

@@succulentjacob Do you think it's needed to do a cleaning of it thoroughly? Some say we need to be very careful with handling the German gas masks because there might bestill some harmful elements sticking onto the gas mask surface. I only used a sponge with a bit of water to clean the external surface of it.

@@jingshenghong9939 I don’t think it needs to be done. I wouldn’t suggest it just to prevent undue stress on the mask. These masks are 80 and years old now, they don’t hold the same properties as they were when they were new. Functionally as a gas mask, they are most likely useless now just due to the breakdown of the materials in the rubber and canvas. I would suggest doing nothing more than wiping it down once, and once only. I haven’t touched mine. For best results you can store it in a little to no light container with silica packets to prevent any moisture from accumulating. However that isn’t necessary as leaving it in the can is perfectly fine. I suggest if you display it, rotate it in and out of display to prevent and fading and stretching of the mask.

@@succulentjacob okay, thanks a lot for your suggestion! Then I will simply leave the mask inside the canister and put it in my display cabinet.

No, these use a filter with activated charcoal. Probably safe to breathe with, but being as old as it is, I don’t suggest wearing one all day.
