About the gas sheet. The primary purpose of the sheet was protection from blister agents that were being sprayed. Apparently from about the 1930s to the middle of 1950s, it was believed that aerial spraying of blister agents was going to be the primary delivery method for chemical warfare. The idea of the gas sheet is to hide under it while being sprayed. Hopefully keeps most of the agent off of the uniform and web gear. The US Army issued their version at least into the late 1950s.

Interesting. I couldn’t find a lot of information about them but that makes sense.

I’m pretty sure most riflemen ditched the gas mask and used the container to store personal items

Yeah I have heard a lot of people say they were thrown away and there is a lot of evidence of certain units really cracking the whip on soldiers keeping them. So I guess its a 50/50 theory. I definitely would have thrown it out personally. Throwing gas masks away was definitely something US troops did.

@@High-Speed-Historyfrom my understanding the Germans had to pay for their gear or it was military owned equipment so they couldn’t just throw it out, officers would keep track of supplies for inspections, Hitler himself was in a gas attack and suffered the effects, that’s why he made a order for every soldier to carried one, they could use the mask in winter conditions for a face covering/eye protection also , you are a brave man for putting on a old mask with original filter lol, I’ve even helped cleaned up asbestos tiles from a house fire but it’s only bad if you breathe in the dust, I wish I could see the gas cape, I never see pictures of it or videos, but this was cool man, I like collecting , i don’t have a original gas canisters tho but a reproduction, German stuff is expensive in general lol, sorry for the long message

Every piece of German equipment was waffenamt property (hence all those stamps everywhere), and were expected to carry their chemical equipment by regulation. There was I believe a unit leader who managed the maintenance of the units chemical equipment. Not sure how well the guy who decided to ditch his issued, lent property for more self proclaimed rations would go over with the pretty meticulous German army. There 'were' probably exceptions to this, especially maybe later in the war, when regulations really started to go out the window. So, there was prob a few recorded instances of that, and people think they all did it

Actually the German Army was the only army during WWII that actually inspected troops regularly to ensure they had their gas masks with them. There was a gas officer at battalion, and each company had a gas NCO.

The Germans used gas a few times in WW2 (outside of the gas chambers in the concentration camps,) but not against the western powers. The Japanese also did the same. As far as I can find the Allies did not use chemical weapons.
