how should I restore a WW2 German Wehrmacht Gas Mask Tin that has been used for mixing paint? should I just use paint stripper
Wrong title! This is a preservation not a restoration. It is a process that a museum would do to preserve the item as found with no further deterioration . It is the correct procedure. To make it look like new would be the wrong thing to do as it would loose its authenticity. This item looks more authentic as is and as been preserved correctly for posterity.

Surprised that it still have the original paint on, museum class work there! The wax coating as rust inhibitor is also a great idea.
The small compartment in the lid was for storage of spare gas mask glasses by the way.
This cannister was in really good condition before you started. Most I've seen were barely recognizable. Great job!

I was also pleasantly surprised by the state of the cannister. It was so well saved because it was repainted with several layers of paint and was closed. It 's really very rare.
Another excellent job. You used some clever techniques, which I''ll remember. So glad you preserved the original markings. I was afraid you intended to strip the canister and repaint it !!
I have to say I'm a little disappointed. I was hoping for fresh paint, but after reading some of the comments, I can appreciate the preservation work he put into this.
Yay something that isn't boring
You Tube,s smartest restorator !
Great new video! I always learn new restoration techniques from your videos. Keep them coming!
Strange how it's been in the ground for 77 years, but nothing inside it, no remains of a gasmask in it or spare lenses in the lense compartment. Nice job on it.
Really great work. Not many people would have the know-how and patience to do this so well. Nice attention to detail. I’ve seen many videos of WW2 artifacts being dug up and damaged by someone trying to clean it in the field - so wrong.

If I ever want to restore one of these antiques which I know by far how to do it without using this expensive acid to get rid of rust. Simple! drop it in vinegar water and it will dissolve all the rust and wash it off with water after sometime left in the vinegar water. The rust will come back once after you clean it up, to prevent that from happening, use etching primer so the rust won't grow again. If you leave it too long in vinegar water, it will start to dissolve your stahlhelm or whatever antique you have. Tested it before and seen the results. I am a highly motivated person and high morals. I could easily restore 10 german stahlhelms if I want without this acid and scrubbing numerous times, this dude just preserved it from rusting again and keep the value, I could do the same but I go my way 😁😁😁
Oh my🤩 it looks so good now, thx for sharing, please do more 👍👍
Excellent preservation. Very important to halt the rust progression. Very surprised the springs in the hold down clasp were working. Thanks for the excellent video.

It was a pleasant surprise for me, too. This is the first gas mask canister in which the working spring is preserved. This is the best canister dug out of the ground I 've seen. Thank you for supporting my channel.
Good job! In Poland, the generation of our grandfathers kept in such cans grease or worms for fishing ;-) They still were in in perfect condition around the 90's and sometimes in the original Feldgrau painting with German eagles. Dark blue seals - a small "crow", numbers, year of production. Many old people probably still have these cans in their garages and barns.
As always many compliments to you...it also reminds me of my very first restoration! Good old times! I did write to you the private message for the dog tag raffle prize, thank you! ;)
Again very nice work

Thank you so much for not repainting it
More like a preservation than a restoration.
very good! I'm very excited about this work!
I absolutely detest red rust. There is something therapeutic about seeing people remove red rust. On the other hand I love patina. Great videos.
I have two of these will restore them one day
Now almost everything is already dug up by Hitler's treasure hunters with detectors. During the war, the largest battles were fought in Poland. First in 41 Germans went to Moscow and then in 45 Russians to Berlin. Even in the 90s, such finds were often used to "play" war or trade between colleagues ;-) Helmets, cans for gas masks, bullet shells, bayonets from Mauser, cartridge boxes from MG.
I am a ww2 maniac and a reenactor. Thanks for this.
Looks good nice job

very nicely done :))
beautifully done! Still surprises me how much paint you are able to get back again Do you collect them yourself aswell or do you just restore them for fun?
Although if i had a few of these i would try to restore a few but keep 2 original as display peices
If you ever get hold of another gas mask container in similar condition, I hope you fully restore it to “as new” next time 👍
Great job. What a difference.
Not what i was expecting. I thought some sand blasting, a little solder, and repainting with a new leather strap. That would have been nice.
Good Restoration Done 👍 👏 👏

Where did you find those relics?
it had to be in dry ground because it is in good shape
Is that a Luftwaffe one?

You don't know how to fix a dent in a gas tank. there is a small dent on the side and I wanted to somehow align it, but I don’t know how to do it, especially since there is an aluminum insert inside.
Maybe washing it down a bit first would have been better start

No, it 's just a gray feldgrau. Not the correct color rendition. With daytime lighting, you can see that this is the standard gray color of the Wehrmacht.

Always amazes me that all these ground dug gas mask cans never have the mask or extra lenses inside 🤔
@wesleyreese5987

Well if you were a soldier, would you be concerned more about the gas mask, or the canister? You don't find them with masks still in them largely because the canister isn't important.
@thesturm8686
I heard most of the time they just throw away the masks and use it as an extra container, totally against regulation, but in the front lines regulations aren't your top concern

No gas mask in side huh
Also lieber Restaurator wo bist du zuhause, vielleicht in Kiew oder Leningrad?
For some reason every time I watch one of your vids, I wanna go on eBay and buy a relic item. But then I realize most on their are mainly overpriced eaten through metal with no hope

If you found a canister like this and there was no gas mask inside - it means that an airman shat in it and tossed it from an airplane.
