CLEANING ROD VS. STACKING ROD! There seems to be a bit of controversy if the Kar98k has a cleaning rod or a stacking rod. At 2:44 I mention something about the rifles having cleaning rods. Now some rifles use dedicated stacking rods like Berthier's or the MAS-36. Some use a cut in the front sling swivel to do the same job such as SMLE's or the M1 Garand. Some rifles use the cleaning rod in a dual purpose function like Mosin's or Carcano's. The Kar98k falls in the last category. To make a 3 rifle pyramid with the 98k, 2 of the 3 rifles will need cleaning rods. It has a functional, albeit slightly useless cleaning rod, alone just about all its good for is clearing stuck cases. What I believe you're supposed to do is twist two of them together to make one big cleaning rod. You should be using a "chain snake" that comes in a 98k cleaning kit to clean your barrel anyways, it works better and is easier to use than a 20 inch piece of metal. Yeah i have the same thoughts as you on this ''replica'', poor quality in the construction and the materials and it feels quite flimsy, i think they could have done a much better job, and the best thing is that out of all the replicas that ive seen from denix this one is the nicest one lmao, if you see their ak or m16 etc they are just horrific, but if you live in Spain like me you dont have many more choices than this cause deactivated weapons are stupid expensive here, best thing i think is going for airsoft shell ejecting kar98k, even if still isnt very good in quality at least its better than this one ,you have a lot more funcionallity and its a lot cheaper.

Javix 473 Yeah unfortunately when it comes to getting an actual 98k, it’s easier said than done for a lot of people. I would totally go with a solid airsoft Kar98. Not only would the quality sadly be better than a Denix, but you could actually get some use out of it if you play airsoft as well! I’ve been thinking of picking one up myself.

The cleaning rod is removable on the replica. It does however not fit my 1943 original bayonet.

I don't have a denix k98, but i do have a kriegs model, i bought it sight unseen from a mass importer, so you got whatever they sent, & lucky for me i got the kriegs model

Early war does not have a front sight hood, they are normally issued with a snow cap but soldiers always lose them.

If you remove the woodwork from the rifles and soak in hot water it will remove a lot of the dings and dents and clean it brilliantly.

I think the K98K model made by Denix is an okay replica. It gets some stuff right, but other details aren't correct. I think that the price is also a little bit too high. When it comes to Denix models in general, you can really see that they are trying to replicate the look and feel of the real guns, but not the functions. This is also obvious when you look at the materials of these models and what happens to movable pieces when you cycle the action too often. Denix models are a cheap alternative. Deactivated guns can cost a lot of money, and with more regulations coming up, I'd rather have a Denix model with movable pieces than a deactivated gun that has no movable pieces whatsoever. Anyway, great video, I haven't seen too many comparisons between Denix models and the real guns.

@@succulentjacob I put some rubber bands arounds the magazine chamber and put one 8mm cartridge model inside and closed the bolt. Opening the bolt caused the cartridge to get ejected like on a real K98K. I think I might modify the look of my K98K model from Denix. Also, Denix models are perfect when you need good references for object modelling for games.

@@succulentjacob There is one Denix model that is really great though: The MP40 model. It's also made out of Zamak, but it's really robust. It's been a year since I purchased this model and it still works flawlessly, including the sling. It's a lot better than the K98K model.

Yeah I started collecting denix replicas and here's some tips for you the reason why you can't fit ammunition in those guns is they make them that way so that way they can't be converted to real guns that's why they put a plug in them as well I wish I had that car kar98 replica that would look great in my collection could you do denix replicas of a Colt 45 Single Action Army and compare it to the real deal

The fake "cleaning rod" as you called it on the Denix is removable if you simply grab it with a pair of plyers and twist and pull. Its just a spike into the stock... But even after removal a bayonet will not attach as the lug is to wide and the bottom piece to thick to fit a 98K Bayonet. You have to grind it down a small bit to fit. A Dremel too; is more than capable for this work.

I think you and I have different definitions of “removable”. I understand why they didn’t give it a threaded end like actual rifles have or why the bayonet lug is too thicc, it’s a display piece afters all.

I have a real steyr k98 and the triggerhousingblock is cast iron looks like the denix one, just dremel the seamline away on the denix. I think it is a really good replica for the money. here in europe you can pickup a real k98 for 150 euros. Great shooter with a ton of recoil :)

On zib militaria you can get a Denix k98 for 160 bucks, much better deal. Other sellers overprice these guns a lot. Just keep looking and you can find really good deals for these things. I agree, if I had to get one for 250 bucks I would of course not get one. But with that dramatic price change it is much more worth it for someone starting the hobby

You think you can compare an actual Kar98k to the IMA Kar98k?

Perhaps eventually, right now its not feasible for me as I have other things on my plate. Considering I have people asking questions about the IMA one I will try to find out more info on who the maker is for those rifles. Id hate to buy it and find out its one I just did. I'll update soon.

Holy cow, where are you finding K98s for less than $1000 these days? Every single one I’ve seen that wasn’t a Russian capture (they still go for like $700 around here and online) was like $1000-$1200.

It depends really on a lot of stuff, in our case I think it was just dumb luck as we weren't even looking for them. Our rifles are far from museum quality but we still got them dirt cheap. I live in probably the most firearm friendly state in the union so it makes the search and acquisition of firearms in general a lot easier. Online sources will A L W A Y S demand higher prices. Best bet is search every single gun shop in your area once or twice a week. Even check the ones you think aren't going to have a thing, then you can use your judgment from there to determine if its worth going back to or not. I dislike the shop at the one we bought ours at but at the end of the day I'll never have to see these clowns again once I buy it so what do I care. You can try estate sales or garage sales, its worth a shot. I'm in the process of looking for a wartime M1 Carbine. I'm sure you know what kind of demand those call for not to even mention the price tag often associated with them. So that's going to be the same thing Ill do.

is there a way to put the ZF39 scope on top of the rifle? I have to play a German sniper in a short film this June.

Out of the box, the Denix has no ZF scope mounts or cuts. You can drill into the receiver to create a mount, the metal on the Denix is rather soft, nothing like actual rifle steel. But listen to me very carefully. Adapt the rifle to the scope. DO NOT ADAPT THE SCOPE TO THE RIFLE. What do I mean by this? Do all of your modifications to the Denix, NOT to the scope. Original scopes were already uncommon during wartime. Surviving scopes that made it through the war and 80+ years are worth huge amounts of money, but more importantly their historical value. Even if in poor condition DO NOT ALTER THE SCOPE, alter the rifle to accept a scope. You’ll have to get creative.

I think I failed to mention this in the video, but the bolt comes out of the box in one solid piece. After light but repetitive use is when It will separate. In this case, I suggest using JB weld, Gorilla epoxy or some industrial grade epoxy. I don't expect the average superglue to hold. This rifle is mostly a display piece rather than something that should be used, but I don't think it does a very good job at either.

i want to buy one but i want to be able to have the sight hood on it because i like better. do you think if i bought one on ebay i could attach?

You certainly could. It comes with the groove already cut, all you have to do is buy yourself a front sight hood. They should only cost around $10-15 usd. I would slip some glue on the hood when you put it in, it isn’t the most secure on the Denix but it won’t fall off without glue.

I'm considering buying a k98k and I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy from IMA. Are their replicas any good?

Looking at the pictures from IMA it appears to be the same model as the Denix. I’ve noticed some sites that sell these replica weapons all tend to use the same models, as Denix is a dealer and manufacturer but not a seller. If there’s a website offering replicas but they don’t specify who made them, it’s safe to assume it’s a Denix.

I completely disassembled the thing at one point and the barrel stops about halfway into the handguard. The front of the barrel is heavier than the other end which causes it to droop slightly. This can be fixed but all Denix K98s will do this.

Is ur mid war k98 all matching?

Mine does not all match. Typical of Russian capture rifles all, in my case most, parts are different. What the Russians did was they would have a batch of rifles, completely random 98k’s, completely stripped down every component and cleaned every part. Some could have had their steel refinished and original markings ground off. The things that indicate it’s a Russian capture are the little x on the top of the receiver the Soviets placed to indicate a captured weapon that went through arsenal refit. Also a really shitty lacquer on the stock, and a stamped serial number on the stock. Mine has not had its steel refinished, or had any of its waffenamts defaced, and has a few matching parts, which is amazing considering the scale in which they did things. Most likely a time saving measure they took. But it does have the small x, stock number and the awful lacquer they put on, which I have since removed.

It depends on your units authenticity standards. In general, as a starter yes it works, but you'll find after handling original rifles that (in the United States, cant speak for other countries) getting an actual rifle is the way to go. It works well for photo shoots, as a loaner weapon or just starting out. Before you buy one however, go to gunshops in your area and spend just a little extra and get a real one. Think about it this way, $200 for a fake rifle with limited functionality or $400 for a real one with full functionality.

Whip that out in a police stand off and you would get shot. Believe it or not, those are banned in Canada yet I can possess a deactivated rifle with no permit or an operational one with a permit but not a non-functioning replica. Stupid regulations.

There are no scope mounts on the Denix. The only sights it has are the irons, which are fixed at 100m. In the video I may have failed to mention this, but my friends early war 98k actually has the mounting holes for (what I believe is) a ZF-39 side scope variant. You will have to do some extensive modifications if you want to attach a ZF-39 or 41 and so on. Its more work than its worth if you ask me.

@@JulianMMorris I think I know, If it’s directly over the bolt then you will need to create some sort of mounting surface. If you want a scope to replace the original irons then you’ll have to remove the rear iron sight ladder, then you can place your mounting surface of choice. If it’s just for kicks, Amazon sells picatinny rails. You can either epoxy those down or screw them in. If you want an authentic look you’ll have to look up German scopes, unfortunately I can’t help you there I don’t know enough about them.

Your buddy’s k98 is probably missing the cleaning rod Bc it’s a duffel cut rifle most of those don’t have them.

could you convert it to a real firing gun? for educational purposes

It would not be possible. It has no actual barrel, even if they had one I would trust none of the metal components on this 'rifle" (bolt, breach, etc.) to bear any type of pressure, even blanks. The only real reusable part of this rifle that could be used would be the stock after a bit of filing down. But at that point/price, you can purchase a 98k stock and save yourself the headache. I would deem this stock exceptional for an airsoft gun, but not as a replacement for an original.

The amount of pressure that the 8x57mm cartridge produces is immense. It would blow up the replica in your face. That tin metal doesn't have the proper tolerance for such power.

No... There is no functional firing mechanism, no extraction, and the bottom magazine does not allow rounds to be added. Also there is no chamber or barrel, nor does the trigger actually make anything move in the bolt... And to top it off the pot metal material would never survive the pressure of firing at all. It would explode in your hands and you would be in a very bad way.

Not easily. Your best bet is reusing the stock and putting the internals of an airsoft gun in it. I’ve thought about doing it my self with one of my airsoft guns for shits n giggles.

@@vintagevegas9067 Off the top of my head We-Tech makes an m16a1 thats gas blow back. Last time I looked it was ~$300. CYMA might but im not 100% on that. My M16s are made by JG, crap externals but the internals are amazing, they shoot like a lazer and they're still bone stock. If you can get yourself a Classic Army M16a1, it may not be blowback, but they are the best of the bunch for roughly the same price of a JG($200).

Initially I didn't plan on buying the one I have now, a friend pointed it out at a gun shop and It was cheap and I had just gotten paid that day so the deed had to be done. Needs a little TLC, but that's the fun!

Typical Denix, but with work they make decent wall hangers or props

I bought one of these and it's the biggest waste if 300 dollars. But I think they made it to go on a manokin in like a collection buy an actual one it's way better

02:44 contary to popular belief: these are NO cleaning rods. They are not intended for cleaning, but for setting up rifle pyramids. So just for aesthetic reasons.

Very bad quality...Some cheap pot-metal. I have real WW2 guns, but one time I bought a Denix MP-41 replica because an original is way too expensive. It fell apart after just a few weeks. Ridiculous.

What I would expect from a replica toy . Waste of money

It's stupid to compare real german ww2 rifle with cheap spanish replika,try yourself to make replika rifle in a range of 200€

I compared these because the Denix 98k is the only reproduction of a 98k out there. It carries a hefty price tag which is why I decided to see if its up to snuff. A lot of reenactors who see this as an alternative, don't know the differences between an actual Kar98k and this replica. The purpose of this video is to show the differences so you think hard about what you're buying. And I myself don't have a need to make a replica. I own the actual thing. Making one yourself with all handmade parts, no originals, would be incredibly time consuming, expensive and not yield anything better than what Denix makes right now.
