Fantastic video! I never knew that they did that, I always thought they just did the over-the-chest and the strapped-to-the-gas-mask-canister methods. I'll try this out once my gas mask bag arrives.

The ways of attaching the gas cape pouch are endless when you go into detail, and depend a lot from date to date. Best is to try a few different ways and find a way you like.

I own 6 original gas masks with complete sets of straps, so..Yeah, those gas mask straps are pretty nice. The material is closer to the tropical / late war style of webbing, but still correct and WAY BETTER than post war. Original straps come in a variety of colors , weaves and materials, most of them being made of a vegetable fiber or jute type of material or rayon or a mixture of all. They’re somewhat fragile and thin and tend to unravel and tear with constant use and exposure to weather. One really good aspect of proper reproductions is they’re better made and more durable than originals. I personally use original straps for my impression simply because there WAS a lack of good reproductions.. and postwar ones are noticeably different in color and weave. Excellent video… I was actually thinking about doing a similar video but you beat me to it !! Lol

That's really cool! These days there are good repro's but I can't immagine having to use originals because post war ones suck 😅

@@dergrenadier You’re absolutely right ! I’ve been reenacting since 1997 and up until recently, your only option was original straps or lime green West German ones, so I’ve just been in the habit of using the real thing…same situation with tropical / late webbing, I just went with original because the so called reproductions at the time looked like chunky , thick British webbing , NOTHING like the real thing. …on a side note, I have a couple of those original gas mask straps that have the strangest filler pulp or material “ extender “ …. It seriously looks like strands of wood fiber or dried grass woven into the webbing and that’s probably EXACTLY what it is. I’m pretty certain there’s a moderate percentage of recycled textiles and plant pulp. They really didn’t waste ANYTHING and had to adapt however they could.
