I'm pretty sure I'm never going to do this puzzle again, but it's such a unique puzzle that it's still a keeper in my collection 🤩. I just love a puzzle with a gimmick. What is the craziest gimmick you have seen in a puzzle?
Well, hello. I am 77 and I grew up doing puzzles. I found you in an ad after watching Claire's vlog of her cats. I have been following her since Covid, 2020, when I discovered all the different fun things on KZread. Somewhere in the 1980s I stopped doing puzzles as I didn't have room and my roommate didn't care for them. Last year, I rediscovered puzzles through an ad on Amazon with cats and books. (Reading is my lifelong passion. I learned to read at 3 years old.) I now live alone and will have more room in September in my studio apartment. I have started collecting already and was surprised to find that they now have numbers on the back and are divided into four squares. You can actually do them from the back or flip over to see if you are in the right square. Well, I did too, in the old days but they were solid green! Now-a-days people want things easy. In the late 60s, during the Andy Warhol Op Art period, I put together a solid red round puzzle and another round one that just looked like a black and white target. I did a glass apple on a two-toned red background...one piece missing. And the round window in Notre Dame (which did not burn). I, always did difficult ones. I did find a puzzle that was another passion of mine. There was a crossword puzzle on the back of the box. I solved that and then the puzzle, which was the answer, of course. I preferred Springbok because of the thickness of the pieces. Then I used regular glue and put them on poster board and hung them on the walls. I have purchased cats mixed with books and psychedelic puzzles to put together. I discovered trays and other puzzle helpers. Never had those things in my day. Not even helpers, just the picture on the front of the box. I am excited to get started. I have never had a direct method other than putting the edges together first. Then I just eyed it. In the last building I lived in, we had a puzzle room. They were all landscapes and I stay away from those as they do not appeal to me. Like art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I used to wander into the room, usually when no one was there or there was one person and stand opposite looking at it upside-down. All the puzzles were for everyone and people wandered in and out. I would just stand there with my hands behind my back and stare. Then I would pick up a piece and put it in. A talent? Born with it? I don't know. But people would say, "Oh, no. Here she comes!" And laugh. Usually, the pieces I found, going from puzzle to puzzle, were the 'one' piece no one else could find but I didn't know that until they would say, "I have been looking for that one for two days! SHE walks in, picks it up, and puts it in! How does she do that?" I would just leave with a smug smile. (No problems, they were my friends and neighbors...except in the puzzle room!) I loved the puzzle in this vlog! I would have bought it as soon as I saw it back in the 90s. When I couldn't do puzzles, I stopped looking at the boxes so as not to depress myself. Once I figured out the edges, I would be okay. And, yes, my first thought was to do the blue part first. You did a wonderful job. I will be back if I didn't just bore the daylights out of you. Thank you.

Thank you for the comment, it wasn't boring at all 🤗. Reading is also a passion of mine, though puzzles does seem to have taken over a bit 😆. I would love to try a vintage Springbok puzzle 🤩. I have only heard great things about them, and they have some really cool images, but I don't think they were ever sold in Denmark, I have never seen one, new or used 😔. If you haven’t already seen Karen Puzzles youtube channel you really should, she buys a lot of vintage Springbok puzzles 😊. (Sorry for the very late reply. I have been on complete vacation mode for the last few weeks, and are only now starting to come out of it 😉)
youtube just randomly suggested me this video, and it's on such a cool topic!
That was awesome👏👏. A different type of puzzle challenge. Thanks for sharing.

That illustration is so cute. It looks like fun. I'd do one like that. Penguins don't scare me, LOL.
This puzzle looks way too difficult for me! Glad to see puzzle videos from someone besides "Karen Puzzles"

It's definitely a puzzle that requires a lot of patience 😆 Thank you 😊. I love Karen Puzzles, but there are actually a lot of other great puzzle youtubers out there. If you need recommendations I will be happy to give you some 😊 (Sorry for the very late reply. I have been on complete vacation mode for the last few weeks, and are only now starting to come out of it 😉)
The image was really cute, especially the penguin reading the newspaper. The only gimmpuzzle I’ve ever done was a two sided puzzle. One side was the exterior of a house. The other side was the dollhouse interior. It was fun, but not much of a challenge.

It's such a cute puzzle image 😍. Double sided puzzles are also really fun 😁.
I really enjoyed this video! It's so well put together, and you're very good with the camera. Karen Puzzles does a lot of the more gimmicky puzzles, and I think the wildest ones I've seen her do were either the miniscule 500 piece $600 puzzle made of metal that you had to do on black velvet with forceps (it was only around 5 inches across complete, but it was so pretty 😵💫), or the 2 sided, top-and-bottom cut puzzle of 9 sudoku, where every piece was the same shape, and when they flipped it over to cut it again (so that you can't tell the top from the bottom), they rotated it one quarter turn 💀 I loved watching your method here, subscribing 😊

Thank you so much 😁. Karen Puzzles have so many puzzles I would love to own 🤩. The mini metal puzzles are amazing, I just don't think I could ever make myself spend that kind of money on one puzzle 😆

@@a_puzzling_lamb oh, same here 😂
Nice job! You are much braver than I am to do a puzzle like this.
Puzzles I have with "gimmicks" - (1) "Sassy Lara" by artist Lowell Herrero (painted in 1997), puzzle by Ceaco, Inc. (1999)(Cat peeking out through venetian blinds) - 500 interlocking pieces all in the shape of cats' tails ! (all are "curly" shaped); and, (2) Hallmark's "Contented Cat", 500 pieces, date unknown (beautiful calico cat with gorgeous flowers) - the pieces are covered with fabric (fabric pieces) - has a wonderful feel and the fabric-look gives a soft, gentle appearance - - so perfect to the image.

I just quickly googled the puzzles, the Sassy Lara looks very interesting, I will definitely keep my eye out for that one (though the chances are small, I don't think Ceaco have ever really been sold here in Denmark 😔). I couldn't find the other one just now, but a fabric covered puzzles sounds very fun 🤯😁 And thank you so much for all of your comments, and sorry it has taken me so long to reply 🤗🙈
Love all the Penguins especially the one reading a trashy novel (my label) while eating a sandwich 😂. Thanks for a well made video. 🫶

There are so many of the penguins I can relate to, but I think I would probably be the one hiding from the sun under a beach umbrella putting on sunscreen 😆
I hadn’t gotten to the end yet haha, love the earrings
Great videography! I loved how you kept continuity by finding the missing pieces from the water and putting them in.
I'd love to know how long this puzzle took you? You could consider having a timer clock that you start and pause continually until the puzzle is complete :)

Yes, I thought about that after I finished it 😆. I'm not used to timing myself while puzzling, but I will try to remember it for future videos 😁.
I love this kind of puzzle, lots of repeating details. I think I would have used the same strategies as you did. I was pleased to see there were some interlocking pieces on the edges. I have 3 gimmicky puzzles, a round blue puzzle with a red line one piece from the edge, a mylar hexagon star puzzle called prismagic (you need sunglasses to do it) and a repeating detail cat puzzle that you color.
Yes, I would love to find one of those puzzles and put it together.
cool stuff!
Nice gimmick. I think I would have preferred to do the other one. There were too many penguins 😂

The other one would definitely have been much easier 😆
The puzzle piece design was neat but I don't think I would be able to put together a puzzle with that type of image. Way too busy for me. I don't like super large areas of color or textures but I do prefer some so I can sort out different sections. Puzzle images that are busy like that, for me, would limit the amount of sorted sections I would have and I think with my short attention span, I would quickly get overwhelmed with the puzzle. Nice video, btw. :)

Thank you 😁. I definitely don't blame you for not wanting to do this puzzle 😉. Doing such a difficult puzzle is not something I do everyday, and if it wasn't because I wanted to make this video, I probably would have had this puzzle in my to-do pile for much longer before I had gotten the courage to do it 😊
Hi! I have this puzzle in my collection too (and the one with cats) 😊 I also built it and I find it exceptionally challenging but also beautiful. The image is just so cute! I fell in love with it. I haven't done the cat one yet, but I also think it's the easier of the two. The penguin one was pretty tiresome to piece together. I did basically the same as you. First, built the water pieces. Then, I would pick up a random piece and search for it on the image, and then just put it where it should go... That took a lot of time, but, I had no idea how otherwise to tackle this puzzle. It was worth it, though. It's one of the most interesting puzzles I've built. Also, you can take such cool photos of this puzzle 😉I had a lot of fun with it. I really enjoyed your video. I'm looking forward to seeing more such fun content on your channel. Marta (@marta.puzzles)

Hi, i actually done that jigsaw when it first came out and can remember it being fun, nice to see it again. P.s. i like your presentation, informative and concise, keep it up!

Did this puzzle over 35years ago. Why would they show you the correct pieces cut? It would give you the answer of how to put it together

It's so cool to hear from people who have done this puzzle 😁. Do you remember what you thought about it back then and whether you enjoyed it? I definitely didn't expected the cut to be exactly like on the box (though I have seen puzzles that have done that for some reason), it was more the fact that the cut was a completely different kind from what was on the box (ribbon instead of random cut) 😊. (Sorry for the very late reply. I have been on complete vacation mode for the last few weeks, and are only now starting to come out of it 😉)

@@a_puzzling_lambdon't let it stop you from making videos, but I agree sound was a weakness. A better mic should help. Much of the time it sounded unnatural, probably too compressed, lacking higher frequency. But it was also uneven, and first impression may turn some viewers away. My gripe was the first seconds. I felt the lip sync was off and that's quite annoying. It got better and I got used to it, but do look out for delays (perhaps introduced from editing or from having wireless mic). Allow me to question the music choice at 15.55 as well. It was abrupt and had no melody. A more relaxing music goes better with puzzling for me. Sorry for the criticism, just trying to help. The video was otherwise nice! Greetings from Sweden. I think I guessed your country right. :-)
