You won’t believe what I found at this estate sale…

Today's video is the story of an estate sale auction with a mountain of vintage jigsaw puzzles that I was hoping I could get for super cheap. Well...that's not quite how it went down.

Unfortunately, it’s probably someone whos just reselling on ebay or to make a buck. I find the ppl who come earliest to garage sales and can spend the most money at auctions are doing it because it’s their livelihood. It sucks for ppl like us who just want to find a treasure for cheap sometimes. But i encourage you to keep looking!

It is possible that after seeing the puzzles were worth something you could have been bidding against a family member who wanted them to go on eBay instead. Hence why no one turned up and you heard nothing.

You should go to a library book sale. You'll see a lot of people with handheld scanners scanning every books ISBN code. The scanners are linked to a buyers database, and the person at the library doesn't even know the title of the books they purchase.

It's a good way to get rid of stuff. I know a guy who buys all sorts of old things like washing machines, furniture, anything that's still useful, even if it needs repair. I've called him a few times and I usually make a "package" for him including useful and useless stuff, for a good price (or sometimes even for free), on the condition that he must take everything. All or nothing. Especially big, heavy things. I live on a 12th floor and there are things which don't fit in the elevator, and it's great to have someone just take them. Karen mentioned that they _had_ to take everything in the lot, so I suspect that's their motivation, not so much the price.

@@gorgonzola86 😲Working VCRs are worth good money actually (same for CRTs, though mainly smaller ones that are more portable). 🙂 Perfect for Karen's collection of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen tapes (just kidding). Actually perfect for old home movies or old commercials (the parts we would cut out when making a bootleg tape from TV, but actually the more rare and interesting part now). That reminds me that I need to either fix my Panasonic VCR or get one that works... I do have a couple of working Sony Trinitrons to use them with though for that period correct experience! 🙂 It's popular to use CRTs for period-correct retro video gaming.

The Melissa and Doug solar system floor puzzle is a really great donation to a women and children center or a children's hospital. Since the pieces can typically be sanitized fairly easily it's a nice fun thing for little kids to do to keep their mind busy. You could also look for a elementary teacher who might have a use for it.

Just some auction tip.. it's best not to bid at all until the last little bit. Wait until closest to the time that it will reset to. Don't put your max bid in until the last few minutes. It drives the cost up too fast. The only time I use the max bid feature is if I can't be there for the end time, or I really want an item and I can't be completely invested during the time it ends. None of the auctions I bid on have an exact ending time, or the max bid feature would be more appealing to me in those cases. Some auctions if you put a penny above what the bid increments are in your max bid, you can possibly outbid a person that way. In the time I've typed this I've been outbid on a bunch of things that I put a five cent bid on just for fun lol. Sometimes you snag them and sometimes you don't. It sounds like you're already factoring in the buyers fees and whatnot, so that's awesome. That prismatic puzzle looks cool. I put some wooden puzzles on my watch list that look really neat, I hope that I can win them for cheap!

I collect playing cards and games of all types (board, card, video, you name it), but one of my less-discussed favorite things is books _about_ games. I was searching far and wide for a good copy of _Scarne's Encyclopedia of Games_ for many years, and I didn't find one in perfect condition until recently... from _Scarne's widow's estate sale_ , bless her memory (their family tragedies are too painful for a KZread comment to do justice to, full credit to her for enduring so long and keeping the torch alive). I don't just have _Scarne's Encyclopedia of Games_ now, I have *Scarne's* _Scarne's Encyclopedia of Games_ . Along with his personal copy of several of his other books. It was not a bargain, but it's something I find personally rewarding, and I'd like to think he'd have appreciated someone enamored of his work since childhood stewarding them. (I actually kind of wish they weren't in such good shape, like he'd written something in a margin somewhere, but they're all pristine.) I've taken to collecting the several games he'd published as well - just bought another one today, in fact. Looking forward to the prismatic solve!

I collect LPs, and I was thinking, "I don't really do anything wacky to get them" 🤔 but I have actually breathed in a lot of dust, carried full crates several blocks home, spent hours digging through boxes at thrift shops. Once, though, I was at a used bookstore that had a very small collection of records for sale. It wasn't their main business and it was clear from the pricing that they didn't know too much about the market. My hands were shaking as I brought an excellent condition copy of The Smiths *Hatful of Hollow* to the counter and bought it for under $20. I was scared that the cashier would look at it and realize that it was worth 5 times that amount!

I don't collect anything as dramatic as the Prismatic puzzle, but I do have an almost complete collection of Agatha Christie Fontana paperbacks, with cover paintings by Tom Adams, from the 1960s & 70s. The most dramatic thing I've ever done to get one is to ring a second hand bookshop & ask them to post a few to me, after I saw (& bought) some on holiday. I have them catalogued into three collections; poor quality copies that are fine for reading or lending, & better copies as back ups to the jewels of the collection; the near-pristine ones. It was so exciting completing the collection, & I suppose it's not really finished until I have a full set of pristine copies, but as they became harder & harder to find, I became satisfied with the 200+ books that I have!

I started figure collecting recently and one of the holiest of holy grails is the Maka from soul eater figure. It shows up for sale maybe once or twice a year, even rarer still for it to be either new or intact since it's from 2014 and the material used was pretty fragile. usually goes for anywhere between $750 - $1000+ depending on the condition. .... I found it in a local shop's warehouse clearance listing for $80. New and never opened.

I'm sure the previous owner of your puzzles would have been happy to see them go to someone who's as passionate about them as you. I hope my keyboards find a good home too. In the process of Konmar'ing my place, I've already sold off a few vintage-ish video games and consoles. Just had to check you out. AND I just love your channel! So far this is my absolute favorite video of yours. The combination of puzzles, your enthusiasm and excitement, and finally the almost best thing, the online auctions. I am myself a happy online auctionist since about 10 years back. However not for puzzles so far, more for vintage design items, furniture and art. But I will definitely start bidding on nice puzzles now. Anyway, I loved every second of this video. I felt I was totally there with you at every moment. As excited and thrilled as you during the last moments of the auctions. So happy for you for what you got in the end. Such nice puzzles!!! Then going to pick up the things at the real estate place. So exciting to see them for real and not the least to be sneaking at the other stuff. And then waiting there for the other auktionists. It could as well have been myself going through ALL of it. I sense we are very much alike in personality in many ways. Lots of love M

For the giant puzzle, you should maybe try repurposing the pieces! Coat them in resin and use them as coasters, turn them into light switch covers, cut them in half and use them as bookmarks. Wouldn't work with tiny pieces, but you can be creative with the bigger ones! At least the ones that are pretty :)

I collect postcards that are handwritten and stamped (not sent in envelope). My goal is to collect at least one from each country and one from each state . I didn't do anything crazy so far. I got in touch with a soldier to get a postcard from South Sudan. Sad story, i did manage to get it but somewhere on the way someone ripped the stamp.

My wife bought a classical harp at an auction house in downtown Los Angeles about 30 years ago. She knew the family that ran the auction house and they knew she liked harps so they invited her to attend an auction with a beautiful harp. This particular harp was from a reputable luthier (name forgotten) that caters to professional musicians. Today the harp would be worth about $2000. She was able to get the harp for $200! Today, the harp is in her cousins house and whenever he has musical guests, they have been known to sit and play the harp.

I think my channel may have had something to do with that, because there are some puzzles I got super cheap early on that are now going for $100+. Also during the pandemic a lot more people got a lot more interested in puzzles!

I also bid on a Limited edition Coca Cola Christmas star which I paid $250 for. I love both items to me it was worth it. I used the door knob as a hook on the wall in my coca cola powder room. I of course have a coca cola christmas tree every year and the star adorns the top.

I actually collect (amongst other things) off air VHS (and other formats) tapes! I actually wouldn't mind digitizing those tapes, a lot of that stuff is just completely unavailable to watch anywhere at this point. The wildest thing I've ever done is excavate a custom-built rack enclosure for a 1960s black and white video tape recorder from Sony and about 100 11 inch reels of 1/2" tape from a basement, it took multiple trips and the rack barely fit in my car!

*prismatic* I collect instruments, particularly pedal organs :) when i was 16, i was on a road trip through the northern states to get to minnesota (im from oregon myself). We stopped at every antique store we could find along the way, and found lots of cool things, but by far my favourite find was a beautiful pedal organ built by the beckwith organ company in chicago. The only issue being that there was no way in heck it was going to fit in the little prius we had at the time. Later that summer, My grandpa surprised me, and had bought the organ, and set up his van to long haul all the way back to Minnesota to pick it up! It was really cool to get to spend time with him on the road, and was by far the craziest collection of an item ive ever experienced 😅

Auction lots can be fun. I bought a set of shelving from an "estate sale" from a dead computer-hardware startup, and it came with everything they'd left on the shelves. It turned out to be a bunch of random junk, a couple of dozen plastic boxes that turned out to be quite useful, two old iPads, and dozens of small pneumatic valves that seem to list for around $300 new and were custom-made with no specifications listed so I have no idea whether there's any resale market for them at all.

I collect enamel pins and a while back there was a pin on Etsy that I really wanted. If I remember correctly the pin was $10, but the it was being shipped internationally. So the cost for shipping I think was $15. I ended up paying more in shipping than the cost of the pin. On a positive note, it is still one of favorite enamel pins. So I think it was worth it.😊

I have been watching your videos with great interest and enjoyment. This one, though, I'm extremely grateful for. During your segment in the house, you showed a puzzle in the cupboard next to your lot and named it. I had that puzzle in the early 70s, but lost it in a move. I have often thought of it over the decades, but with no information on it, I couldn't do much about it. Now, thanks to you, I'm the thrilled owner of a Yellow Flash and am happily occupied putting it together. Thank you so much for your sharing of your puzzle enjoyment that has reunited me with a puzzle I had lost.

Hi Karen. I got the 2000-piece wood puzzle from Wooden City. It was $89 plus $25 to ship Fed-Ex from the UK ($114 total). It has a lot of neat, shaped pieces in it including animals and transportation vehicles like a moped, antique car and jet. The neat thing about this puzzle is the back side of the puzzle is a 2-color design (which they don't show you). I was lucky that the puzzle was shipped from the UK, because Wooden City is in the Ukraine, and I don't think there are any UPS or Fed-Ex service going out. Great haul on your new puzzles.

I also get the whole bid war thing, it gets you excited and it's hard to give up, I've done that for one of the tamas. I ended up getting it cheaper than ebay prices though, but still much more than I was hoping to pay, on my last bid I was actually regretting u3t and hoping to be outbid haha (they are much more expensive than puzzles, I've paid 200 euros for some of mine and that's concidered a bargain compared to ebay). the Prismatic puzzle is absolutely gorgeous! it's a shame you couldn't get that other lot, but maybe you'll find them! I collect animal and fantasy figurines - started with Sleich, but then branched out to a variety of other brands. not really any rhyme or reason to it, honestly, it's just aesthetic. I don't have that many crazy stories since I get most of my figurines at stores or markets, but there's a few items that have kinda interesting stories: - Sleich Bayala misprinted toy - this one showed up at my favorite toy store and sat there presumably for months as I didn't pick it up the first time I saw it. I saw it again when I came back a few months later, but couldn't pick it up at that time either, so I promised myself if it was still there next time I'd get it. and wouldn't you know it, it never sold, so the next time I was there I picked it up. (side note; that same store is also my go-to for Sleich toys that aren't being produced anymore, since they keep old stock and sell at a discount. unfortunately the owner is retiring so I may have to find another place to get my Sleich...) - TY plushie Y Ddraig Goch - I don't really collect TY plushies but I like that each of them has a name and a little rhyme on their tag, and occasionally a really cute one pops up to tempt me. this summer I was in Wales and on one of the first days I spotted a TY Y Ddraig Goch (literally: The Red Dragon; the dragon on the Welsh flag) in a souvenir store. I didn't get it, though, and I regretted that decision. I figured I would see it again but didn't see it at all over nearly two weeks, until the very last day we were in Wales, when we happened to spot it at a tourist information/souvenir store. my mom and I had literally been on the lookout for it for a full week at that point! - Pokemon Spectrier & Glastrier plushies - did you know the official Pokemon Center doesn't ship to Europe? I had been keeping an eye out for these ever since the Crown Tundra DLC was released bc I knew they'd be made eventually, but when they were, I found out I couldn't order them directly. I had to get them from a reseller on Ebay, which I usually don't like doing bc I like to support the official stores. and a funny side note; I once saw a really neat fandom themed board game at a convention but it was like 100 euros (highest I'm willing to go for that stuff is 70 including shipping costs). came home, went online, found it at 65 euros including shipping. silly convention stand, forgetting the internet exists...
