TRUE CRIME PLAYLIST: • True Crime Body Language
The House Ethics Committee has opened an investigation into Rep. George Santos (R-NY) that will focus on allegations of misconduct and campaign finance violations-a probe that comes as the embattled freshman congressman is embroiled in a ballooning scandal surrounding these alleged lies and more:
If Santos resigned or was ejected from Congress (a process that requires a vote of two-thirds of its members), New York Gov. Kathy Hochul would call a special election to replace him. Santos’ removal could be a blow to Republicans, who regained control of the House with a slim four-seat majority after flipping multiple districts previously held by Democrats, including New York’s third congressional district Santos now represents. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), however, has said Santos will be removed from Congress if the Ethics process finds him guilty of wrongdoing.

I agree. In my state, many of the state job positions include various types of testing - psych, medical, polygraph, job knowledge as well as being fingerprinted for a background check. It's astounding that none of this is required for political candidates running for office, nor for the people they appoint to gov't positions, once they are voted into a position.

For 3 decades, I had a rolling federal background check to fly non-military, chartered flights for various members of the Senate and the House and their aides. The reason we have no official protocol for doing background checks on political candidates is it's been assumed that the press would uncover anything sordid. Unfortunately, McCarthy and other GOP House members were made aware of Santos 5 months before the election but chose to ignore it. As long as there is no accountability, there's no incentive for candidates to do anything differently.

My ex-husband lied for sport. When there was no need to lie, he would lie. He would lie about the most menial of things, like a bus journey he was on to get home. He would tell a whopper of a story about some incident he witnessed with passengers, the driver etc. Then I'd meet someone who had been on the same bus and I'd mention something around what apparently happened and they'd tell me nothing happened, it was an ordinary bus journey. I got exhausted calling out the lies, I eventually couldn't believe anything he said. Divorce ensued, thankfully. I got out with my sanity intact.

I noticed that Chase's taking action was not only a heartwarming example of right- action, it was also action done with total class. I've re watched this one a few times, and I'm struck by the way that the information was given to us. There was *no* hint of what was to come. If there is a more humble way to let a concerned channel know that right- action has been taken, I can't think of any. Chase knew all through this episode that he had personally taken responsibility for setting this right, yet in no way shape or form did he let on that he had done so, until the last possible moment after speaking with Disabled Navy veteran Richard Osthoff. I am very sure that if it hadn't been necessary that we know, we would not have had any idea that Chase had acted with nobility and enduring loyalty to aid his brother in service. Chase Hughes, your taking responsibility is heartwarming. Your humility in letting us know help had been established, is exemplary. You lead by example. Please let us know where we can best contribute. Thank you.

They *do* have personality: I can't help but smile when Scott refers to someone as " this cat...(etc.)" I was rolling on the floor when Chase described 'interrogating' his kids using the punishment question, to determine which had spilled a unit-sized box of chocolate milk on the (formerly) white carpet, beginning with 'interrogator' 101: immediately sending one child off to the kitchen, then just asking them each the one question. Respectful word of advice, little ones: Daddy's one of the world's top interrogators. Tell him right off if milk gets spilled. Greg looks mighty comfy miming open carrying a rifle casually across his shoulders. I'm glad I didn't grow up in that neighborhood. Mark, your indicators are stellar. You've made presentation into an art form. Thanks for the education, thanks for the entertainment, thanks for reminding me Prime has Columbo for free just now.
