Gilgo Beach murders: Architect charged in Long Island serial killer case. An architect has been charged over the deaths of three out of up to 11 victims in the Gilgo Beach murders in New York state over a decade ago. Rex Heuermann, 59, is charged with killing Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. He is suspected in a fourth woman's death. On Friday the married Long Island father pleaded not guilty. Detectives say they matched DNA from pizza that the suspect ate to genetic material found on the women's remains. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told a news conference on Friday: "Rex Heuermann is a demon that walks among us - a predator that ruined families."
In this video, we'll be discussing the Gilgo Beach Murders, and how Rex Heuermann, the suspect, might have been involved. If you're interested in crime analysis or behavioral analysis, then this is a video you don't want to miss! My dad is a narcissist and to avoid confrontation and him criticizing me and hurting me, I become overly agreeable. If he feels threatened he will defend and by proxy, attack. So I have to put him at ease and make sure he knows I’m on his side and he is smart and funny and right. So I laugh and just tell him he’s funny and right. Similarly to the interviewer. Not saying he was consciously making those choices here, but I could see myself in a similar situation.

I knew a serial killer. My friend and neighbor introduced me to him and he came by my apartment several times for coffee and danish/donuts. He invited me to go somewhere, my boyfriend was invited as well, but something happened to me when he arrived that day that saved my life. I opened the door and I literally lost my breathe, like it was sucked out of me and i said, without thinking, "I changed my mind!" and slammed the door. I don't know what happened in that moment. Perhaps i read his body language or something at a more subtle energy made me aware. He murdered probably 25 or more people, two of my friends. I'm very fortunate and always tell others to listen to their instincts about people.

In NYC, the interviewer would be considered "a bit much" ... but the supplicating behavior can be seen in some parts of the culture. The overly laughing thing is for him a way of communicating "You are a wonderful 'raconteur', and your jokes are very funny indeed!" Thank you Mark for the phrase "florid raconteur". As fun as that is ... Rex either thinks he is, or wants to be this great "raconteur" ... and the interviewer is acting like: "Yes! You are! Oh, this is just wonderful!" The Interview is very odd, that he speaks about his Hammer and it does sound very murderous. My blood runs cold whenever I see Rodney Alcala’s face! I grew up in 70’s California and one day while walking to the store with friends, I was stopped by a guy that told me that he, “was an art student at Cal State Hayward and needed to take portrait photos for his photography class and could he take mine?” Obviously I had no idea until years later that I made a lucky escape from the “Dating Game Killer.” There were so many elements of our meeting that I always assumed were coincidence until I listened to the podcast about him. Not one element was coincidence. Not one. Blood. Chilling.

Glad you escaped! Had my own not as scary but definitely creepy interaction with Alcala. Figure drawing class at UCIrvine, '70ish. In walks the model, fit guy, big hair, wearing a black G string. up until then, models were fully nude. The black G string just looked like a big black arrow: "look at me!" Was actually more uncomfortable than full nudity, with his preening attitude. During the break, he sidled up and engaged males in the class (thankfully), but his whole demeanor was much like the Dating Game video. Recognized him right away when he was arrested and his picture was in the OC Register Paper. Glad I wasn't on that jury. What a creep.

Oh wow, @soowzy that actually does sound traumatizing. It’s interesting that he chose to wear the black G string, and would probably make for interesting psychological analysis… obviously nothing to do with modesty, likely all about power. (Unless he was “masking” a source of shame or inferiority. Hmmm…) 😆 My dad was a professional photographer and I had actually just gotten into big trouble for “ducking the camera” when he went to take a candid shot of me just a few weeks before I ran into Alcala. It helped to create the perfect storm. I actually called the FBI case agent after seeing the story on 48 hours or 20/20 to enquire about the area that I lived and if they could verify that it was within his hunting ground and was told, “absolutely.” I would really like to go and volunteer to help scan and post the thousands of photos that RA took during his reign of terror. I think it would be cathartic. Have you listened to The Dating Game Killer podcast? It’s chilling! What is most disturbing is how many times he committed absolutely heinous crimes, was given a slap on the wrist, and was then freed to assault and kill again! Just shocking! It was really eye-opening to me with regard to the value, or lack there of, placed on girls and women. I hope that’s changing… 😵‍💫😵‍💫 Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I read the fact that he is a code expert differently. I work as an architect in a different city and what he is describing about "negotiating" the code is pretty accurate. I spent years designing Nursing homes, they don't exactly fit the code and to make them functional we have to engage in a great deal of negotiation with the regulatory bodies. The accessibility codes are written for independence and individuals in group homes or in nursing homes are by definition not independent. Something as simple as showering someone in a nursing home requires two to three nurses/aids. That many people simply do not fit into a 30"x60" shower (the largest allowed by ADA). So the code isn't appropriate in that instance and there currently isn't a code that is. So we go off of industry guidelines and work out deals with the city and explaining this to them (this is actually something they usually readily acknowledge). But we still have to document all decisions for a particular building. And a different owner may want different adjustments. The same conversation happens around older buildings. It can be utterly impossible to update them to meet existing codes without tearing them down and starting over. But code officials often ignore the addendums to codes that accommodate this. So in we go with our code books armed with chapter and verse to argue with them. Additionally, very time a new code is adopted, we have issues with the inspectors trying to enforce the newest code on buildings that were already under construction when the code went into effect - we are required to meet the code in effect at the time of permitting not the code in effect at the time of completion. Buildings can take years to build and code changes of mere inches can have very dramatic and expensive implications. I just went through this with a code change to the size of bathroom stalls. The latest code made the accessible stall 4" bigger in both directions. We are built and there is nowhere to get the extra 4" - but we do meet the code that we were permitted under and that is the legal requirement. For what it is worth - I see someone who really enjoys living on the edge of the requirements, finding the loopholes, and besting other people's arguments. He likes to test the rules, see how far he can push them and what he can get away with. All of these things are pretty common traits of people who are good at what he does. He's into being in control of the rules. The rules are subject to his mental powers. It is about manipulation. Not so much him liking rules. Though he does like making other people follow the rules.

Scott really got my attention with his description of a manipulator, or psychopath, as someone controlling you by controlling the doses, ‘drops’, of dopamine like a drug to get you to follow them. Very powerful and incredibly helpful to take notice of someone telling you everything you didn’t even know you wanted to hear and ask yourself if they could be feeding you dopamine for their own benefit. Thank you Scott! All 4 of you guys blew me away with specific observations and references from a seemingly very boring interview!

I worked for NYC back in the day and the Building Department was one of my clients. I am wondering if I ever had to deal with Heuermann on something like a permit denial or building code violation. By the way, as a lawyer for the NYC Building Department and other agencies, I had to read the codes, too. And I will assure you the building inspectors know those codes, too! So do the administrators/commissioners the inspectors answer to. His self-aggrandizing that he told the City how to do its job is incredible and a bit ludicrous!

I am a New Yorker and an interior designer that works in an architecture firm. Currently live in long island and work in Manhattan. I know a few architects that worked with Rex in the past. They said he was a very nice guy and easy to work with. I agree with Greg … you must consider NY culture. I watched this interview and didn’t find anything off about him. HE is being interviewed about HiS business… why would he not sell himself? Yes he probably rehearsed some of these stories… but he has his own business.. he has to sell himself to potential clients. This is his “elevator pitch.” Coming from the same place… and the same industry… this is how people in the industry talk. Architecture is also a bit of an egotistical industry in general. So nothing about him seems out of the ordinary. Also some of the things he says that imply he is doing a better job than others is completely Typical in this field. We all feel that way lol. Probably because our job involves a crazy about of attention to detail, a crazy about of time and overtime, yet our pay sucks compared to much easier jobs. People think architects get paid well, they don’t. That’s a big misconception. Needless to say there is a lot of bitterness among us. What makes the dynamic between these two weird is that the guy interviewing him seems to know nothing about the architecture field or is very inexperienced. For example he laughed at “1938 building code” but Rex was not trying to make a joke. It is common for architects working in Manhattan to have to go back to very old building codes when doing work in historic or land marked buildings. I can imagine being a veteran in the field being interviewed by someone who has no clue what you are talking about is annoying. Work with people just like Rex all the time. Nothing off to me.

My insight on the narcissism in the hammer: I’m a furniture maker. In the “woodworking world” cabinetry making is considered the most admired and precise form of all woodwork, especially if done by hand. This ranking higher than a carpenter (framer), turner, knife maker, epoxy artist, live edge woodworker or wood sculptor, all subcategories of woodworking. Cabinetmaking the highest, and taking the most time to learn, requires precision…so the hammer is the final tool to perfect an already perfect handmade creation. It’s gentle and won’t sabotage the work. Almost like a mallet. Which he compares to the opposite a framing hammer (a lower more aggressive form of woodwork in the hierarchy). Also, for a woodworker the more tools they own, the grander they are seen in our community especially well made hand tools, I’m shocked he didn’t throw in the word “Japanese” cabinetmakers hammer which would have been the pinnacle of the tool chain. My guess he has a pretty well stocked shop, and there is a big generational component to working in your dad’s original shop. There he can fulfill all the things he believes he has fell short of to his dad right there in the shop amongst the tools. A connection is made through the lumber and the tools, he probably has a past to process regarding his dad.

That choice of tools summed up his whole “self description”. You can be smart, persuasive, be able to solve problems, but, when it all boils down he chooses to be a hammer - or a tool that ultimately is using force. “It always yeilds excellent results.” He prefers to force his result. Even after all his self bolstering answers, that one answer wrapped him up in a concise 6’ 4” package of negativeness. Unless all you are looking for is someone to steamroll your project through the system at all costs. I thought about it as a job interview question. What tool in your tool belt of experience do you consider your strongest tool? If you work with people, being a hammer does not make you a good team player. You are just a controller. Just my perception.

If you showed me the Rex interview without knowing the details I'd swear the interviewer was the one that was off. I realize he might be acting strangely because he's uncomfortable, as Chase and Mark say, but its so over the top its borderline inappropriate. And he brought a dog to the interview? To an architects office? That's really odd.

To me, the interviewer is typical NYC, where you see all kinds of people. I do think he catches something is "off" about Rex, and he's being overly friendly as a way of dealing with it. And he's not a professional interviewer, so part of that might also be that he is not used to this role at all.

Hubby and I had a doctor like Rex. Full of himself, putting down our prior doctors, telling us how lucky we were to have him. How successful he is, but he worked out of a butthole of a single room practice. Wore same pair of trousers, each time we saw him (thanks to the food stain, slightly visible). Wore a stethoscope around his neck constantly, even when he wasn’t using it, so you would KNOW he was the doctor. He put me on edge immediately and I told hubby I would never see him alone. Benefit of the doubt, we only lasted two more visits and that was enough. Later we found out the $1,500 injections he wanted to give us, our new doc told us were ones we didn’t need, so on top of being an insufferable blow hard, jumped up (Brit for acting better classed than you really are), he was dishonest and money grubbing. When I fired him, he said I would have to pay $1,000 to get a copy of my records. I told him to get knotted (another Britism - you get a visual).

Then, when Rex talks about “needing to persuade something” the interviewer makes the joke “not someone”. I know that’s an easy joke to go for, but if i were interviewing someone I really liked or who put me at ease, i dont think I would interrupt them as the interviewer to make that joke.

The breath to control the conversation is to eliminate a chance for someone to interrupt or speak. My SIL used this to excellence. Just as you think you can say something in a break, the breath becomes a continuation of the sentence so no one else can speak. At the 1:1 mark- your discussions are all my ex SIL. The interviewer laughs because he can see that a story could be funny, however the narcissist tells a story but is unable to see humor and tell it with humor?

But what about the defensivnes in his body language while he is telling who he is? It is also jarring. Every sentence Has this strange cadence where the voice goes up at the end of the sentence. The whole thing looks as if he is saying that is who I am and there is really nothing else there.... born here, an architect , voice goes up.. Hiding something or at best not sincere

I totally agree with you, Jessica. But tell me you haven’t used the term “in the wild.” I use it and laugh inside every time I drop it in a conversation. Scott has a couple hand gestures that make me laugh, too. One is what I’d call a maniacal or evil genius exaggerated manipulator, he uses it when he’s happy and there’s a psychopath on deck. 😊 The other one is hard to describe, but it’s where he is indicating “one” with his index finger up, all other fingers making a circle at the palm and his wrist faces away from him, then he swiftly flicks his wrist rotating the “soft underbelly 😜” of his wrist and entire forearm so his palm ends up facing himself and his entire hand rises about 2-5” during this swift motion. This gesture, depending on the context, can mean different things, but I laugh every time he does it because it looks like he’s performing the world’s fastest and shallowest proctological exam. 😂😂😂 It’s an “ah-HA” gesture or “eureka” or maybe even “up yours” in some cultures or circumstances? Regardless, the man makes me laugh!!! …and he’s so damned handsome too ❤😉🤗
