The prime suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance boasted about being a "master criminal", a leading witness has revealed. Former friend-turned-police informer Helge Bushing is understood to have told police of Christian Brueckner's gloats amid a fresh probe into the convicted offender. Helge B, 52, met his fellow German a year before Madeline McCann vanished aged three and was the person who identified Christian B to cops in connection with the childs disappearance. A source in Portugal who is close to the investigation says: “Helge B has spoken at length to officers about the time he spent with Christian B, where they were carrying out crimes together side by side. He told them how Christian B often boasted of being really, really good at what he did, a master criminal and how the police were useless."
Do you believe that Christian B is the killer of Madeleine McCann? Or is he innocent?

Mark, I think you might have slipped up a bit. At 1:26:18 you propose a way of handling the case, setting up Helga as "a credible witness" that they are going to "put in front of a jury". The Brunswick court is in Germany and Germany, like almost every country in Europe, doesn't use a court system that is based on citizens that can be easily fooled and manipulated by lawyers.

As a german native speaker I'll try breaking down some of his speech patterns and verbal clues. I love what Chase is capable of in that regards, I'll try to show I learned something. Video 1: He is speaking a mild west german dialect. He uses common language, no fancy vocabulary. He talks in a direct way, not using qualifiers. He does use the word "irgendwie" (somehow), which is often used as a qualifier, but he uses it only once and in a meaningful way, so I don't count that. They get into emotional stuff after only a couple of sentences, so it's impossible to establish a baseline here. AI translation is wrong when he says "she didn't scream" as opposed to "she didn't write" at 2:37. His syntax gets mixed up a little when he talks about being shocked when he realizes Christian Brückner's slip. He describes his feeling as "richtig elend" (real miserable). He repeats that sentence. Both times he says this, he ends his sentence with "yes". I'm not sure wether to count this as a qualifier or a usual thing in his dialect to be affirmative. He talks like a no-BS guy. Interesting, sounds good so far. Video 2: Translation wrong again, he says he told the police in 2008. He says he gave Scotland Yard the name of "diesen Herrn" (Herr could be translated as "this gentleman", but the correct translation would be "this Mister"). He keeps saying "yes" in the end of his sentences, I think it's his baseline to use it often. He is using more of the "yes" when saying that they didn't arrest the guy, think it's a sign of his insecurity about why that is, maybe insecurity about his own credibilty. He again repeats his sentence when saying that nothing happened afterwards. Sounds to me as if he's saying important things twice. He's saying important things twice. Video 3: AI translation goes "he was laid off" when he says he got out of prison. When telling about the 10th anniversary there's an ouch moment for me, as he uses the word "Jubiläum" (jubilee) instead of "Jahrestag" (anniversary). I don't make anything of it, think he just doesn't have the precise vocabulary to make this distinction. He seems genuinely emotional about the thing coming back to his memory after all that time. Conscience? I get the feeling that he is trying to give up his criminal career in favour of earning money with TV interviews. Video 4: Again he says the important things twice. "Biggest mistake of my life. Biggest mistake of my life." Meaning he gave up his new home and being a persona-non-grata there. Soon followed by stating "I'm not proud of it. I'm not proud of it." Meaning not being proud to have helped to rat out the suspect. Maybe also not being proud of his criminal past and people knowing about it. Think he's also not being proud of even knowing the suspect. Here he is doing "yes" in the end with an upward inflection, a common way in german like in english you'd say "you know?" or "right?" as he's asking for acknoledgement. Video 5: Here's the first time he is going "äh" (uh) when making assumptions about the suspect, his speech is slowing down. This is consistent with it being just assumptions. He was strongly confirming that he thinks Brückner was capable of the crime, "after all that he has come to know about him in the meantime." (It was in the german media, that Brückner was involved in several s*xual abuse cases earlier.) Video 6 and 7: When he talks about his health being affected and sleeping problems it's the first time he sounds rehearsed to me. He propably uses the wording he was talking about his health with doctors. He's back to his normal speech patterns when talking about his feelings when his last friend died on the island of Corsica (AI missed that) and he couldn't even go to the funeral. Then he addresses Christian Brückner personally, calling him out as guilty and and deserving to be punished. Again he is talking about videos. (Mark nails it here 1:22:51) Those were mentioned before, parts of the interview must have been cut. There is stuff missing, guess they were talking about the specific content of those videos and couldn't show it. I believe that he is truthful throughout the whole interview. - Wow, this is my longest ever comment for any youtube vid. One more thing... Absolutely annoying for me, and i can't stress this enough: Artificial Intelligence is an oxymoron. AI translation doesn't deserve to even be called a translation. It is useless AY EFF. This one is riddled with mistakes and there's lots of stuff just missing. You need a human being able to understand things to translate. Understanding two languages isn't even enough to translate, translation is a skill in itself that is needed in addition to knowing languages.

I do not know about Germans, but here in The Netherlands there is an entire culture of protection around children. Even the most hardened awful people will speak to children with kindness, softness and look to their safety. It is just unacceptable to be mean to a child or place them in jeopardy here... so a criminal coming forward about a child abduction or child harm would not be questioned here... there is a bold line not to be crossed in this country, no matter who you are.

I work in palliative care support with patients and their families. A lot of his body language, particularly when he takes a sip of the water (the behaviour that Mark identified as anger) looks just like the grief and loss we see in clients, particularly with a "tough guy". Sadness and grief are not acceptable and a sign of weakness, so it presents as anger. Often they are actually angry with themselves for having those emotions. It's kind of heart breaking. Oh, and for the record, the interviewer does the exact opposite of what a person should do in that situation. “Look on the bright side” is not a helpful comment for a person suffering from loss.

I suppose this tough guy is highly criminal and capable of a lot of things but I doubt he would actively do something to a child. Yep. I would want to have a sit down with Chris B and ask him what he thought happened. Chris has done horrible things, but it is very questionable he took Maddie. There is circumstantial evidence that points in his direction - leaving town within a day or two after she disappeared, changing car registrations, showing up with a large sum of money and a better RV in the months that followed, some of his cell phone activity around the time she disappeared seems questionable as well as other criminals he knew. Likewise, there are things that point to Maddie's parents such as the cadaver dogs alert in the apartment and the stench in their rental car.

@@twovirginiacats3753 I have posted this before, but my take is that the German authorities have nothing on B towards Maddie. In fact, they didn't even have a strong case against B regarding his other crimes. They suspected that when he was in Portugal, he might have targeted other nationalities than Germans, so they used the international media attention that was spurred by the Maddie-allegations to find more of his real victims. An Irish woman recognized him on UK TV as her perpetrator. She is now one of the main witnesses in the German trial.

The earlier interviews in Portugal, conducted the day after the event, are considered more "raw." Notably, the reenactment appears to involve a lot of deception. A revealing moment occurs when Jane Tanna accidentally mentions Gerry being unusually late the night before; his quick deflection and Jane's laughter suggest she recognised the slip. Furthermore, that night, a witness reported seeing Gerry carrying a girl down the steps-an aspect that warrants careful scrutiny.

Let me explain the subtleties of german grammar: „Sie hat nicht geschrien.“ = „She didn‘t scream.“ (literally: „She has not screamed.“) „Sie hat ja nicht geschrien.“ = „It‘s because she didn‘t scream.“ (literally: „She has yes not screamed.“) The little word „ja“ gives the sentence a whole different connotation. It turns a presumption into an observation.

I think that there are some situations where it is easy to be lulled into a false sense of security. I always think we should make a distinction between a natural consequence and a deliberate intent. Idk how else to say it. If I am reckless and too close to the edge of a cliff, and I slip and fall or if the cliff crumbles and I fall or people are goofing off and someone falls, the resulting injury is more of a "natural" consequence of poor decision making. However if I am too close to the edge, but someone deliberately shoved me, yes, I was careless and reckless and made myself vulnerable - but the other person made a conscious choice to do something terrible. That is on them. I'm not saying that anyone ISN'T blaming the perpetrator most of all - just sort of randomly inserting my inner thoughts...lol. the kids were sleeping, the parents thought they were secure enough and will probably not forgive themselves regardless of what any of us think. I'm sad for them.

When Helge directly addresses the camera, he stumbles over his grammar twice. This makes it perfectly congruent once again. That's exactly the anger Mark talked about. He's so agitated at Bruckner (who presumably called him a liar in court or somesuch) that his language nearly fails him. That's exactly what you'd expect from someone typically resorting to talking with their fists when they're *that* angry with someone.

Congratulations, guys! I'm a native German and am impressed about your analysis of the interview mainly from body language. You're absolutely on point for the most parts. Understanding the content, my impression is, that there is something bigger going on. Busching is concerned about his wellbeing and feels threatened. Brückner is in custody, so the threat has to be from a different source.

Hello, Chase. In my recovery group, someone helped me figure out what you described about judging others. People whom I resented, or those who seemed to rub me the wrong way, exhibited behavior or traits that I had. I saw, in them, behavior that I found distasteful in myself. It was a hard truth to accept, but it made me more self-aware...less likely to be condescending to others in my life. Funny to hear the same message from two very different sources. Peaceful day to you and yours.

Just as a hint from a German citizen: The last e in Helge is pronounced like an e in existencial, error or egg ( egg read backwards immitates the g and e sound in Helge just fine). It´s a rather old Skandinavian name, that is quite uncommon in younger ppl, mostly found in the north of Germany, the Slavic version would be Oleg. It derives from the protogermanic "hailaga", unharmed, healthy.

It seems to me that this is a man who feels genuine and justified moral outrage, but had struggled internally for years, knowing his own background, with whether he even had a right to own it - something which had been reinforced by the authorities not acting on his tip. Years later, we see a man who has come to feel that yes, he can own that slice of humanity within, despite all his personal contradictions and history. But as he takes this huge personal step in speaking publicly, he is also fully aware of how others may not see that, and in turn, not give any credence to what he has to say. That in itself makes me believe that he is a man compelled by his internal moral compass, no matter how damaged or previously askew, to speak out because it's the right thing to do.

  • @amandapoyner8141

    @amandapoyner8141

Great analogy of the 'moral compass,' but it seems that his compass may be pointing him in the direction of self preservation/damage control rather than a moral sense of duty to humanity. Trafficking other human beings for a living is undoubtedly one of the lowest and most inhumane acts that can be committed. Sometimes people are less than we would hope for them to be and in resistance to accepting that bad people do bad things (and worse than bad), we can let them off the hook as perpetrators without them having truly earned that level of compassion. It's better to be disillusioned and see people real, than to live in a lie of perception where we hoodwink ourselves.

OOOH so you analyze cases in other languages too! I bet you could reach the stars by analyzing the most famous Italian case: the misterious death of Liliana Resinovich. Her husband (a narcissistic histrionic) he's *every day* in every tv show, talking for hours, since almost 2 years, blinking rate at 1000 per minute if they ask him about his alibi, which he doesn't have, instead of searching his wife, the very first day he sold her stuff, he washed things with BLEACH, he washed his car and hide 20.000 euro cash, he blocked her lover's number on her phone and so on. Every time he opens his mouth is a huge red flag. BUT Italian police tried to classify everything as "suicide". Instead of meeting his secret lover that morning as she told, she "hide in the bushes for 3 weeks then packed herself in trash bags, lied down beside a parking lot and died like this", without any insect or animal touched her for days. I would love so much an episode made by you! As I said, it's the most known case in Italy since the last 2 years and you can find hours of very suspicious interviews on youtube

Correction at the end- after CB wasin custody for the rape of the elderly lady, the cops went to a run down old factory property associated w CB. In searching the grounds they thought they'd found small, child sized remains but after digging it up it was the grave of his beloved dog... HOWEVER- beneath the dog, the cops found a zip loc bag (preserved) packed full of hard drives & zip drives that were filled with these videos. The prosecutor has said that they have confirmed Maddie was no longer alive, when asked if it was remains, dna, etc the cops have always said no but if they keep saying they are 100% positive that she is dead, then the digital data from that dog grave must, by process of elimination, be the evidence that has convinced them of her demise. Both DW & ABC Australia have produced some excellent "dateline" type programs about this Bruckner in relation to Maddies case but they were a few years back.

You all looked a bit weary but you gave it your all, and that’s what has convinced me that the popularity of your channel is partly due to your example of professionalism under pressure. In terms of this episode’s subject, I was surprised none of you mentioned something to the effect of: Call it a midlife crisis, don’t we all have a time of reckoning when we look over our lives? This guy just lost his last friend, was denied access to his funeral, now has none and he’s looking back over what he has done with his life. I do believe we can develop a conscience, we can have that “come to Jesus moment“. Perhaps this is a matter of him, telling himself “yeah, I was into crime for a profit, and I was pretty slick at times, but I wasn’t THAT kind of criminal” trying to distinguish himself from someone who steals and kills children. Maybe the contract he’s trying to work out has as much to do with God or an emerging conscience as it does the police…

Minor tidbit: The wearing of the gold bracelet on the other arm confirms the likelihood that the watch is real gold. He likes showing off his yellow gold. It means something to him.

If they were fake, why didn't he go bigger and more gaudy? Go big or go home. I tend to believe they're real only because they aren't bigger... And honestly, you can buy extremely cheap gold and real watches overseas - doesn't mean they're fake.

Maybe he's coming forward now because he had something to do with this and he's trying to get ahead of it? Wouldn't it make sense for him to come forward and throw the other guy under the bus, maybe get some immunity, before the lid blows off?

Scott, as a scientist and perpetual student, I love your references. They don't feel "ripped off." You know your stuff and you know who published it! That's impressive! And it lets us know where to look for more info outside of all of your books. I also love when the the four of you get into a discussion on how you approach certain things. It helps to demonstrate that in body language there can be different break downs and views, even disagreements. Us 800k+ followers aren't all going to think alike all the time either!

The value of your channel is that four such very different approaches are taken and the outcomes often land in the same region - please iron out whatever it is that needs sorting in your interpersonal dynamics. Your work here is interesting, useful and educational.

I don’t understand German. I believe him. I believe that he really thinks this is the guy. I have been in the same position. I thought I was right, but still. I think he called Scotland Yard and they did not want to be bothered with something international. Too much trouble and politics. He may have made mistakes in his life. Now that he is putting himself out, he is ignored

Hope you will be covering the 19 year old girl (Alexee Trevizo) who hid her baby in a trashcan and left him to die after having denied she was pregnant. She's trying to argue the baby was stillborn and her lawyer is trying to blame the hospital. The autopsy showed air in the baby's lungs. There's also an interesting dynamic between this girl and her mother. I know you guys can handle a case that shocking in an intelligent and sensitive way so I hope it's on your radar!

If he smuggles people for a living, why does he care about the Maddie McCann case getting a resolution? You’d think he hasn’t got enough empathy in his body to dobb this dude in. Maybe he just wants some fame?
