This and That: 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy & Russian Test Skates (Kamila Valieva, Alexandra Trusova)

Спорт

This week, Deanna Stellato and Maxim Deschamps, Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, Loena Hendrickx and Keegan Messing claimed gold at the 2022 Nebelhorn Trophy. Then, the Russians broke the internet with the most over-the-top test skates to date. It had a red carpet, theatrics and a Kamila Valieva free skate that left everyone talking. It was a return from the abyss for Adeliia Petrosian, Elizaveta Tuktamysheva, Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov, Sofia Akateva, Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov, Mark Kondratiuk, Dmitri Aliev, Eteri Tutberidze and Mikhail Kolyada. It is another jam-packed episode of 'This and That'.

I don't get how Eteri and co. can give Kamila a program about the "evil west" scrutinizing her when it was them who threw her to the wolves. The audacity. She only had to pull down her hood to cover her face because they left her to deal with the media all by herself. One of the coaches should have been with her at all times since her parents couldn't be present. I also don't think that a (then) 15 year old would come up with the idea to take a banned substance all by herself. How much she knew will always remain a mystery, but it was the adults around her who put her in that situation. Sadly, it seems like she's gotten completely brian washed by the Russian narrative around her and is being used for propaganda. She's a product of the twisted system she grew up in and may never even realize it.

For those who didn’t understand Kolyda’s program with crazy hands in gloves. This strange choreography beautifully suits the music called “tango in mental hospital”. The main character thinks he is seducing and dancing with beautiful girl, but he doesn’t realize that he’s dancing with himself in the in his white isolated little room in mental clinic.

This tango is part of Schnittke's opera named "Life with an idiot". As a punishment for some misdeeds, the main character had to take an idiot to his house. It turned out to be a certain Vladimir, who at first behaved very quietly, but over time his behavior changed so much that the owner was forced to declare MARTIAL LAW in his house. This is Russian culture, gentlemen: having plunged into it once, you will never touch the ground under your feet again.

She is talented of course but her amazing consistency last season was suspicious from the beginning and now they found her guilty of doping. No matter how talented she is, she needs to be punished, otherwise what kind of example does it set? In the test skates we could see "clean" Kamila: slow speed, slow spins, no quads or 3A, she had to pause for 10sec in the middle of the program. She is still talented, but not 50+ points ahead everyone else like they tried to make it look last year

It seems to me all of this was timed to generate maximum sympathy for kamila despite the fact that clearly mostly everyone really blames the coaches. And the coaches are flat out deflecting the blame. Truly incredible...everytime I think they've hit their low, they keeping stooping lower...

Producer Yana Rudkovskaya appreciated Kamila Valieva's free program dedicated to the Beijing Olympics. “As for the topic of Camila's free program, this is a debatable issue. It's one thing to skate such an indicative number, another thing is to constantly skate this difficult program during the season. How ready Camila is to go through all this again, how comfortable she will be - the question is for her. Even for me, a very strong woman, it is not easy to relive and remember the difficult moments of my life, but what can we say about the girl. But I have no right to advise or judge anything. She is an athlete, a member of the adult Russian team. Since she agreed to this story, it means that she knows that she can do it. Maybe she wants to convey a message to the whole world. We believe in Camila's innocence. And in my opinion, the skater, through the program, through her skating, wants to convey to the world that she suffered absolutely in vain. This is her choice and the choice of her coaches. In Russia, this program will touch the soul, in the world the reaction will be resonant. No one knows how the situation will be interpreted and what the final verdict on its history will be. I am sure that for both the coaching staff and the skater, it was a difficult decision, but they went for it. I repeat, as a viewer, the program touched my soul, I had emotions. Everything else is already a matter of time and the final verdict on her case, comfort, her mental and physical state, ”said Rudkovskaya.

IMHO size is always relevant when discussing pairs and dance, and not in a mean-spirited way. It's something I always notice! Of course, we all know one can't discuss weight these days. Height is always a factor, and I wondered if the Nebelhorn announcer wasn't thinking more of height than weight when he made his comments. Thinking about the partnerships of Marissa Castelli/ Simon Shnapir, Sui and Han, Cain and LeDuc, Hawayek and Baker, and many others. These teams all have different challenges (or sometimes advantages) due to their height.

Russian coach Sergey Davydov spoke about Kamila Valieva's new free program, dedicated to the Beijing Olympics. “Valiyeva’s free program is a challenge to the whole situation that took place last season. This is probably the answer to all the ill-wishers who said different things, wrote and still write. To evaluate this performance as an art... Camila always skates well. For me, nothing has changed here, except for this new idea. I think that yesterday's performance was hard for Valieva, not so much emotionally as physically. Of course, they folded after such a difficult season. Apparently, they gave a little slack, gained a little weight. Of course, this all affects - the skates are harder. And a late set of forms. I think everything will fall into place. I don't think it's a matter of emotions. It's a matter of wanting to move on. The main thing is that Camila should not be cut off by all kinds of media, conversations, doping and so on. If there is a desire, everything else can be overcome,” Davydov said.

If Valieva's FS had JUST been to The Truman Show (without creepy voiceovers and hoodie), I would've loved it. The music is gorgeous and she seems invested in it and it seemed very cathartic for her - at least for today! But what about all season and 4 times a day? Ugh. Gordeeva only did that emotional number ONCE. 😟 It is a pity, I love how she's matured and moved on the ice. I can enjoy her skating more without all of the gimmicky Ultra C moves. If she had the right choreographer & coach, she wouldn't need them. She could be the next Carolina if she gets away from Eteri, but sadly, I don't see that happening.

Carolina had one foot skating and spectacular skating skills. Valieva has spins. That's it.

@@lild2515 Kamila also listens to, feels and responds to her music. I saw a potential artist there today. She also has beautiful extensions, that with non-kicking choreo with some meaning could be spectacular.

I am afraid her kicking is an essential part of her so called beautiful extensions. So it’s either really beautiful and just kicking after all.

@@lild2515 She has the long limbs, hits beautiful positions and has musicality. If under the guidance of a better coach and choreographer (imagine what Lori could do for her), she's young enough that she can still work on her SS and become on par with Carolina. Obviously she's not there yet, and will never get there under Eteri, but she has the potential for it.

I see what you’re saying but at this point it’s too late As a competitor. She could develop artistically with the right inspiration and guidance over a number of years and natural maturation, but I do agree with you - that’s very unlikely to happen. Eteri traps these athletes and they essentially have no way out.

Will you ever be satisfied? Previously you wanted to compete without Russians, now you have such an opportunity. What else do you want? If you don't like Eteri's training system or Kamila's program, you always have the right not to watch. Why am I not watching your championship? Because I don't care what's going on with you. The problem with you Americans is that you think the whole world must live and act the way you do.
