I agree with Dave: Shoma has a quality that distinguishes him from other skaters (and makes him at his best more exceptional than Nathan and Yuzu). While most skaters skate to music, Shoma's movements (and passion) give vividness to music to the extent that he literally brings music to life. He does what good musicians do!

@@jolandamelville3233 true, Yuzu did have a bit of a stiff body and often looked down when he skated. But he was the most consistent for a while. He's skating was very powerful, and he won so many titles, so I get it why he's so popular. But the reason I prefer Shoma is that he's an artist, the honesty and raw feelings in his skating are unmatchable. The way he uses edges and hand movements 💕 The way his eyes sparkle, the way he carries this difficult classical music, superb.

I have always liked Shoma's skating over Yuzu's. Yuzu is a beautiful skater, to be sure, but he doesn't move me. He always came across to me as cool and smooth and calm, with very low key emotion. Shoma just has a spark inside of him. Whether he's trying to communicate having fun, or being sexy, or sad, I feel that it comes across. I'm so glad he's getting his time in the sun.

I could happily watch him do an entire program of step sequence and crossovers and be content. And his arms are magnificent. I loved loved Kaori's short program but was so sad to see things fall apart in the free. I really appreciate that she's trying something so different choreographically this season and I'm totally on board with her whole new thing this year. It's clearly been a challenge for her to put it all together in competition so far this season. It'll be difficult and I do worry about the pressure (being reigning world champion, olympic burnout, I also believe it's gonna be a home worlds for her this year) but idk I'm just praying to the skating gods that she can deliver when the time comes because I think it would be such an epic moment and she's capable of making it happen. And tbh she's just my favorite this year and I'm rooting for her lol. So thrilled for Shoma, his free skate is his best ever imo. I could watch him skate all day. Sad for the junior Czech ice dancers. They're so captivating and to see them fall not once but twice broke my heart. But they're so young and they have time to become more controlled and refined and I look forward to seeing them develop.

I think with Shoma, he just doesn't have the "idol" personality and therefore, he has less "extreme" fans. Add to it that he is currently alienating some of his most extreme Japanese fans by dating Marin officially, they really don't like that he went public about dating her (official website announcement) and did some ice shows together with her during the summer. For those extreme fans it's obvious when he's spending time with her and they really don't like that to the point of not wanting to support him by going to his shows or competitions anymore. He has strong sponsors in both Toyota and Mizuno, but they're pretty relaxed with him. Yeah he did some PR things for them (especially after Olys) but after the pandemic they are pretty chill. Shoma never... he doesn't have much grievances to have the type of fans who goes to "defend" and "fight" for him against injustice or some other evil shady things in FS. He doesn't complain much about his scores or some questionable UR calls. He's very selective of giving interviews when it's not in the context of competition (the Olympic Channel features seem to be the lone exception). He's fine with any kind of support, including silent fans who don't buy any tickets or merchandise. He asks fans to respect other skaters even though fans may not like them. He has a strong support team, great coaches (Ghislain was seen working pretty extensively with him at GPF, and they look pretty friendly with each other), and have a pretty good relationship with Japanese coaches and officials from JSF, so there's like no particular reason his fans need to show how they "support" him. Oh and he has a cordial relationship with his old coaches too, Machiko Yamada has repeatedly supported him in public, and his current EX program is made by Mihoko Higuchi, so no bad blood there and there's no need to blame his old coaches for his 2019 slump... He's also pretty cool with almost all competitors. There's no "perpetual victim" angle with him for his fans to really get into it. He also doesn't starve his fans of content, there's always the daily puppy video with a short update on what he's doing or an update by his personal trainer on where they at and what his condition is. So there's no particular hysteria or panic there either, he's always somewhere and his fans can keep track of him easily. TL;DR Shoma's not a poor meow meow, and after both Dai and Yuzuru, he just seems so... low maintenance. So most of his fans (actual Shoma fans, not extreme Dai and Mao fans pretending to be Shoma fans to hate on Yuzuru) are pretty silent and calm... and well-adjusted too. Plenty of them chose to not go to NHK to watch live due to COVID-19 concerns and/or big expenses (NHK is in Sapporo, Hokkaido which is pretty far and expensive to reach from the main island). And plenty of them didn't go to GPF because they have work and it's not allowed to ask for leave to go overseas in some companies. So yeah, his fans is pretty solid but they're not extreme. I think the most they did recently was to complain to TV Tokyo, the broadcasting channel and organizer of Japan Open/Carnival on Ice during late summer because they were making a "Most Memorable Moments at Japan Open" TV Program and asked fans to vote which performances they most remember of, and at first there was no Shoma performance for fans to vote to, despite him attending Japan Open 6 times already and was about to go for his 7th appearance. It got picked up as "Shoma fans complaining". But at the end the voting manner got adjusted, TV Tokyo apologized and Shoma fans came to Japan Open. So... not a lot of grudge there either. I think with idols and superstars you need to have a phenomenon to project onto, something "bigger" than life to obsess about and feel better from. And Shoma just doesn't have that. He's a normal person and he's honest (to his own detriment). Even when he's being marketed as the idiot airhead (because of his straightforward answers) it soon became clear that he's clearly not just that. But it makes him even harder to be marketed, because he's good enough to be ahead of everyone, but not good enough to be better than Yuzuru. So he's kind of stuck in between, not old enough to be seen as the underdog senior trying to keep up with the younger skaters, but not young enough to be seen as the underdog junior trying to break through the top ranks.

To be honest, now I don't have the money to spend for traveling to the competitions and buying the tickets, but Shoma has said that he is thankful for any kind of support, including silent support. Isabeau's coach very much makes me concerned for Isabeau. The woman literally worships Eteri (gushing about how she's "the best coach in the world") and is clearly teaching that similar "spinning on the ice" jump technique to Isabeau. I really don't think Isabeau's bad technique will carry her past this season if she doesn't make any changes (I can also see a back injury coming with the way she heavily relies on her back for the lutz and flip). Yulia also saying how she knows Isabeau even better than her mother also raises a red flag to me. If it's true that she stormed out of that Philadelphia competition in August when Isabeau only narrowly beat Lindsay, that's honestly disgusting. Lindsay is also a very talented young girl (and with even better jumping technique).

After watching the Final, I was really looking forward to getting the This and That take, and y'all did not disappoint. Very insightful and entertaining show! My only content comment for today is about the Chock and Bates program. It seems they are using the the relationship between fire and fuel/air as a metaphor for the dynamics of their relationship on ice and perhaps off. When you think about how many people comment on the strong emotional presence of Madison, I see them as saying that her ability to bring the "fire" comes from the fuel (strength, skill, love) that Evan provides. What made this interpretation click for me is the flame motif of Madison's new costume. With the color of Evan's costume as the base, it literally looks like flame is rising out from him particularly in those spectacular lifts. So that's the story I'm going with until I hear differently. One other thing is that I'm not sure they need to get rid of the music entirely, but I think they should consider maybe taking the vocals out and pumping up the building drama of the instrumentals. Just a thought. Thank you as always for the great programming you put out week after week. It's a highlight of my week.

regarding korea's woes; i think it all comes down to some sort of cultural hold over. like adversity makes you better type of thing. we see it all the time especially in the early kpop mini documentaries. they practice until the early hours of the morning and repeat it the next day. the only good thing is that they know how to take care of their voices; like if they're sick/ have a tired voice, they should rest. but heaven forbid your body is tired when the big to do is only a week away! so i guess, it might be similar in korean skating. unless they're sick/injured, they might be expected to just grind through it. i don't know why it's not connecting to them -- fatigue is connected to performance and injuries after all. about the fan groups in japan. yeah yuzu has a popstar level appeal in japan but shoma has a dedicated fanbase too! but i do agree that yuzu got the momentum of myth-making behind him.

May I suggest a reply (more like a rant) on why their stadium was so empty? PRICES...180 euros (+10 of commissions) is a LOT of money for us (the average salary in this forgotten place is 1300 euros). "Under12" tickets were 170 which are the people we need to get involved in skating but can you imagine a family spending that much?!! And the prices of the other seats were a lot of money anyway. I know a lot of people who couldn't afford it and sadly missed a rare opportunity. I was so pissed off when I saw the prices because without Russians and most Japanese fans I knew it would be half empty. It was so heartbreaking (FISG was also upset) to see the stadium like that especially now that the Italians' podium placements are celebrated everywhere in the italian's media. On a more positive note...it was a great event and the first I had the media pass so I really soaked in the atmosphere! Seeing Shoma live so close, the victories of our athletes, the heartbreak of the senior ladies... a lot of emotions!

Went to see it live. Some thoughts: Empty Seats: the prices were crazy. Something like €280 for good seats per day! €180 for the sides or higher up. €400+ for the whole event. It’s nuts! As the result i think they only had 1/3 seats filled and the atmosphere was non-existent. Ladies Short: was my favorite event. I loved everybody. All my favorite underdogs together, only they are not underdogs anymore. Elim had the only mistake of the night, but I still emotionally connected with her program the most seeing it live, it was sublime.

neoliberal ISU with sport commodified to death... those are some grotesque prices. I thought Skate America's $300 tickets were insane because of the vulture capitalist hellscape but at least there was the excuse of the tiny venue in tyranical Suburbia; no reason to have even more insane prices at an Olympic arena for a final hosted by a second-tier Federation that's gonna host the next Olympics. Agree with the Barcelona crowd, they are the best public for all sorts of sports -- watch any Rhythmic Gymastics events held in Spain and it's like they're diehard fans for every gymnast of every country... I've seen gymnasts moved to tears by the cheering public.

This year was different, Russians and Hanyu fans are gone and mainly the local fans went or those who live in Europe. But with the ongoing energy crisis and the inflation and a weaker field compared to the previous years the tickets were way too expensive. The field will be even weaker at Europeans which won't be better than any Challenger events, and with Finland being such an expensive country I think the arena will be even emptier.

I'm with Jonathan. Nothing was sadder than my Czech junior team having those falls. It kind of reminded me that they were both new to ice dancing from singles just 2-2.5 years ago, which is wild considering how good they are. I definitely think they are the best when they're y'know, not having 4 falls in a competition. The speed and command of the baby Czechs are on another level, even compared to some of the senior teams. And judging by the scores, it's evident that the judges feel it too seeing how close they were to the top 2 despite the falls. I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to stay another season in juniors considering B/B age out and they're both still fairly new to ID, especially if they don't win jr worlds.

Re David Wilson and his nice programs. He said in an interview once that when he first met Yuna he didn't know what she could do. So he choreographed The Lark Ascending because it was it was quite generic and anyone could manage it. It was only after he saw her do her SP at world's, which I believe Tom Dickson choreographed, that he realised what he was working with. he probably takes that approach with all new clients. About the Korean thing and overtraining their athletes, I think it is their culture. I mean they hammer academics into kids,, they drill their K-Pop bands like it's an army. They did a doco on skating in career after Yuna made it popular and someone said parents and coaches are basically turning skating into another Korean pressure cooker system, where the kids have to practice for hours and hours and hours a day, just like some kids have to study for hours and hours and hours a day.

The problem with overcompeting is not overtraining. You can overtrain yourself even if you are not competing. The problem is that you simply can't peak too much and too often. The adrenaline that you get from competitions can't be sustained, the travels and time difference as well. KSU need to learn about pacing and how to prepare their athletes well. You just can't force them to compete in domestic comps a week before the most important competition of the 1st half of the season.

Alexa/Brandon have better pair elements than the Japanese for sure. But for me, it was clear the Japanese won, especially the free. Both pairs had two total mistakes on SBS jumps, but for A/B it was B making both mistakes for them, while the Japanese took one each. When I was watching the competition, I automatically watch the person who had just struggled on a SBS when they head into the next one. I think that’s why it felt like the Americans had more obvious mistakes, because I had been watching him specifically to see how he does on the second jumping pass. The Japanese were a bit off on the twist, but after some other pair had an even worse twist, it felt redeemable. So their mistakes were comparable, but I’d give the edge to the Japanese because of their skating skills and program. Obviously, I wish they had a program to let their joy be there for the whole four-minute skate, but I didn’t particularly mind the first 2/3 of their program. It was generic for a special team, but because of their lovely knee bend it was acceptable. And of course, the last 20 seconds when they allowed their smiles to break out was wonderful. For Alexa/Brandon, I felt their free wasn’t that good. The music is too slow for them especially in the beginning, and they can’t really match the energy. They would need more powerful, slow strokes that somehow generate more speed, like Sui and Han. Their movements were too fast for the music. Their short program was definitely more suited to them. Overall and in hindsight, I think Alexa/Brandon lost their chance to win when they lost the short, because that was their better program. The Japanese free passed really quickly for me, and I think the overall “smoothness” of their skating skills and emotions made it easier for the judges to go with them.

A team that should have been a clear favorite for a World title is losing ground because their coaches are trying to elevate other couples in their own training camp. Dave lease can you please stop spread rumors about Yuna, first Yuna's spirals have created some of the most iconic, memorable moment in skating history. e.g. the spiral in her legendary Homage to Korea program. Always the most marveled/watched spiral moment by fans globally, can't you hear the roar of the live audience, and her Chinese spiral profile in her Gershwin program has been used as symbols to represent women's skating in many occasions and her little spiral in SITC stsq, it made the commentator aww. Spiral is a dynamic movement (not the synonyms of overly extended legs), it has speed, ice coverage, phrasing etc. Yuna's spiral has all those in spades, although Yuna does not max her spiral's flexibility but the images she created is always beautiful and suited for the program/music. With Yuna, every vocabulary of figure skating, be it spiral, ina bauer, or even cross overs are used effectively, meaningfully, integrated to serve the program as a whole, never used as gimmicky to wow the audience. Second, Yuna does not has special treatment by KSU as well. Gosh, I could not disagree more about Hawayek's and Baker's free dance and the Japanese's free skate. I LOVE them both. With both of them I'm mesmerized start to finish. So, I didn't find Alexa and Brandon to be better here (even though I like them) because I found the Japanese so much more compelling to watch, and their errors were more minor. I love their flow. (And I still hate Alexa's and Brandon's music cut.) Agreed on pretty much everything else. But what I'm really mad about is the inconsistency of the calling of underrotations and edges. Isabeau only being called on her lutz in the short and not the long? (To be honest I think she should always be called.) Rinka's underrotations on her combo in the short, showed plain and clear in the replay but not called at all?

Well the answer to how Yuzu retiring would affect the sport is being answered. Organizers need to realize that the sport no longer has a skater with fans that are willing to go broke over and focus on attracting more casual fans. No casual fan is going to pay exuberant prices to see a live competition they aren't all that invested in. I went to several skate america and the prices for me were affordable but now that am following the sport in a casual way, i will never shell out for the prices i saw were being charged for this event. I paid (and get refunded) almost $900 USD for 2020 Worlds and I felt that was a good price for such a big event but a grand prix final with limited skaters who aren't big names charging hundreds for the full event....

Baram and Tioumentsev (USA Jr pairs national champions) are the team getting screwed by the new age rules changes. They can't skate juniors next year because he'll be too old (21). And they can't skate senior because she just turned 14 and will continue to be a year behind the increasing minimum age rule until the year after she turns 17. This really is a problem, and an unintended consequence of the age rules change. Ted did say on the stream that the ISU was looking at the issue, so hopefully it can work out a solution. Would really be a shame for them to have to split up or be ineligible to compete for the next 3 years. I've been really impressed with them since last year as a team with the potential technical skill to compete with the Russian teams.

Even without the change in age limit they'd still not be able to compete internationally for a couple of years. What do you think the ISU should do? Allow even older men to compete as juniors? Or let girls compete as seniors at a younger age, but only for Pairs? What message do you think that would send out... the ISU claims to have raised the age in an attempt to protect the wellbeing of young skaters.. but doesn't deem young female Pair skaters worthy of that protection.. The age change has been on the horizon for a while. Putting them together as a team was pretty stupid if they want them have longevity as team... but who knows if that was the intention..? Maybe he's not planning on competing much longer?

They only geoblock to countries that have a TV network that has bought the rights - if there’s no local channel, you get the ISU feed. They are protecting the investment that the networks have made. For example SBS Australia has the rights to ISU comps, but they didn’t live stream it so I used the vpn. I can watch the replay on SBS but not on KZread because it is geoblocked. Given VPNs are so accessible I think the business model for tv rights is screwed.
