This and That: 2022 Skate America & GP Russia (Ilia Malinin Quad Axel, Kaori Sakamoto)

Спорт

This week, the top skaters in the world headed to Norwood, Massachusetts for 2022 Skate America. Ilia Malinin landed a quad axel, Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier put on a pairs clinic with Deanna Stellato and Maxime Deschamps, Kaori Sakamoto showed up transformative programs, Isabeau Levito, Gracie Gold and Amber Glenn put the American ladies on the map, and Madison Chock and Evan Bates squeaked out a win over Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker (and we still love Kana Muramoto and Daisuke Takahashi). Meanwhile in Russia, Kamila Valieva attempted a quad toe and lost the free skate to Sofia Akatieva, Mikhail Kolyada and Dmitri Aliev made us feel like it was 2016, Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov were...themselves, and Annabelle Morozov and Devid Naryzhnyy gave us some of our favorite programs of the season. It is an episode of 'This and That' you won't want to miss!

Surprised more people haven't been talking about Jun's two programs this season. I think they're real crowd-pleasers and is my personal favourite packaging out of what we've seen by far. They play to his artistic strengths and once he gets his jumps a little more under control (curse you 3A) I believe this will be a very special season for him. Fingers crossed he finally breaks 100 in the short!

Wasn’t expecting portal innuendo from this recap. You’re spot on about rock type music being a good fit for Alexa and Brandon. The schmaltzy LP music they’ve been using the last couple doesn’t work to their strengths. They should be doing action/sci-fi/ thriller TV and movie scores like The Flight Attendant, Terminator, etc. They could have done a Mission Impossible LP and say they are depicting their journey to get their Olympic medals.

Well, you get a few more years out of the bad jumping from the back technique when you’re on a regimen of drugs since childhood. Isabeau doesn’t have the benefit of being born into a state sponsored doping program, which is good news for her internal organs & bone density long term health, but unfortunately her spine will likely suffer a similar fate because that type of jump technique is really bad for your back. She will just likely be done a bit sooner than the Russian girls. Like really any moment now a big injury or growth spurt could be it for her.

For your information, Mao has been quite visible in Japan since retiring. She toured all over Japan for 3 years for her “thanks tour” and now she is staging her “beyond tour”. It is unfortunate the international presence is limited partly due to Mao’s conscious effort to keep ticket price low and thus lacking international big name skaters. She has definitely contributed to keeping interest in figure skating high in Japan the middle of pandemic.

I was literally like this 😱😱😱😱 after that 3T/3A Ilia threw down at the end of that. I mean...How!?! You need speed, speed, speed to pull off a 3A, so...How!?! The kid’s for real & it’s rather scary in a really great way. 😁 I was so thrilled for Deanna & Max!!! One thing no one else seemed to notice though...The way Max treated Deanna during the Podium Ceremony. I mean, he was clearly looking out for her, like in the way he helped her up on the Podium, to how he was making sure the focus was on her....It just reminded me so much of Sergei Grinkov & how he treated/presented Katia back in the day. Maybe just me, but it was something I picked up on. 😊 My very favourite moments of Skate America : Ilia showing he’s for real here, Deanna & Max’s performances, but especially that oh so special SP of Gracie Gold!!! I never ever thought I’d ever see her at a GP again. So when her name was announced, I cracked my neck I turned my head so fast to the iPad screen. 😄😄 Then I was doing this afterwards 😂😂😂😂😂 Haven’t yet seen either of the Ladies or Dance Frees yet, we had a planned Power Outage to work on the Grid before the Snow flies all day yesterday, so not sure how Gracie did yesterday. As I told her on Twitter though : It doesn’t matter. She’s already won just by making it back to a Skate America again. Oh...Does anyone know if a team....ANY Team....using the Soundtrack from Encanto for their Rhythm Dance this Season? Please tell me in a year where it’s a Latin Rhythm for the RD, there’s not no one skating to Encanto? It’s such a great Soundtrack & no, I’m not talking about a certain song either, but the Instrumental parts of the Soundtrack. It’s soooo good & just screams Ice Dance Program!!! Hell, it makes me want to Dance & I’ve got a bad knee & hip ATM that makes it impossible. 😁😁 Anyway...Thanks for reading that epic up there LOL!! Take Care!! 😊

Russia has 10X more male figure skaters than other countries, probably more male figure skaters than other countries combined=plenty of potential partners for pairs. Pair skating is also very expensive, (outside of Russia) with the female having to absorb the costs of the most sought after male partners in most countries. Not so in Russia where the fed invests in pairs and is now only joining partners with very strong singles abilities. (sbs triple lutzs and triple flips for example). As figure skating loses popularity, I don't see any hope for pairs outside of Russia. (In Russia, Isabeau would have been moved to pairs)

She sounded hoarse during their interviews and he looked sick after the FD, so that definitely would've impacted their performances. I think the music you keep calling Circles is actually called Experience (Circles was just a remix of Experience that Smart and Diaz used, but not the name of the song). Agree Ilia looks like an imitation Nathan, especially this free programme. The 4A is truely incredible, but the rest of the programme leaves me feeling flat. Kaori was a definite highlight for me this weekend! Also still love Roman despite the errors every flippin time - that second spin in the free actually gave me chills, and can't think of a time ever that a spin has done that!

Katia has the citizenship, has been representing Poland since she was a junior, speaks the language, has a bf and friends here, says it's her home as much as Russia is. I miss the JGP broadcasts! Better presentation, with re-watch capability, better analysis, and presenters who are silent during a performance. Tara and Johnny are wearing out their welcome. The constant loud yacking during a performance is just rude and spoils the story/mood the skaters work so hard to present. The US Figure skating is missing so many relatively inexpensive ways to bring figure skating to more viewers. Even a weekly Facebook/KZread show discussing the weekly events, features on athletes and education on the rules to clarify why things are scored a certain way. Oh wait, there is TSL! My Moments: 1Ilia Malinin’s 4A 2In pairs Deanna/Maxime over Knierim/Fraxier 3In Dance Hawayek/Baker over Chock/Bates. I did enjoy the 3rd place Canadian’s Pink Panther though Johnny was right about the need to improve the males footwork. 4Kaori skates. She was just on a different level. I was happy that Gracie Gold is getting stronger and Amber Glen was a pleasant surprise. On pairs, I wonder if all the female head injuries are making parents discourage going that route. Finding talented and strong male partners may also be an issue.

Why are people in the comments section so triggered that ilia calls himself the quad god? Maybe it’s the american and japanese culture that teaches people that you need to be overly humble to a point where at sometimes it becomes forced. Instead, when you are great at something, be confident about yourself and own it. That’s what he is doing, i mean he just landed a historical jump that nobody else in the world of figure skating has done before. He also has landed constistently all other quads in competition and posted on his instagram during his practice many quad-quad combos that i’ve not seen anyone do. His presentation is not the best and there any many aspects of his skating that aren’t polished but he doesn’t call himself the figure skating god, he calls himself the quad god and i don’t believe it’s arrogance at all considering what he is achieving already at 17.

Jonathan: I think the crowd at Skate America reflected the fact that skating fans have been released from the oppression of the Russian influence on skating. For the past couple of years, we all bought into the Russian propaganda that good skating consists of ultra c elements. We forgot why we loved skating. Having been released from that oppression, we are free to enjoy skating without just focusing on jumps, jumps, jumps.
