Shoma’s free skate just has moments of pure brilliance. I feel like it’s finally his time after so many years of being Mr. Silver medal. As much as I appreciate Ilia’s 4A, he can’t do what Shoma can as far as skating skills & artistry. I almost feel like this whole season is a Japanese skating renaissance. Without all the Russian drama in the way, we can truly focus on all the fantastic skaters they have & the insane depth they have in singles.

I love the Japanese team Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara. I am so relieved that Rikus former injury aloud them to start the season so well. They deserve all their wins , they work so hard 👏👏

I didn't think that would ever happen for her as she's so technically simple. Her jumps here were fantastic!

Also, to answer the question about Riku. She injured her left shoulder in July while performing in a Japanese ice show, and her and Ryuichi were unable to start training again until September. On a sweet note, Ryuichi actually picked their short program song "You'll Never Walk Alone" in dedication to Riku and her hard times with her injury over the summer 🥲

The judging in Ladies' event was so damn questionable for me. Young You's scores had me INFURIATED. It hurt my heart to see her face fall in the kiss and cry when seeing her freeskate scores. As happy as I was for Starr, I would have Young second over her. The judges were WAY too harsh in their marking of her, both technically and component wise.

That moment when you sit down at your first ever live skating event only to realize you’re in the middle of a ‘Canadian skating families’ section 😂 I was distracted through most of Rinka’s free skate because during the warm up KMT walked up and sat down in my row and started chatting with everyone around me, which then clued me in that I was sitting in the ‘parents of competitors/Olympians area’ apparently. And everyone was so friendly and lovely!! ☺️It’s super wild to be watching skating live for the first time though and trying to take it all in when skaters keep sitting near you such as KMT & Michael, Katelyn Osmond, Nam Nguyen, Veronique Mallet, Bruce Waddell, and Alexandra Paul & Mitchell Islam 🇨🇦🙌🏻 Definitely a memorable first live competition experience!

Actually, Dave's kind of not wrong because in the 1900s "velvet season" was like April - May. It was about a week or 3 when the Imperial fam went from St. Petersburg to the Crimea. It was a big deal for the nobility to go spend holiday on The Black Sea. They swapped fur for velvet clothes this time of year b/c the Crimea was warmer but still chilly. My father was Romanian and 60 when I was born, so he remembered when he was a kid in the early 30s, his parents taking the family and ferrying from Constanta to Crimea for a week, and then spending a week or 2 in Constanta at a resort by the famous _Cazinoul_ (Casino). The term "velvet season" had stopped referring to spring, and instead was about to early autumn by WWII. Sorry for the info dump. I just always found dad and grandmother's "Caucasian Riviera" stories interesting.

Daily motion worked for me. I did not mind the French, who only talked in-between (like Ted B.) They were quiet during the skate, unlike Tara and Johnny on their replay Sunday for women and men only. Lyndsay needs some coaching/new coaching help. She has developed a mental block about the second set of jumps causing her to pop every time and other jumps are under. She also looks both scared and sad. She seams stuck. Kana and Daisuka had a better skate at Denis Ten. The top men at SC were awesome. There are too many funeral dirges in all the disciplines! Judging was very strict esp. men's and women's. Chock and Bates routine does not work. The Pink Panther routine, with flaws, is a fun break in the gloom.

I only saw some programs bc ISU geo restrictions are weird and apply to countries that don’t have any other coverage (grrr) but I watched Rika’s program since I was curious how well or far she’s healed. And I thought, good that she left out those other jumps until she has that final MRI and go… and at the same time was wondering if she shouldn’t have let the GPS out. And then Trusova’s video popped up in my feed and the contrast was more striking than ever. These young girls with severe injuries just being out there as if it were nothing compared to a Kihira missing almost a whole season and still taking it slow. No wonder that system breaks them. And sure different injuries amount for different healing times but skating within a few weeks after broken legs or substantial hip surgeries, is comes off as wrong and crazy.

My ten cents worth on the Womens: I figured the gold was Rinka's to lose, and she did her job; so no surprises there. Starr Andrews getting the silver and finally some attention makes me happy, more so than Amber's performance at Skate America, if only because I have been hoping for four years for Starr to finally rise and show us what she can do. I've always liked how she moves to the music, it's what makes her stand out to me. I didn't get to see her in the K&C due to the previously mentioned CBC foul up. You Young has me worried. She's been with Mie Hamada for three years during which she has stagnated. She has not yet ever lived up to expectations, and I don't think these expectations are misplaced. Something's is just not working, and I have to think it is time to seriously consider changing coaches. Mao Shimida is clearly Hamada's star pupil, I wonder just how much attention Young is getting. Kim Minchae had another disaster SP and comeback FS at the Denis Ten Memorial to actually win gold there. I can't think of any other skater I've seen in the last few years with Minchae's potential, but her head is a mess. Hopefully her new coach can bring out what she is clearly capable of. Maddy is the only one of our Canadian women I can get excited about, and she has yet to follow up SP brilliance with a clean FS. I like her SP this season, her FS program is meh. She does intensity very well, she is an intense person, so the Black Swan works well for her.

As someone who has a soft spot for Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue I found myself so underwhelmed and bored by the free dance of G/P but couldn't find the words to describe exactly what it was that disappointed me so much. 'Junior-ish' hits the nail on the head, especially after what they did last season. They have so much more potential to do something mature and interesting than what they're doing right now. Maybe they should just go back to that program the rest of the season if it proves to be too difficult to completely start from scratch? Also US nationals is going to be an interesting competition for the the women. But something tells me they're really going to focus on pushing the 'Isabeau vs. Lindsay and then everybody else' narrative...but after this week I really think it's gonna be more than that tbh.

44:00 Fear / Gibson. Fabulous with a CAPITAL F. In terms of ice dance, Lewis is always the happiest guy (Keegan excepted) in the rink (just like Romain is always the sharpest dressed guy in any rink). But - F/G always have killer music choices (Lion King excepted), I would love to see them do something "serious" perhaps Arvo Part Spiegel im Spiegel or somesuch. Something Adagio in tempo. Something classical. They have two "interim" seasons after this season and before the next Olympic season. It would be a good time to experiment. Olympic season is not the time to try to change the formula, but this season, next season, and perhaps even the next are great for experimenting. It might work, perhaps Guillame could get involved with some choreography.

So is no one using Peacock anymore because of the replay removal? I personally still am, only because the VPN and Opera browser options give me a headache 😂 But I would prefer to use the ISU channel if it wasn’t geoblocked in America 😢

I still use it cuz it’s easier to cast on tv but had to resolve to opera+hdmi to tv when peacock went down and also using opera to catch the performances I missed

@@PeiwenTanbassoon821 how are you casting the Opera to your TV you said HDMI is this from a laptop or something? My Peacock hasn’t gone down luckily yet, but it is just the simplest without losing my mind with the VPN stuff lol. Even attempting Opera requires more effort than I would like since I’m assuming that would have to come from a computer

@@nicnoodles I used a HDMI cable to connect my laptop to the tv. It is quite the hassle and potential trip hazard but my family got to watch it together 😅

@@PeiwenTanbassoon821 I have one of those cables too, which I bought to mirror my MacBook onto my tv. Sadly, Opera is slow, and my laptop is circa 2011, so I get a very inconsistent feed. I'm working on casting Opera onto my TV now. It's still not optimal, but at least my phone is pretty new and state-of-the-art. 🙄

@@trylogic4084 I rarely use my laptop since you can do everything on your phone now a days! But for now I’m ok with Peacock, since I’m able to watch live and do not require replays. But when you do use Opera from laptop is it easy to change your location to watch KZread ISU channel? Sorry about it being slow that sucks :( I understand the struggle had a very old one myself for long time

@@TheSkatingLesson On my pc it asks for region and on my phone for a specific country. I chose Europe on my pc and it worked just fine for the ISU stream. On my phone I chose Netherlands, which others were saying worked, and it did for me too, but with a little lag.

Doing the Lord’s work thank you both 🙏 fortunately the Australian tv channel SBS was also streaming on their app but it’s a bit clunky- got there in the end and as Aus is 15 hours ahead, I got to watch it Sat/Sun morning live. 😊
