This and That: 2023 World Championships Ice Dance Recap w/ Renee Roca (Chock and Bates)

Спорт

Renee Roca joins us the break down the ice dance event at the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships. Madison Chock and Evan Bates became only the second American team to win gold at worlds. Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri won silver and Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier earned bronze. The results and scores surprised many and we break down what that happened. Meanwhile, Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson and Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Sørensen gained momentum, while Caroline Green and Michael Parsons appeared to stagnate. We break down all of our thoughts on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

I am still sorting out how I feel about the top 3. Felt that the scores were very inflated and not sure about the placement as both C/B and G/F had bobbles and the fall. But one thing I am completely clear on: No way Nik & Lolo should have been behind the British!! 🤦‍♀️

@@maryschreck2557 I hear you but C and B should NOT have had these ridiculous score fall or no fall. They are not PC. They are not DW They are not VM. They are not even Navka / Kostamarov. This is like, excuse the expression a few of the Italian teams who have won world titles (irony for our second place team) or D/S from france - good teams but not great. Honestly Hubbell and Donahoe were better than C and B but they just gave up/retired sooner. Yes, the scores were inflated especially for CB but i feel for the real programs of coincidentally the two Canadian teams and the Finnis teams. F/G from Brit and C B and the italians were overscored. Fear and Gibson should in now way been ahead of the Danadians.

Overall, the top level teams were over-scored. I do not have a problem with C/B winning but there is no way the scores should have been World Records, especially with a fall. Their skills are not P/C level. I agree that the Canadanes should have scored higher than the British and I enjoy both teams equally.

  • @isabellao18

I'm sure others have done this already, but I wanted to do the math to see... based on the math and personal opinion, the issue (at least for me) lies in C/B's free dance score and not in the overall outcome. That being said, even if they were given 9.5’s where they were actually given 9.75, their overall score would have been under a point less than the score they were given - would have been in the 133 range. But a season’s best in ice dance for a performance with a fall? No. Just no. But what I’m most upset by is FB/S - in what universe are they behind the British?! Especially when you look at the fact that in skating skills (!!) the British beat them in the free!

Fall in FD give them PC/VM scores. They Chock and Bates did the best with what they had but they literaly tried to write a story after the program had been built Trying to make it relevant. Trying to make it an art when it really was trying to sell a program that was not really art.

I don’t get the hate for the Reed/Ambrulevicius either. I enjoy them and think their placement was well deserved. Fournier Beaudry/Soerensen were the best team imo. I'm not a ice dance expert but I was very underwhelmed by the RD overall, unlike junior worlds. Was it because the pattern was missing? I don't know, but the senior RDs were very blah this season. There were some great skates but the judging was a huge turn-off in the event. Didn't care for C/B's programs this season but congrats to finally making it happen. Very happy for G/F even though I realize they're not the most exciting team for most. I love how invested Barbara is. Also, with all due respect to the um, older teams, I really am ready to see some younger teams in the spotlight. The Taschlers were incredible (don't love the FD though); happy to see them get 2 spots. Looking forward to seeing both them and Mrazeks next year.

In discussions of aesthetics, I'm somewhat dubious about marking Gilles/Poirier lower because of things like them not have long legs. That sort of innate physical feature shouldn't be a consideration in judging (this is also an issue I have with the over-emphasis on things like spiral sequences in singles, which inherently disadvantage skaters like Higuchi who have a stockier build).

I’m a Piper and Paul fan, but they didn’t sell Evita like they did at the beginning of the season. They also miss a lot of opportunities w their lifts, too much of Piper piggy back on Paul and lacking wow factor. I think the placements were correct (except for the Canadanes) but Chock/Bates’ score was absolutely outrageous.

I agree. I'm disappointed that there's this much under the table stuff going on with IAM. I love their Lovers From Outerspace skate, but the Fire and Air free dance was still great. The music killed it for me. Lots of inflated scores. I agree with Renee that it was absurd that so many had a season's best or personal best or like Chock and Bates getting a World Record. They've worked so hard, especially this season, and I feel like they deserved the wins at 4CCs, Worlds, and WTTFigure. I thought the RD score was a bit too much, but I enjoyed their RD more this year than last season's RD.

Is this based on some kind of scientific study, or an opinion you pulled out of your ass? David Bowie was and is iconic, I’m not sure where you got the idea he’s not widely recognizable. However, I’m not sure that’s his most iconic song, at least not to younger generations. It also depends on where you come from, ask a Brit who’s more iconic, Bowie or Prince. Let’s Dance was everywhere in the 80s, but it may not be as memorable as the Prince tracks Virtue/Moir used for their RD if you’re not GenX. But if you’re talking cultural impact, Bowie was huge, sorry. I’m not the biggest fan of Let’s Dance, and I was unsure about it early in the season. However, they really improved that dance and their performance of it. I’m not the biggest fan of the Latin theme because you see the same songs repeated a lot, and after like twenty Latin RDs that were often pretty generic my eyes were glazing over I ended up enjoying C/B a lot more than I expected. At least it was different.

C&B's FD is like a piece of abstract art. It's not for everyone. Without a clear storyline, some people just couldn't follow and appreciate the concept. Some even reject their FD because of it. There are reasons why the dance gradually slow down toward the end, and this guest obviously doesn't understand the structure/ arc of the program which is based on the interconnection between wind and fire. Instead of skating to a love song, they choose this rather poetic way to portrait their relationship as a couple on and off the ice.

I agree this year but nothing to do with their nationality - just how they skated this year. I would say give Italians top tech but about 6th or 7th for pcs choreo. I guess you can give them 3rd or 4th for skating skills. But the Danadians and P squared really skated cleanly and great programs - choreo/performance.

At this point I am starting to feel like your criticisms of Charlene's posture are subjective. I just don't see it. I think people have this lingering discomfort with seeing a dance team that breaks the height mould. Sometimes, it does take some conscious self-deprogramming to let go of these imposed patriarchal ideas of how a team "should" look. (This applies to any beauty standard, and to ourselves as well.) It's work that is worth doing. I recommend it.

Regarding the fall by Chock, people seem to have forgotten this isn't the first time a skater took a fall in an ice dance competition, but they still won. That happened at 2017 Worlds when Moir stumbled badly, putting a knee on the ice and two hands down to break a fall in the FD, but V&M still won. The argument used to justify V&M's win was the same as with C&B at 2023 Worlds: the disruption didn't happen on an element. That was certainly the case for C&B, but for V&M, they were coming out of an element when Moir's mishap occurred. Still, V&M went on to victory, so this isn't the first time something like this has happened. Some people said Moir didn't actually fall because his behind didn't hit the ice, but what's the difference between a fall and breaking what was about to become a bad fall? Both those situations break the flow and mar the presentation of the program. In the end, there was no deduction for V&M. In contrast, Moir fell flat on his back during the SD at the 2011 GPF. I believe that was during a step sequence. That time, V&M did receive a one point deduction and lost the competition. So, the unspoken rule seems to be that in order for a break in form, whether a fall or near-fall, to earn a deduction, it has to occur during an element, which I can't say I agree with.

Dance is interesting right now, because it's unclear who could win the Olympics in 2026. I would imagine that Guignard/Fabbri are going to stay for a home Olympics, and I agree with Renee, they are excellent technicians, but also, they lack the star power and generally the material, so I doubt they would win. Right now, I could see Lajoie/Lagha really rising in the next couple of years and be major contenders in 2026. Not a Fear/Gibson fan much, although admittedly they are fun, but they're already on the rise. Junior ice dance had some real superstars, so it'll be interesting to see how quickly those teams rise up in the senior ranks. I agree with Jonathan: Mrazek/Mrazkova are the ones to watch in seniors. This Worlds, in particular, really emphasized that this is the time for new teams to really rise up in the next year or so. Speaking of Worlds: Turkkila/Versluis have such a beautiful FD this season, shame about the twizzle error, but otherwise, it was so seamless. I also thought based solely on performances at Worlds, the Canadanes and the Taschlers had the skates of the night both in the RD and in the FD.

very dissatisfied this year with the ice dance event; both the rythym dance and free dance . Have watched ice dance side Bourne and kraatz, accepting the new scoring system. Everyone in the final flight of skaters in the freedance made some mistakes, but Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier had a beautiful clean skate and as I was watching the live event on the ISU figure skating channel, every one complained about the scores so ovinflated and all of us who had watched the livestream for the rythym dance the day before. Scores were ok for the top 5 teams. However we all agreed the a fall should be penalized at higher amount inthefree dance for chock and Bates. Some individuals actually we're so upset they left the chat. Everyone agreed the Piper and Paul should have placed silver or gold after there 2nd place after the rythym dance. 😊they should have won or a leastplaced second . Agreewith the fact the Renee is a true purist however she was ready to pick apart Piper and Paul. The did use the the entire rink and their program was the winning the grand prix. I have watched Renee Roca and she was a great skater. However I thought she really favored chock and Bates.if they recieved atruer rythym dance score as I felt their Free and rythym dance should not have been soo many points over everyone else. Both programs were so abstract and to me both had no real storyline. Sorry again, but I feel that having no canadian or American judges were on the panel. Scott and Tessa won 2 Olympic gold medals with both programs. The judges did not like the Carmen program therefore they really disliked the Carmen program throughout the season was seen as too dark and too gory at the end. But they came back and won the following year at the Olympics with Moulin Rouge.but piperand Paul have been overlooked when Scott and Tessa were skating even before that. I loved their last 2 years of skating with bronze medals won instead of a higher level. I truly believe ice dance has been too political for the past 10 years in my opinion. There are a number of program themes that if I never see them again it'll be too soon: Gershwin, Bolero, Swan Lake, Phantom of the Opera, Roxanne (Moulin Rouge tango), Gladiator, James Bond, Carmen, Zorro, and Schlinder's List. Laurence Fournier-Beaudry & Nikolaj Sørensen were BY FAR the best. They look like $10 millions, they are skating big, both of their programs are sensational, and they skated WONDERFULLY. To see them off the podium is effing REVOLTING! I love Madison and Evan but it didn't work for me at all: the programs, the fall, the music. Also love Piper & Paul but the cheesy Evita with all of the over-the-top moments that didn't work -- it's a huge NO for me (I LOVED their RD though). So, based on what we could actually see, the free dance ranking should have been: 1. Fournier-Beaudry/Sørensen, 2. Taschlerova/Taschler, 3. Guignard/Fabbri ATROCIOUS JUDGING! EVERYTHING seems to have been was fixed before the competition which made the whole competition filled with outrageous scores. Props to Green/Parsons for musicality, Reed/Ambrulevicius (or better, their choreographer) for the free dance, and to Kazakova/Revia for a huge improvement and the superb free dance.
