This and That: 2023 World Figure Skating Championships Preview & Russian Show Program Competition

Спорт

This week, the top skaters in the world head to Japan for the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships. We break down all of the events and predict whether Kaori Sakamoto, Mai Mihara or Loena Hendrickx will win gold. We analyze the chances of Shoma Uno, Ilia Malinin and Jason Brown. Then, we debate whether Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier will be able to defend their title against Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara, and whether Madison Chock and Evan Bates or Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier will finally win worlds. Plus, we break down the fever dream that was the Russian show program competition and break down our feelings on the latest edition of 'This and That'.

    Hi Dave! I love your channel so much. I became a figure skating fan about 3 years ago and around the same time I came to the US as an international student. At the beginning I could understand about 60% of what you are saying partially because I was relatively new to figure skating and partially because English is my second language. But now I understand everything in the video without the need for subtitles! Your channel not only provides information on figure skating that I’m fascinated about, it also improves my English! Thank you so much for doing this. I hope your channel will be more and more successful.

    If the junior ice dance extended lift thing is true, it's actually so upsetting for the british team. It may not matter for a big fed like Canada but here in the UK funding for sports is directly related to winning medals, and a WORLD medal in figure skating for GB could have significantly contributed to an increase in funding for our skaters :( It doesn't just affect Phebe and James but all our other young skaters who have so much potential (see Ash & Atl) but are restricted from getting there because of money.

    Kimmy Repond for a bronze medal ? Did Dave hit himself on his head recently? She finished 7th in Junior Worlds and has only scored over 190 once. A score of over 200 is a requirement for a podium spot with this field. There are three Japanese girls, three Koreans, two Americans, Loena and Anastasiia, all capable of scoring over this threshold. I think she has the potential to sneak into top 8 status. Personally, I think she gets underscored. But, a podium spot? Really?

    I think there's some kind of protocol re:calling another team being misscored. Didn't Bobrova/Soloviev pull this on Cappellini/Lanote at Europeans years ago? The Italians led after the short but the Russians watched them all year get sloppy and waited for them to hold this kind of freeform lifting section too long and got them called on an illegal lift? There was a deduction or something and the Russians ended up leading after the short.

It was cold but the elevation- ugh. How is she all of a sudden a head case? What implosion are they referring to? Where did they get that? Is it some type of insider thing? I have my doubts at this point. Her last short program was decent and she did not fall apart after it. No one is expecting the Americans to do much of anything at worlds. Where is the opinion on Amber? They skipped right over it.

    I've found the ladies field to be much more enjoyable this year! Kaori has two of my favorite programs ever with amazing goe & choreography, Loena is delivering a fun short program & is kicking the ice, Rika, Bradie & Mai coming back after disappointments last season, the rise of Isabeau, etc. Beyond Anna, Sasha, Alena & Liza, there weren't many personalities in the Russian ladies field that stood out to me, and I'm guessing that Liza would have been the only one competing internationally this season. Also, it's really interesting to see the mens field sort itself out -- I think it's very solid for the first year of the quad, with a ton of skaters who might medal. Pairs is certainly lacking without the Russians & Chinese, but I do love the skating skills of the Japanese (even if I am praying that they'll work with another choreographer next year). Lots of teams stuck around in dance, so it sort of feels like a half baked version of last quad, but the juniors have been amazing. Lajoie/Lagha, Kaganovskaya/Angelopol & Green/Parsons all really stood out to me as future stars last season, but have had different circumstances that have kept them from international relevance this season.

    There is not enough ISU money to pay for Yuzu to come back, they would go bankrupt lol. Can you imagine how much money he makes from his Prologue, GIFT and notte stellata shows, his Sekkisei and other endorsements and projects? Yeah, ISU could never. Besides, they had Yuzu until last year and in the past years they did everything to underscore him and make sure he turns his back to amateur skating. If they couldn't respect him when he was competing, would they respect him if he came back? Of course not. They would use him to prop up the new shiny US jumper and JSF would also continue to support only their darlings, Shoma or if Kagiyama returns, him. In the meantime, his fans are enjoying his incredibly high quality shows where he skates to 12 programs in 2 hours, or watch his KZread videos where he shows he still can skate to 5-quad programs including 4Lo, and have a good laugh about half empty competition arenas or shows where organisers can't even fill up a small arena with Chen, Uno or Kagiyama performing there (The Ice, last summer, to give you an example).

    Hi, I haven't been keeping up with the zagitova/medvedeva thing, is there really a media push to show alina as a "dunce" or the "dumb model who should shut up" ? I thought she had lots of fans. Why is the media on zhenya's side after calling her a traitor? Does the majority just see zhenya as the talent, the charisma, the star? I'm so confused. Please explain!

    It's not really a media push, she's just been doing a lot, a some of it was really cringey so it makes clickbaity headlines easy and all those websites need something to post. She still has a lot of fans who worship anything she does and will probably continue with her tv project cause somebody must love her at that tv channel. Zhenya seems to be better with media and the way she presents herself, at least to my personal taste, more sense of humour about the project she does, but still a lot of people ready to pick her apart for anything.

    I'm going to be lighting every candle for Kaori this week. I've been rooting for her all season and I know she's capable and ready. I do worry about the nerves, however, especially with this being a home worlds for her and she'll be defending her title. I also think it'd be good for the sport to have a back-to-back women's world champion. We haven't had one in a while. For the men I feel confident in Shoma's ability to deliver now more than ever. I think his free skate is stunning. I'm also looking forward to Jun-hwan, Kazuki, and Adam but more than anything I'm so so excited to see Jason. It really is the impossible dream to see him stand on the podium. Having Tracy tell Jason what a beautiful skater he is once he gets off the ice is always a highlight. For dance I feel like the judges may go with Chock & Bates but I'm rooting for Piper & Paul a bit more, I prefer their FD. If Zhenya is on the ice & skating, it’s always going to be special. Her Silver in the Olympics was a disgrace to the Art of figure skating. Stacking jumps goes against everything that makes FS beautiful & an art. Evegenia Medvedeva is in a class by herself. Her landings were so lite, like a butterfly. Zagitova was super athletic & she’s very beautiful, but she doesn’t have the complete package. Funny that I see more advertisements with Evegenia than Alaina, but that’s probably algorithms. Both girls hit home runs financially & I hope they both skate for many years. I really like ice dance too. It’s all personality & 10% athletic. Must be really smart & so precise to pull it off.

    At 19:44, the real answer is skating is boring now. I said two years ago that when Nathan Chen went back to school, the leftover men would go back to skating 2-3 quads in a LP with most of them toe loops and sals. The average men's total score would drop about 35 points to the low 280's with lots of falls, and that's what has happened. The men are skating like it's 2008 again. With the Russian ladies gone, the women are skating like it's 1998 again. Skaters who would never have made the podium are now winning gold medals on the Grand Prix circuit. Since Nathan went back to school, only Ilia has skated 5 clean quads in a LP once. With Nathan back to school, Hanyu retired and no rivalry happening between them, the Russians banned from competition, Kagiyama (who was supposed to create a new rivalry with Ilia) out with injury, and Papadakis & Cizeron gone and likely retiring, virtually ALL the energy was sucked out of figure skating at the end of the 21-22 season. At no other time in my decades of watching have I seen such an immense amount of talent leave the sport all at once. As such, I've had little interest in watching this year. Ilia should be much improved next year after his freshmen season this year. With Kagiyama back, those two should inject some real excitement into the sport as the next big rivalry. Regardless of how anyone feels about Russian politics, figure skating is diminished without the Russians competing. Since they have the top skaters in all the disciplines except the men, their absence has been deeply felt this season, even if people don't want to openly admit. Skating is better with the Russians in it, and I hope they're back next year. They have as little control over what their government does as the rest of us do over our governments, so I hope the athletes that weren't involved in doping are allowed back next season. When they do come back, they're going straight to the top of ladies, pairs, and dance, and that should add additional energy to next season.

  • @helenaprout1061

    @helenaprout1061

    Жыл бұрын

    I don't know how many of TSL's videos you've seen, but they've covered the history of doping in Russia quite extensively. Tamara Moskvina openly admitted that athletes doped decades ago, but just not at competitions. Dr Shvetsky has been developing xenon gas, which is a hard-to-detect but banned PED. Tuktamysheva admitted taking meldonium when it was legal, and Bobrova tested positive for it when it was banned (administered by Shvetsky). That's just the start of it- there is extensive evidence that many, if not all Russian athletes are doped up. Its not like other nations, where the individuals make a choice to break the rules. In Russia (as well as other dictatorships like it), the decision to cheat is made from the top, as it's a point of national pride that they have to win, no matter what. What I'm trying to say is, it's unlikely that any Russian athletes are truly clean (as in have never taken an illegal PED). The doctors are incredibly sophisticated at calculating washout periods- what happened with Valieva was a one-off error because they miscalculated.

    The figure skating sport has become boring to watch, not only because of the retirement of the big characters, but because the performance score is being devalued and the technical aspect inflated. The score is based almost solely on the number of quads performed, and almost nonexistent choreography (minus perhaps the Japanese). With the system like this, a big chunk of the soul is out of the sport, there’s no WOW factor anymore. And obviously Hanyu took it with him, since tens of thousands are fighting for tickets to his shows and ISU not being able to fill up small skating arenas. It’s just not exciting to watch anymore, with the Japanese perhaps being the exception. Shoma and Kagyama may not have Hanyu’s personality, but they both can deliver beautiful skating. Hanyu is just on another level, being perhaps not only the best skater in the history of the sport, his skills as an artist, communicator and storyteller are exceptional. So, it’s perhaps no wonder it feels kind of soulless and empty right now.

    To me the news of the week was that Joshua Farris is choreographing the next free program for Sihyeong Lee who is def ready to get into the last group. Russians: I was impressed by Totmianina/Marinin who used to skate like robots during their competitive days and here they were just terrific. Shcherbakova, Akateva, Vetlugin and Kaganovskaia/Angelopol were good too. The rest of it was just a cringetown -- with the WTF moment of the day being the finale of the Volosozhar/Trankov number. Worlds: Women: 1. Hendrickx, 2. Sakamoto, 3. Tennell (audacious prediction I know, and while I like Yelim Kim the most, it is not her year. Mihara should be relegated back to juniors IMO!), Men: 1. Uno, 2. Siao Him Fa, 3. Malinin, although I'd like to see Messing, Aymoz, Brown and -Lee- Hwa in the mix. Ice dance: 1. Chock/Bates, 2. Gilles/Poirier, 3. Guignard/Fabbri... It's politics, and Chock/Bates are, I guess, calling it quits after the Worlds. The best programs and the most impressive this year were Fournier-Baudry/Sorensen, Lopareva/Brissaud and Turkkila/Versluis, but most of all I expect Mrazkova and Mrazek to storm the ice dance competitions next season. Pairs: 1. 2. 3. couldn't care less. It's stupid they didn't let the 2nd Italian pair compete. They could only make the competition more appealing...
