This and That: The Bells of Moscow (Alexandra Trusova, Eteri Tutberidze, Evgeni Plushenko)

Спорт

This week, Eteri Tutberidze and Evgeni Plushenko reignited their feud with the alleged poaching of Alexandra Trusova. Or, Sasha Trusova was dissatisfied with the conditions and attention given at Sambo 70 and sought outside coaches. Coach Sergei Rozanov (Hot Sergei) will also be joining the staff of Plushenko's Ice Angels along with skaters Veronika Zhilina, Alena Zhilina and Egor Rukhin. Meanwhile, Tom Z was extra on social media as some rinks reopened. We break it all down in another edition of 'This and That'.

@@shelleyc853 And that's her problem. She can do this and that quad (Dave - see what I did there), but she can't land them all cleanly in one program. The new +5/-5-system which included lower base value for quads has not been kind to Trusova. And we can see that she has obviously not been working on her spins either, besides the PCS. If you do the math, she wouldn't have beaten a clean Shcherbakova at GP Final, Russian Nationals, Europeans, if she had landed 4 quads. So in retrospect, she never was the winner that she (and most of us all) anticipated.

  • @82gioccia

Dave, that was my point, if Trusova had got the deserved components back in the juniors, she wouldn’t have been delusional this first senior season. That was problem number 1. That’s what Eteti tried to make her work on, but Sasha thought she would have got away with 5 quads which only made it worse. I mean Eteri does not care who wins unless it’s one of her students.

If the judge panels do really give "Eteri bonus points", it'll be another tough deficit for Trusova to overcome (and I hope that's not the case but just postulation), but in any case, it was clear that things didn't progress the right way for Trusova in the Eteri camp, and a move was clearly needed. Surely her new camp must have someone to work on artistry, edge-work and improving GOE on elements. That being said, I think her step sequence with that: super athletic backward bend spread eagle glide, should score *way* higher than it ever did -- I mean, come on, show me who else can do that move? IMHO it is far more impressive than some regular, boring spin. Sure, compared to Aliona, Sasha's skating style looks much clumsier (by a lot), but I wouldn't say it quite as bad, nor put it down quite as much as I've heard/read, including here. Trusova is still near the top in *exciting skating* even if it isn't as much "art" as, say, a bit more like "Diamond League" athletics.

I always felt like, well, they sort of tried to fit their limited brand of choreo to Trusova's athletic style, but were still at the end of the day trying to squeeze the skater into the mold of their brand rather than adapting to her strengths. Trusova's problem is that she was a star too early. And that is not a good thing to do to a 13-year old. She thought that she was the biggest star ever and would rule seniors. It didn't happen. And we all know why. She just wasn't good enough. The new +5/-5-system effectively held her down. And her skating skills and PCS and spins? I feel sorry for the girl. She's been mislead.

There are lots of skaters who dominated juniors but didn't make it as seniors. Not saying that is Trusova. After all, she was never off the podium the whole season. But I don't think the star hype hurt her. Again, she did extremely well for someone in her first senior season. It's just that two other skaters did, too.

Watching this episode bit by bit. (It is Mother's Day, after all.) But just got to the part early on where you call me out. Thanks, I guess? 😂😂😂 On the topic of men in Sasha's life, can we take a step back and appreciate what an impressive power move this was by Sergei Rozanov? As of the beginning of this season, he was basically an unknown in the skating world. Then people started asking, "Who's that quiet guy overseeing Eteri's novices at competitions?" Thus, the Hot Sergei nickname was born. And now, pretty much out of nowhere, he's positioned himself to be one of the most influential coaches in Russia, and thus all of skating. (I mean, we'll see who actually coaches Sasha and Veronika, but like you guys, I'm skeptical it's going to be Plushenko at the rink day in and day out.) Here's a photo of Rozanov as a kid with two other powerful male coaching figures, Mishin and Raf...instagram.com/p/BCoEHq9ocFm. Makes you wonder whether he's been quietly taking notes and plotting this all along? 😊

First of all, love the Russian accents. And the shade 😁 I wonder if Medvedeva continuing may be a sensible thing. True, she is very unlikely to win at Europeans or Worlds. But she keeps her name out there for a few more years and gets Nike and other opportunities that perhaps are more likely to disappear when you stop competing. So it's competing to keep up her profile and endorsements rather than competing for medals?

I guess sensible to her and sensible to everyone else are probably two different things. If she did the "sensible" thing and retired last year, she would always wonder if she could have done more. Right now I feel like she is living her best life by her own standards and can live with "failing" as long as she did everything she could.

Orser willing to help her but he state that, it didn't mean she would win every competition along the way to the Olympics. She have to trust their system and take it step by step... and now, we can see that she still make it to the podium. I hope Zagitova would dare to make big decision for her career too.

So=Valieva, Kostornaia plus one. Which one? Scherbakova, Trusova, Zagitova, Medvedeva, Usacheva, and so many others? I say Trusova, but also want to see Anna get a chance but with current IOC rule no go. So Medvedeva? Zagitova? Old skool news... sorry time is over unless they sign up w/ a new flag.

@TheSkatingLesson Let's see if you can guess who these two skaters are, and which competition: Skater #1 Narrowly lost out to skater #2. Skater #1 has quads and trips, but the choreo and artistry are much weaker than skater #2. The same is true about PCS and GOE of elements. Particularly as several of the difficult jumps had glaring issues. Furthermore, spins are slow and weak as are step sequences, although there was one pretty good step sequence. Skater #2 Does not have a single quad, but the trip jumps are well executed with high GOE, as is the rest of the program, with very nice choreo and smooth stepwork, good spins. Overall, great artistic program, even if lacking any quads. Answer: Well, it's actually a trick question because there are four skaters, two battle pairs which are: Skater #1 Evgeni Plushenko Skater #2 Evan Lysacek at Vancouver Olympics 2010 Skater #1 Alexandra Trusova Skater #2 Aliona Kostornaia at every senior contest The same description applies to both pairs. Now, given that both Plushenko and Trusova are basically jumping beans, I think it's a perfect match -- if only Plushenko can get someone else to do the choreo and artistic work for Trusova rather than himself or his vision, if it doesn't include better choreo than his own or Trusova's recent programs. As for athletic jumping, he has to be the rigght guy to understand both: how that is what Trusova is all about, and how: both he and she have lost comps narrowly due to having not much more in the program.

They’re primed to learn and you just have to put in the work. His flexibility is amazing, but also a little sad to see his dad pushing him into a position while he’s whining and crying about it. He doesn’t have any passion or real skills other than doing moves he’s been told to do, so being able to do doubles because he’s been trained up to that point but looking like Bambi on ice is like 15 year olds doing quads but having no edges or artistry-it’s just trained through hard work and repetition. If you watch his Instagram, he actually has a personality when he’s playing with his puppy or showing the camera plants in his garden, but he’s totally robotic on ice. So we’ll see, but it just doesn’t look like skating is something he loves.
