This and That: Rika Kihira, Alexei Yagudin and Adam Rippon

Спорт

This week, Rika Kihira announced that she will be moving to The Cricket Club in July to train with Brian Orser. Alexei Yagudin made offensive posts on instagram and Adam Rippon replied by making a charitable donation in his name. Meanwhile, Roman Sadovsky continues to charm the masses on KZread. We break it all down during the latest edition of 'This and That'.

    Hope Rika can get her quads, however I loved her programs this last season. Both really eclectic choice of musicand wonderful nuanced choreography. Beautifully skated Definitely were not a mess !! Which is a rather lazy form of criticism!! Basically insulting!! You really need to find constructive arguments, Rika has a graceful and subtle style. She is possibly shy, however I don't think that's a bad thing. There is a beautiful quality ,some people prefer subtleness than in your face OTT facial expressions that add absolutely nothing! Being sassy isn't necessarily a good thing. It's not reflective of Rika. There is a fine balance between bringing someone out of their shell and not creating an over dramatic expression. I hope she doesn't end up with poor music and choreography choices.However I do think it will be a great chance to train along side Yuzuru and I wish her every success. She is a determined young lady, like Trusova both want to keep learning progressing and are not afraid to take opportunities to move forward. Hope it works out for them both. Different but both extremely talented skaters.

    3 months ago when the world was shutting down, I spent a Sunday falling down the rabbit hole of skating videos on YT, which led me to TSL. Since then, TSL has been my escape. As a life-long skating fan - I was 9 during the Lake Placid games and that's when I fell in love with the sport - it's been a thrill to watch competitions and performances from decades ago. Then there's all the skating dish and drama that I get to hear every Sunday with This and That or in the chatroom during a video premiere. Like the real dish on Gracie Gold you shared last night in contrast to the sanitized mass media versions of the story. Thanks for all of it.

    Yagudin is cancelled. I nominate Adam Rippon and Ashley Wagner for NBC commentators. I think they'd do a much better job than Tara and Johnny seeing as how they competed under IJS and actually understand the system. T&J still call it "this new scoring system" despite the fact it's been around for 15 years. Plus, Ashley and Adam are very honest and open. Adam won't sit there and pretend like he had quads and Ashley will tell you her lutz edge was on a prayer. I feel like both are way more knowledgeable about the sport and would bring much needed constructive insightful commentary to the sport. I like the move to Orser for Rika. I actually thought Rika's programs were strong last season--though the costumes were kinda gross. She's always completely covered and the outfits are too busy. Less is more. Someone send her to Satoko's designer please... I hope Orser can bring Rika out of her shell. She's too introverted when she skates. That SP from last season was so energetic and different but she failed to sell it. Give that same program to Satoko or even Wakaba and I bet they'd rock the hell out of it. Rika needs to bring that energy and connection. If she can do that plus add quads to her 3As (which are basically money at this point), I think she'd give the Russians a real run for their money.

Having two commentators who are fresh off of the competitive scene and have competed against many of the skaters in the field today would be much more insightful than what we have now.

    I agree with you guys on so many points here. Yagudin was definitely a way better skater than Plushenko (mr. platinum medal) back in the day. However, since then, yagudin has shown himself to be a terrible human being while plushenko stays on brand as an ego maniac who knows nothing about actual skating skills. Don’t love either of them, but plushenko is much more tolerable and he married a fascinating person that delivers the skating drama we need in fantastic Russian style. Never thought I would see the day I would prefer plushenko to yagudin but when he says the kinds of things he’s been saying, he makes it easy. And Tara and Johnny, liked them as skaters, was mildly amused when they first started as commentators, but it’s been time to move on for a couple years now. Adam actually does sound like he might be really good at it. Let him have a chance, NBC. Also, agree that rika made a smart move here although it’s strange the way these former hamada girls change coaches. Just add a new coach to the team and phase the old one out lol. Whatever makes them feel better or is deemed culturally appropriate I suppose. This will hopefully help her artistically and to get those quads.

A good call, as she has everything already, just needs that consistency and finishing touch that was given to Yuna, Javier and Yuzuru. However, who knows if Canada is going to open the borders and allow for their restrictions to be eased? I'm all for Rika going for that Olympic gold medal.

    It is one of the great contradictions. Non skaters would always verbalize to me their assumptions that every male skater was gay. I explained the irony of descrimination against openly gay male skaters. Rudy Galindo was a great example of a skater that was undermarked due to this. I remember when Brian Orser was outed in an article and he feared for his career. In conclusion I think homophobia comes from the personal or cultural circumstances/ upbringing of a person.

    Because ISU was established by conservative Europeans 120+years ago and for many decades it was the sport of entertainment, pretty ladies and manly men. It was the sport of white people, too so there is also the racial question. There are still many prejudices against Asians or black skaters too. And of course if a skater is gay. If someone is out, judges don't like that. Many judge still think this conservative way, as many fans (mostly in Europe and USA) too. Ladies skating has been more popular than men's skating for that reason.

    Yet another great TSL: London UK so this was morning coffee. I normally just post a sincere"thank you" but today, I feel compelled to write something longer. JKR: her snide remarks were directed at the phrase "people who menstruate"; her comment: "didn't we have a word for that? Womben etc." was either willfully ignorant or deliberately insulting. Of course, not all people who menstruate identify as female. Her further (4,000 word?) follow up "justification" disclosed she'd been the subject of domestic violence, physical, emotional and psychological abuse in her first marriage. The domestic abuse is horrific. However, I'm not sure how this translates into her views on trans issues. To link abuse with trans issues in this manner, is abhorrent. She's not "just" a children's writer (she's written adult literature), she's not even "just" a writer (like saying Oprah is "just" a talk show host/TV personality). She knows her platform, her powerful voice. It is sad to see people one admires (admired) espousing very abusive and phobic rhetorical tropes. Alexei Yagudin and Scott Hamilton. I remember Hamilton's world and Olympic medals, (I was 11 in '84) showmanship, speed-skater costumes, lack of height and "look" were commented on. There was awareness around John Curry's orientation ('76 Olympic Gold), speculation around Robin Cousins ('80 Olympic Gold) , Brian Orser, Rob McCall (Tracy Wilson's ice dance partner) etc. Hamilton clearly wanted distance between "them" and "him". Shocking even for the 1980s. As for Yagudin (a once great skater), reported drunkenness, lunging at women, racist remarks and homophobia. All symptoms of a much deeper problem? But we are 2020. Racism, "plantation weddings", transphobia, homophobia: "how are they all still a "thing""? Yet here we are. For me, it is shocking, yet sadly unsurprising. Yagudin, Natalia Bestemianova, Kostamarov - all these comments make me wonder whether Papadakis/Cizeron will actually be "allowed" to win Gold in '22? Weir, Rippon and Cizeron are brave where just being oneself ought not even ever have to be considered brave. Peace, love, hold an edge, look sexy and.... *never* have a "plantation wedding".

I was advised by my coach who ironically was also gay that it would be better if my boyfriend didn't come to watch me skate in the Olympics as the association wouldn't like it! I don’t think it’s complicated at all. If you are XX you compete with/against women if you are XY you compete with/against men. The sexes are segregated in sports for a reason let’s not forget that. And that reason is equality it’s self. As a female athlete myself. If I had to compete against a male, that makes me not have equal rights. That’s the opposite of equality and isn’t equality what we want ? ?? (my perspective on JK Rowing.) She’s mentioned that she cares for Trans people and doesn’t hate them. She seems to just not like it when trans-women say they are female/ a woman. So it seems that she’s just trying to make a point on “I am a woman” and you are a “trans-woman” we are different and we will always will be. And that’s okay. We are not the same so stop acting like it because it’s hurtful for someone to just say “I am a female” but you don’t know what it’s like to be one and you never will. That’s a fact, and people won’t accept it and then they go call anyone who says it transphobic. But they’re not. I will never know what’s it’s like to be a trans-women. And you will never know what it’s like to be a female. So stop pretending we are the same. That’s just reality. (This being my own opinion as well) I found JK Rowing to have the same she just didn’t explain it the way she should have.

    I'm a biological scientist. It's not as simple as XX XY (though I understand you are referring to biological males and biological females). No sex and gender are not the same thing, but the existence of trans people does NOT invalidate cis people (which is what JKR was implying). Also what you're saying about being female.... I'm sorry but you're saying that womanhood is all about what you have between your legs, which is in itself highly misogynistic!

  • @user-xm2cg2lf2i

    @user-xm2cg2lf2i

    4 жыл бұрын

    Helena Prout I have a very limited knowledge of biology and I would appreciate if you explained a bit about determination of biological sex. I was taught that XX and XY is a norm, while 45X, 47XX etc. are genetic disorders hence rare medical conditions. It’s not the first time I see someone saying having XX/XY chromosomes doesn’t equal being of a certain biological sex and I’m confused.

  • @helenaprout1061

    @helenaprout1061

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@user-xm2cg2lf2i i think this might end up being an essay, sorry in advance. Xx and XY is just an oversimplification that we are taught in school. Kinda like how we're also taught that an atom has the nucleus in the middle and electrons orbiting it in nice neat little circles. Schools do this to make things simpler but they neglect to say that these simplifications arent always accurate. Most biological women do have XX chromosomes. But there are many with fully functioning female reproductive organs that have XY. I cant be bothered to find articles but if you search up studies on gender, sex and chromosomes you'll see that it isnt all about what chromosomes you've got because it's the expression of DNA on the chromosomes that brings about traits. This is sort of like how a brown eyed person with one blue eyed parent has a gene for blue eyes, but it is not expressed. Similar idea for sex (again I have simplified this because genetics is quite complex). I think the most important thing is that yes, biological males inherently have a higher muscle percentage than women etc, but the existence of trans women does not invalidate cis women just because they have different organs (and vice versa with men). In the case of sports it's a difficult one because biological men have different attributes to biological women, but that doesnt mean we should disrespect or invalidate non- cisgender people. I cant remember her name but there was a biologically female athlete who had to take testosterone repressing drugs because she naturally has extremely high testosterone levels, despite being born female and never doping. Things like this are rare but they do happen- this is because sex isnt one or the other. Yes most people fall into either the male or female category, but biology isnt nice and neat and easy. Its bloody complicated- this applies to sex as well! On another note, women who took part in the suffragette movement were campaigning for women's rights because having a uterus etc doesnt make us lesser than men in any way. They also wanted to show that women are not simply baby-makers and that we are human beings that should be treated the same as men. Now my problem with JKR is that she has said highly offensive things about trans people and she has supported anti-trans activists. She clearly is a TERF (trans exclusionary radical feminist) which is an ideology that is actually rooted in misogyny. (If you didnt know, TERFS think that you're only a woman if you're a biological woman, which is 1) factually incorrect as shown by many gender studies, 2) saying that infertile/intersex women arent women and 3) reducing all women down to their reproductive organs. This is why JKRs ideology is so f**ked up. Sorry for the essay, hope this makes sense.

    I've always been and I'll always be a Yagudin fan of his competitive career. No matter how many times Winter has been performed, even awfully performed in shows, it's my favorite skating program ever done, the main example that this sport can produce pieces of art and that skating judging is all bs: Itwas the sp at 2002 Olympics the one that deserved all the the 6s in the panel. That said, every time that I've heard him comment on anything, it was clear for me that he is not the brightest person and that the world won´t miss anything if he never talks again in public, about anything, including skating. He has just proved that again in a very disgusting way. It's great what Adam did and it's ok to point at Yagudin and make it clear that the skating community (or at least the most loud part of it) doesn´t tolerate homophobia. On the other hand, I find speculations about his reasons for those awful comments out of place, whatever the reason, it's his problem.

    Can't agree with comments on Rika's last 2 programs. The choice of musics and the choreography were so sharp and avant-garde! I think Tom Dickson helps her create a revolutionary androgynous image in the lady's field just like what Nathen did in the male's with his new-cool-and-free-style. Rika is one of the few top female skaters out there that really has a sense of dance, who can employ all her body to implement the designs of dance movements rather than just doing pretty poses or keeping the arm lines look elegant. Though it is true that she needs to polish that and her acting skills( facial expressions, emotions), but even without, she already way surpasses the others.

Of course, I doubt most guys give much of a thought to the theme of their weddings. But maybe they should. In all honesty that's probably not surprising--the town I grew up in is small and white and pretty racist, so... If TSL says they're doing a "KZread-friendly" version of their Brian/Brian judging, it's probably because they're afraid of me, LOL. Because if they give me any of that "It shouldn't have been that close" crap, as Tootie used to say in "The Facts of Life," they're gonna be in troubleeeeee… OK, so the line about Barbara Roles's '80s glasses having their own Instagram is killing me.

    Yagudin didn’t speak about same sex love at all. He hates people who call women “menstruators”, that’s what this whole situation was about.

    Another great episode guys, and Dave, it's ok to go ahead and skate on a workday. I'm very good at enabling people to do the things they want to do.

    OMG. Glad I'm not the only one who didn't understand what JKR was saying. It was like trying to muddle through the last HP book. I actually had to watch a trans person's video explaining TERF, etc.

    I also needed clarification. I still don't get it. There are such enormously pressing issues in the world right now, WTF is JKR's problem and WTF is everyone's problem who is spending the time battling this? Exhausting.

    JKR was pointing out the sexism (and homophobia) in some trans activism. That people would call that transphobic indicates they don't truly support women's or gay rights.

    Oh Yagudin... he's become so weird with time. And certainly the atmosphere in Russia doesn't help. You know we're getting our constitution changed on the 1st of July, and there'll be a mention of marriage as only the union of a man and a woman? And there's been a disgusting yet hilarious propaganda video about gays... And Yagudin is politically very mainstream I believe, as most figure skaters. Pluschenko publicly supported those constitution changes as well. There's a lot and none of it is pleasant.

    I wish I could be true about Alexei, walking away from him might do which is not solved the problem instead of slapping his pretty face knowing my teenage years are about to be in ruins of the truth.
