I was at the grand prix in sheffield this weekend and I have to say, whilst probably being biased as it's the only competition I've been to, the atmosphere was probably the best of all the GPs so far! I think as an audience we were so grateful to just have a chance to access international figure skating in the UK, that we were here to appreciate everyone! Huge support for all the skaters, and reactions to Deniss, Mai and the home GB skaters was just incredible. The response for Lilah and Lewis was insane, I was sat just in front of Lewis' mum and dad in the stands and they looked near to tears at the reaction. I know there were some issues technically for those watching live, but the actual competition ran really smoothly and seemed to be such good feedback from skaters - I hope GB are given the opportunity for more grand prixs/competitions in the future!

Well, I watched it on TV from the US, and you all were an amazing, amazing audience! It was a joy to watch and to see how well the skaters were all treated. Thank you so much!
I was right next to the kiss and cry during Deniss’s performance and as soon as that last jump was landed you could feel the crowd just waiting to jump out of their seats - it was so magical! Also: the fans really were great this weekend and the cameras really didn’t pick up how energized the building was. There were flags everywhere for every skater, and we didn’t just get excited for our own country’s skaters. I hope we get another one of these, or at least that the success of this event will lead to bigger crowds to other British skating events. I had a fabulous time.

I believe Sheffield are getting ECs in 2024? Or maybe 2026 I can't remember (think the former). Likely(hoepfully) it will be in Sheffield Arena since there is more notice this time, as it was in 2012, and is a much larger and more suitable venue!
Young you said in her post skate interview that her dad passed away during the olympics. Mai Mihara is my moment of the week and my moment of the entire season so far! 💜
Wow. I am loving your balance of respect and irreverence at the same time. The discussion about pairs was eye opening.
From watching Deniss skating his free live: at least 50% of the audience engagement and the energy he gave off actually came from… Lambiel at the boards! He was living through the program with Denis with SUCH PASSION, it was very contagious. He is the one who got the crowd going with his clapping and cheering. It’s almost an unfair advantage having him at the boards! :))

Lambiel was all of us in that moment!! It must be so encouraging as a skater to get that kind of reaction from your coach!
Worthy of noting is that Young You competed sick, apparently she had fever and all, yet she performed that strongly in the free after "bombing" the short. Also no wonder she lost some of her jumps during off-season, she lost her father during the Olympics all of a sudden. She's been through a lot lately. But I really believe she will get her stride back soon, after all she's young (pun intended) and super talented with that 3A.

I think a lot of Roman’s confidence was sapped when he was growing so fast he grew out of his boots in one month and lost his jumps. When he was small he was supposed to be a phenom. That must mess with your head! We see Stephen Gogolev going through it but he’s not competed much. Roman kept competing through it and maybe it traumatized him. 😢
I think you are spot on about Roman. I get the feeling that every time he messes up, he sees it more as "Oops, that one got away from me, darn, sometimes the cards go your way and sometimes they don't" as opposed to acknowledging that there's an actual psychological issue to address because this is a pattern.

It would be interesting to hear the Korean and Japanese perspective on country swapping. It is only a North American and European thing to game the system. If Asian skaters can’t draw on international family roots like NA or Euro why not allow them some flexibility to choose other federations. Let them skate for Australia or Singapore, etc if they have some loose ties to those countries (lived in Brazil for a semester as a foreign exchange student. Just something). She recently mentioned that it has been hard to motivate herself to get back into competing while she is going through the process of grieving but that she's getting there. And I think the reason, she didn't "present" as well as she normally does in the FP was because she had a high fever (even considered withdrawing because of it) so she was very focused on getting through the jumps. On a sidenote: Sonja Hilmer actually just confirmed on her Instagram that she will be at Nationals 😊

Thanks guys another fantastic episode - catching up on skating I missed because of work. As a Brit really wanted to get up to Sheffield (from London) but couldn’t- I thought the crowd was so vocal and supportive - but that rink could do with renovating and what is it with the Grand Prix and bad camera angles this year?
FYI. Sonja Hilmer did qualify for Nationals this year. They took the next two best scores, after the top two at Sectionals. Those scores were: 1) Lindsay Wang - 163 2) Sonja Hilmer - 157 😝
Regarding Roman, I find Skate Canada doesn’t support single skaters well. Maybe it’s the coaches, because Ice Dancers and Pairs seem to do well. There’s a huge amount of pressure to be perfect and it got in the way for Kurt Browning (his apology at in Lillehammer) Elvis Stoyko, Patrick Chan (the haunted look he had in Sochi!), Gabby Daleman… All getting in their own heads. I think it’s a broader problem. They seem to have the whole nation expecting perfection as a cultural identity. I loved what Ravi Wallia did with Kaetlyn Osmond. Liz Manning won silver in Calgary with support from a sports psychologist.
@ColonelGreen
Жыл бұрын
What exactly is the basis for the idea that Canada has some unique pressure to be clean performers? That's the case in every country and for every athlete who has aspirations to medal. Obviously Chan looked haunted in Sochi, he realized he had just blown his chance at being an Olympic champion. Roman's issues are his own, not something the federation is responsible for.
Sectionals was always intense for me great memories though but the “no practice” between SP and FS never made sense since like you said one extra hour won’t make you learn a new jump for the free skate. 😅
Am I the only one who doesnt get the hype abt Fear & Gibson? Their packaging is a little too out there & Lilah makes Madison Chock look like the Queen of deep edges in comparison.
Jonathan’s living room is no disappointment to what I imagined 😊.
I agree that Deniss deserved more...
I have a question relating to your interesting topic of different attitudes to (stupid) rules. The beginning of Mai's SP music was not audible for a couple of seconds and she had to start with a later note, resulting in a loss of bonus for her combination jump in the second half of the program. I guess it was due to a technical issue/ human error at the venue rather than a careless music cut by Mai's team, as she has had several domestic competitions while the GP had at least two other noticeable incidents with music (Free Dance and Women Medal Ceremony). She accepted with a good grace that these things do happen despite a very tight point difference with Isabeau. Would/ Could you appeal under such circumstance?
appreciate the therapy talk and addressing that from a heartfelt place
Daniel needs a glowup if he’a going to be at the top. Better styling and a haircut to make him look more mature and make his kind of wild technique look a little more purposeful and put together. Side note: Italy has a great mens field right now.
I think Roman used to be more “here is my positive take” in the past vlogs which was a bit baffling. I mean after the Olympics, I expected a very devastating vlog, but that didn’t happen. He has definitely a self-esteem defense mechanism that sort of helps him go on but does nothing in the long run to improve things. Hope this is a turning point since he seems very empty and a bit more honest. I think it's really the time to hire a mental coach or sport psychologists or he's never getting out of this. Btw is mental that thee is no sport psychologist hired by the team to help with these issues. On Daniel Grassl's side, he knows exactly who he is and what he needs to change. He said in multiple interviews that he needs to work on his skating skills and change the way he moves. His main good qualities are consistency are stability, but when I look at Matteo or Roman I see skaters of completely different quality. He definitely knows that and he's trying his best to change. Not sure this current setup is actually working for him since I saw him much less stable than last season.

I also don’t know why Sofia Akatieva is attempting so many “ultra c” elements when she clearly can’t do them reliably right now. Of course, it’s Eteri’s group, so there you go. But honestly, try the 3A once in the long & don’t go for the quads until they are more stable. Just asking for injury. All of the “ultra c” in the long should have been downgraded if scored correctly. Of course, the Eteri bonus was what was keeping her on the podium with 3 falls…

Two things I noticed live about her that I didn't see through the TV: one, her ice coverage is minimal, but two, she has a real special something that draws you in. In practice you wouldn't look twice at her, but then when the music comes on in front of the audience, she just exudes musicality and feeling. She's just got a natural gift. That being said, I do still think she's overscored. And I don't know why that lutz edge is not called? I haven't seen it in slo-mo but it always looks flat at best to me.

Not many spots for China- barely any Chinese competitors the past few years. No opportunity climb up the ranks and earn GP spots. No Chinese skaters at Worlds, so no seeded skaters either. All of the Chinese skaters who had spots (apart from the ice dancers) withdrew due to injury. I feel really bad for Peng/Jin as they could've dominated this season :(
Russian pair skaters are switching countries RN - I see for example that Alexander Korovin has a new partner and they will come here to competer for Philippines 😅
I love pairs it’s one of my favorites. I like pairs, Dance, Men and women.
If Isabeau lived in Russia they would have moved her to pairs at 12 or 13. I know in the US they won't move her to pairs, but this is a shame-with the right partner she would be competition for the Russian pairs (assuming they are ever allowed back).

I like them, they're so classy&and have great lines but for me they're not a balanced team. I see his personality on the ice when she is just like an invisible partner who's skating with Anthony. I've always had the same impression with Chock/Bates as an ice dance couple, but the other way round- it was 80% Madison and 20% of her partner who's doing the lifts.
In response to watching women who skate pairs Dave and Jonathan, I will watch Tai Babilonia any day. She will ALWAYS be remembered as a great skater and champion.
I'm so happy! Georgia got a historical medal at Gran Prix!!!
Mao and The Bells of Moscow 🔥 🔥 🔥
I need to say that I hope Chock and Bates are able to work through their issues with their programs, because there's a lot of competition right now that's doing very well. There could be a Worlds where they do not get a medal at all.
Do you know what does my head in with IJS pairs? In the other team discipline (dance) each competitor is judged individually in SyTw, OFT, steps etc. Why aren't pairs judged individually for jumps and solo spins (etc)? It seems to me that pairs are disproportionately downgraded when one has an error. OMG - I always wondered why Jenny didn't go into pairs, she would have been brilliant! Pairs Women are the bravest of all skaters on the ice.
Think partly w how quickly Roman posted a video was surprising like you guys said but he did decide not to do media straight after and so at least he gave it a few hours to process before he made any public comments Also I think skaters wouldn’t want their public perception to be bad for being negative about a bad skate
Does anyone know how I can watch the ladies free skate? I didn’t want to wake up at 5:15 am 🤣
I disagree with Jonathan that Roman has good jump technique and a consistent 4S. He’s a chronic underrotator. He’s lucky they only gave him a q for that second 4S. That was a generous call.
Roman needs to decide if he actually wants to win because the status quo of not even trying to do better is just wasting everyone’s time (judges, coaches, etc). I actually turned the competition off before Roman’s free because I was that confident the podium had already been decided. If he actually wants to win, he needs to get psychological help & change coaches. He needs coaches that aren’t enablers of this, someone who will hold him accountable & help him get it together. He also needs to stop vlogging for awhile. If he doesn’t want to actually try, make skating a hobby & do something else with his life.

I agree; I've always felt that his media presence was more important to him than actually doing well in competitions. I felt that somewhat about Gabby Daleman and Amber Glenn for awhile too, but I think both of those two have started to focus more on the skating now.

I hate Alexa's and Brandon's music cut in the free, which is so disappointing for me because I love them and I love that song and was so looking forward to loving this program. But it's boring in the middle and that ending is ridiculous - like someone just hit "stop" on a tape player. (Sounds like a Basic Skills competition program from the 90s and early 2000s before music editing software was mainstream.) The actual ending of the song is so powerful, with those slower lighter notes...I so wish they would use that.
1:03:09 Jonathan 🤣 I’m sorry that was funny
The "My Sweet and Tender Beast" waltz piece on it's own is music I quite like, it works well enough for a SP anyway. But the version with the singer Isabeau is using, and Maddie Schizas used last year I find completely awful! Especially for a FS!!!
Roman needs new coaching. He needs to focus less on the videos and more on mental strength.
Danny O'Shea is a really good pair skater, right? What is he doing with these 15 and 16 year old girls? I feel like it's almost an insult to him or something. Whatever happened to Jessica Calalang? I thought it was Brian that wanted to stop skating.

The age gap is really no big deal. He’s very, very lucky to have found a partner this late in his career who he “clicks” with. And, she’s very, very lucky to be able to skate with him! Win-win! Also, his partner will be 18 in December, not15 or 16. It’s close to impossible to find “older” pairs women who are also a good match both in physical ability and temperament. Deanna Stellato is truly one in hundreds of millions. Jessica Calalang is wonderful, but perhaps she and Danny are not good match for each other. We are dealing with people, not machines. It’s a delicate process.

Yeah, he's consistently overmarked in PCS. For example at Skate America he was just a couple points under Matteo Rizzo in PCS yet their skating skills are night and day.
I don't think any womens singles skater who under rotates (most of them) can excel in pairs. Pairs is a whole nother beast, with core strength, shoulder strength, daring, and a little bit of craziness (to tolerate being lifted above the guys head and thrown a cough length) needed.

You are so right! It takes a certain type of personality and resiliency to skate pairs! It’s so dangerous. You must have mutual trust and respect with your partner and coaches. Also, the woman has to be okay with being touched all over her body all of the time. That’s too much for some people.

Wait, WHAAT? That's the dumbest rule I've ever heard! It should be up to the skater and coaches to do an extra practice at a nearby rink if they'd like! Like you said, it won't change anything at that point, but some skaters might need an extra practice to loosen up, but it might be worse for others, so it should be up to the coach and skater. It isn't like it wouldn't be open to all to practice at another rink who want to. 🤷♀️ Is this a new rule? What about those American Olympic skaters at Sochi and PyeongChang who trained in other countries?
@SunflowerCat333
Жыл бұрын
The rule is in place at USA sectionals and nationals for good reason. (It doesn’t apply at international competitions like the Olympics.) Most of the time when there is a big USA competition in town, there is not enough nearby, affordable ice time at other rinks for all of the competitors to get equal access. At USA sectionals and nationals, there are seniors, juniors, novice, juvenile all competing at same event. That’s a ton of skaters! Also, it becomes about who has the money to pay for ice time or who has connections at a rink they don’t belong to. The money thing favors the wealthier skaters. The connections thing can strongly favor the athletes from the host area.

@@etherealtb6021 I think there are still practice restrictions once the skater’s actual event starts for international and Olympic competitions. But, I don’t know the details.
The practice rink rule is stupid and didn't exist in my day-Organizers want skaters to attend only "Official" practices where the judges for the event can sit and 'prejudge' the skaters. In my day many of us would avoid the "cattle call" and arrange practice time at another, nearby rink. (Thereby also avoiding the circus atmosphere of the venue).
Russian girls that would nearly guaranteed get a medal at ISU events: Valieva, Akatieva, Zinina, Petrosian, Samodelkina, Trusova, Yametova, Sinitsyna, Tuktamysheva, Muravieva (that's 10; definitely enough to get at least gold and silver at all the ISU GPs), plus a bunch of injured skaters that'll hopefully be fully restored next season: Shcherbakova, Usacheva, Khromykh, Kostornaia... Akatievas worst skate of her life yesterday with 3 falls would still be gold at ISU GPs without Kaori I guess. Sending just 2-3 of them to each stage of the Russian GP and filling the slots with placeholder no-names feels just like ISU events as well (and is nearly as dull with a very clear top 3). And no country (not even Russia) has the amount of pairs and dancers required to create a competitive GP series on their own (some events have just 3 starting pairs, so everyone gets a medal? yay). The men are at least so inconsistent that it's competitive by default, some days you get Peturu Gumenyu, other times it's the floor camera.

I should clarify I still do hope that Gracie and Roman get it together and you do wish an athlete does it on their own terms including retirement. But both of them have been at it for a while including Daleman. They don't intentionally struggle and crash and burn. Gracie has resources besides even co aching - I understand she has family support and opportunities because of her past as a top international skater. I fear Roman may end up like Nam Nguyen who showed more promise being I believe a world junior champion. Ironically the Canadian men really grow - their last three great hopes Roman, Nam and Gogo all grew exponentially. We aren't talking just a bit of puberty but their height/limbs grew to extraordinary proportions for single skaters. I am sure if they knew or had the magic wand they would "win". Mind you the competition is not the highest right now so both Roman and Gracie are relevant in their home country.
