THE RINGS OF POWER 1x1 "A Shadow of the Past REACTION & REVIEW! | The Lord of The Rings

Ойын-сауық

Nearly 21 years after the release of the first Lord of the Rings movie directed by Peter Jackson, we are invited back to Middle Earth with Amazon Prime Video's latest offering "The Rings of Power". This epic takes place thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and follows the adventures of Galadriel and Elrond as they try to stop Sauron (yeah...we kinda know how that goes lol). The show is beautiful to look at and we can't wait to see more. Good thing we don't have to wait long for the second episode! Perhaps there will be a Gandalf cameo? Who knows...fingers crossed!

Well... Galadriel is the one who once went "In place of a Dark Lord you would have a Queen! Not dark but beautiful and terrible as the Dawn! Treacherous as the Seas! Stronger than the foundations of the Earth! All shall love me and despair!" So yeah... She can be intense and scary.

She was also the one who immediately afterwards said "I pass the test. I shall diminish and go into the West and remain Galadriel." Long before that, however, as a young elleth, she bore witness to the wars of Beleriand (just east of Middle-Earth over the Blue Mountains, and now sunken underneath the waves) and its drowning at the final War of Wrath, which saw the defeat of Morgoth Bauglir and his greatest armies, and ended the First Age and Beleriand itself. She bore witness to the fall of the Father of Dragons, Ancalagon the Black (the most enormous dragon anyone has ever conceived of, whose wingspan would shadow modern-day Manhattan Island from just over the Empire State Building.) and the breaking of Thangorodrim, Morgoth's fortress in Angband.

Much of the initial production, including those sweeping aerial scenic shots, were filmed in New Zealand. They initially intended to do most, if not all of the shooting (including studio/sound stages) in New Zealand but production kept getting shut down due to COVID, so they moved to the UK to finish a lot of the sound stage work (I guess the UK wasn't as strict about the pandemic at the time). Not sure what the producers with decide going forward with future seasons. Some of those shots looked like they used several of the same locations from Peter Jackson's films.

Galadriel is related to Elrond. Her father (Finarfin) is the brother of Elron'd's great-great-grandfather (Fingolfin, who challenged Morgoth to single combat and died) Most of their kin died in the First Age, so they're most of the family either of them has at this point (all of Galadriel's siblings are dead, most of Elrond's ancestors are dead, and his parents are in space. No, really.). Galadriel's backstory was changed by Tolkien a LOT after he created her, but he established that as a kid, being the one girl among a bunch of boys, she basically learned the same skills as them - hunting, swimming, wrestling, etc. She becomes more of a sorceress after she gets one of the Elven Rings of Power and learns to use it. (Pippin in the Lord of the Rings is a Brandybuck; he is Frodo's cousin as Frodo's mom was a Brandybuck, IIRC. I think Pippin was related to Bilbo through his Mom and related through marriage to Frodo.)

Elves do not die. Their souls are forever tied to the fate of Arda (Earth). If their corporeal forms die, their spirits go to the Halls of Mandos, a limbo-like place where they unload all their emotional baggage and trauma and are rebound to new life. In a sense, it's like respawning in a video game. They can age in some visible ways. When the Fellowship meets Galadriel, they do notice that although she has the visage of a beautiful Elf maid, something about her eyes make her look ancient, and a little scary. Cirdan, the shipright, is SUPER old and is the only Elf we know about who has a beard. Weariness and trauma can also age them a bit. Although they are much stronger and durable than other races, they do suffer trauma. They have to learn to live with it though, cause they cannot truly die.

I like this razor-sharp ferocity of Galadriel - this bold choice not to make her easily accessible to us seems carefully considered - on the one hand, the tone of this central character can be a constant reminder of the deadly cosmic stakes - on the other hand, this detachment we feel from her can help keep the whole series within an epic register - epics are meant to be viewed from a distance - think of figures like Achilles, Arjuna, Rostam, Sita - we mere mortals aren’t meant to be on intimate terms w such characters - and also, as Jaby says, this severity is consistent w Blanchett’s tone, but bringing a new angle to it - the more mortal characters can provide the easier identification point for us - I think this contrast is important here 32:00 - the “prologue” - the focus of this series is the Akallabeth, and apparently the Silmarillion itself is serving as the “prologue” - the previous First Age lasted almost 15,000 years, and the destruction of the Trees of Valinor I think happens within its final millennium - the Second Age of the series “present” itself lasts about 3,500 years - I don’t know how far the series will compress this timespan for the sake of dramatic momentum 26:00 - your surprise that Galadriel has warrior skills - but why wouldn’t she? We saw Elrond and Arwen in action in LOTR, in Fellowship - even though we usually encounter them in civilian “repose” - I feel they’ve long established this premise of how lethal they all are, even physically - the surprise here is like Vader’s moment in Rogue One - we all realized how rarely we’d actually seen him in action Achara 23:00 - “and are those Hobbitses?” Samwise response - “Can’t you hear yourself? Don’t you know who you sound like?” lol

Just a side bite here on the galardrial not having a stratch comment. Believe it or not that is pretty much how all the " high elves" were after 3000 years of fighting Morgoth. They had to fight dragons the size of a mountain, gigantic wearwolves, tons of Balrogs etc. So yah an Itty bitty troll is literally nothing to the elves that lived through that time. It can even be said that, based on the crazy feats of her fellow elves, galadrial is actually kind of weak in comparison, since she didn't join in some of the earlier battles. Just for perspective I guess.

I had a similar moment upon seeing Galadriel as a warrior when she's so firmly entrenched in my head as this Elven sorceress queen, but then I remembered that Elrond himself was portrayed in the movies as a sort of warrior sorcerer, and that Gandalf, the quintessential wizard, has no problem wielding a sword and hacking orcs to bits both in the movies and books, which in turn reminded me of how they made Arwen more similar to her father and she fights the Nazgul with sword and spells in the movies instead of just being Aragaorn's Elven girlfriend, so I shouldn't really be bothered about Galadriel being a warrior when she was young, even if it's not exactly canon. Hell, it bothered me more to see Elrond and Galadriel be all chummy to the point where it kind of seems they may have a thing for each other, when she's actually his mother in law and Arwen's grandmother.

The big thing to remember is that magic in lotr is not the same as other fantasy. It's far more esoteric and is about granting boons or curses, bolstering or corrupting. Gandalf using his magic and the power of the ring he had came a cross as inspiring the men of Gondor and Rohan, and causing orcs to flee. But it's not flinging fire balls.

The thing is Galadriel being a warrior is actually pretty much canon. If you go look into the wider lore outside the lotr books there is actually quite a lot to support the idea that Galadriel was a warrior from the name her mother gave her 'Nerwen' = Man-maiden, descriptions of her athletic feats and Tolkien literally calling her as an Amazon, a term he specifically defines as meaning warrior women and shieldmaidens.

So what? Just appreciate what is good and ignore what you don't like. The shadow of mordor games created a "spin-off" plot that has nothing to do with what is in the books, but it was still enjoyable to imagine a different storyline based on the known history of the books. Just learn to separate things, original VS adaptations. Because I'm sure you'll see many more adaptations in your lifetime, and some will be bad, so you better get used to it. Their existence doesn't detract in any way from the original work.

@@ramithair2846 no adaptation changes anything about the source material. As far as I know the books are still there as they always were. Now people who complain about an adaptation are not only whiners, but also sound like kids that can't separate the original from the adaptations. They are different things and should be treated as such. Your theoretical perception of what makes a good or bad adaptation is subjective and selective. Do you hate the movies for making the army of the dead arrive at pelennor to save the day in the most Deus ex machina way possible? I bet not, and I don't either, despite it changing a big part of the storyline - I'd rather have seen the knights of Dol Amroth instead, but it is what it is. Deal with it. Now, Amazon is a greedy company as all others, but they couldn't get the rights to the Silmarillion, only to the LOTR books. So they had two options, either do nothing with those rights, since the main story was already explored, or try to stitch together what the appendices had, the best way they could. And I'm happy they did because at the very least I can see the locations which are very well done, the character designs which are very well done, the music is okay, and even some new additions I though were interesting, such as the green ad human settlements in the region soon to become Mordor - it makes sense from a realistic standpoint and engaging to see what Mordor could have been if it was not tainted. So there is a lot to appreciate even if you don't like or agree with all the changes. People are just finding reasons to be either haters and/or racists and calling themselves "purists" even though a lot of events were changed or ommited from the LOTR and Hobbit movies, but I don't remember anyone complaining about that. I have 3 different LOTR tattoos and having a black elf or a woman dwarf without beard is honestly the least of my concerns. And anyone who disagrees is wrong. Bye!

@@voidgods you got really butthurt there buddy. Rings of power has some of the most beautiful set designs in any show. But that's to be expected, 60m$ per episode. The issue is not here. Nor is it about " not being truthfull to the source material" cuz most adaptations are not. Take the witcher for example. Really like the show yet they changed a lot of things. The issue you just can't or don't want to see is in the show it self. The main character galadriel has a badly written arc. Her personality doesn't fit the perspective she would realistically have had as a 3000+ yo elf. The decisions made by gil galad are inconsistent with what was shown literally in the beginning of the episode. And his reasoning is that galadriel might cause the very thing she seeks to stop. Which also makes no sense because if sauron is there. Galadriel finding him or signs of his existence ( which she did but EVERYONE in the show, even Galadriel herself ignores) would somehow cause more harm than good?. And Galadriel, one of the wisest beings on middle eaeth. Decides to jump in a sea so large it took the numenorean fleet 39 days to "almost" cross, without food or any other realistic explanation . The story presented in the show itself is bad. There is many plotholes that they think will be covered up by the admittedly amazing look world they created. But no matter how beautiful it looks. It needs substance to support it. And as of now, the substance that supports it is made out of shit.

My favorite part was when Galadriel held up her light saber and shouted "By the power of Greyskull! I am... not a man" then proceeded to decapitate her foe to gain their power. Very emotionally moving scene.

Tolkien elves are immortal. Immune to sickess, time and weather. They can be killed or die of sorrow. Even when killed they respawn in Valinor. Luthien is only elf who truly died. Elves exist as long Arda (world) exist.

And you might say that Luthien did not truly die, she just choose the Gift of Men. And what the fate of Men is has still not been revealed; remember what the messengers of the Valar told the men of Numenor: "The love of Arda was planted in your hearts by Iluvatar, and He does not plant to no purpose. But what that purpose may be may not be revealed for many lives of Men, and to you it will be revealed, and not to the Valar".

In some of the letters that Tolkien left, he mentions Galadriel’s characteristics a little more and describes her as being of Amazon disposition who had led an army into battle. So, yea, she was pretty badass then and even when we see her as the Galadriel we later know in LOTR. She was essentially the Wonder Woman of middle earth.

In the other room the troll was jumping off every wall at lightning speed killing 3 elves in an instant and in front of Galadriel he was bobbing his head back and forth with the hands next to his body like a school boy as if he lost the ability to even move his hands to defend himself. Given the budget, they could've made the fight a lot more exciting and shown off Galadriel's supposed crazy skills. So please give me a break.
