I used to be in Car Management at NS. Unless your RR is listed on the route on the waybill, then your railroad will not be included in the line haul rate. This is the case for many short lines. In your situation you would only get a switching fee. This is totally normal. Don’t worry! The rate should include enough there to cover the switching fee. Tim

Yes Brian, my two cents would be that you were given the toad rate runaround. This leaves out the “last mile” at each end. When your new customers comes on line, make sure they receive all of their quotes with enough in it to pay you as well.

@@eastterminalrailway5975 I don't understand Tim's message, but maybe you can arrange the shipping and loading/unloading services for the customers on your tracks. You could invoice them for a total price, and then list out where money is spent. In other words, the customers pay through you, and not through class 1 or regional railroads.

Brian: As that engine is driving a hydraulic pump, it can be mounted anywhere on that MOW car. All it takes is plumbing it in with hoses, which you will have to do anyway. 2. have you considered mounting the hydraulic pump on one MOW vehicle with quick disconnect hoses, so you could use the hydraulic power on different implements? Saves buying extra engines. - sort of like adding different attachments to a farm tractor or skid steer. With a welder, junkyard parts and flanged wheels, you can do anything. Thanks for the video. Brian - as a business guy, I can say I love your thought adding value "plus" to the customer (we unload your skids and put them away, or, we load your scrap into railcars for you). It is absolutely the right line of thought. You should charge a small nominal fee for switching/shifting/last mile that covers your costs plus 10% and focus heavily on adding those value-add services which will always have a higher profit margin. You have potential to make some healthy income if you keep thinking creatively!

Happy Father's Day, Brian! Tim (Seaboard Central) hit the nail on the head with the way the billing works, and that's how I understand it as well. I wouldn't sweat it; switch fees should get it done in your case. As for the value-added idea, that sounds good and you may get some bites on that, but be sure you navigate the liability exposures and requirements there. Companies can get real funny about non-employees coming on their turf when it comes to liability. Just a heads-up on that one, brother. Keep up the good work!

Rail is looking better. I said back when you first bought this yard that I thought buying the old metal company that was there would be a great idea and that you could do scrap metal gondola loading there. I highly recommend that you clear the land at the back behind where the tracks end. You own that square property that is all woods right now I would put an ad on Nextdoor and offer the wood to anyone who wants to come and cut down the trees They have easy access from the backside where the street runs right along side the back of the property. Get that cleared out and look for abandoned rails, like NJ has lines that are abandoned, and get the rail, the switches, the ties, plates, anything else that you can. And add a terminal to the end of the track. You can put in 4 switches and 90 degree turns and park cars on them. Adding a 2nd track is a good idea. You can have a track that you park the cars that are all the same thing so you can pull the first one out as they are needed And the original track you can park the different cars on each switch spur Or you could use that second track to move cars off the original track and put them on the second track to get to the car you need.

@@chuckdean4887 I saw a video on here, I don't know where in NJ it is. I think it was northern NJ. The track had the old signals and switches, but it was definitely abandoned. There were damaged sections. If I could find the link I would post it, but I would bet there are other lines like this where track is just sitting there and will eventually be ripped up. I saw another video in NJ also, where the track was abandoned. It ran along a canal, parallel to it Here in Eastern Pennsylvania there was track from Coopersburg to Hellertown, but that was ripped out when they put in the bike path. They left the control boxes and the old Reading Railroad signals Not sure why they left them. Maybe the town didn't want to spend the money to remove them. But even the signals could be of use. Putting in a signal for the siding to the main I will keep an eye out and post the links the next time I see a video like that

Brian - I work in rail pricing for a large boxcar shipper. Do not be deterred by the comment about not sharing in line haul (freight) revenue. There are different types of carriers when it comes to rating (haulage, handling, switch, etc). Given your position in the route, you'd be best positioned as a switch carrier that charges a blanket switch fee per loaded car. That still leaves you room to charge for additional intraplant moves and other accesorials. Class 1s will have the option to include your fee in their line haul quote. It'll just be a seperate item on the bill. Wish you the best.

Brian, I have studied RR'S for 30 years, did Transportation Management for the Army for 21 years, did civillian RR-ing, I have a History Degree.... a very varied background.... I see that you have opportunities for this tracks and the immediate customers but you could offer team track services weather you do it or the customer does (transloading). You could perhaps lure customers to the RR via offering services class ones don't. Go to potential customers and ask "Why don't they use RR?" I have often heard if it is a regional grocery store or home improvement store that they never know what car is coming to the interchange when. The class 1 wasn't responsive so shortline decided to be. Shortline tried to make everyone a member of sales. Give them a business card to hand to a plant manager to call RR Office to open line. Anyways best of luck!

I see your concerns. Reminds me back in late 90’s conrail sold off 15 miles of rail to a 3rd party as rail was deteriorating and conrail didn’t want to invest in the rail. There was about 5-6 customers on this line and we were a scrap yard at time receiving 8-12 gondola cars a week. From my understanding the third party rail company that purchased rail was going to charge $400 per car delivery fee and then additional $400 for pickup fee per car. Let’s say owner of scrap yard ceased all rail cars and trucked everything to mills for over couple years until they renegotiated pricing.

Personally, I would not lose any sleep over charging CSX or NS as they are a monopoly and charge just about whatever they want. The important thing is to make sure your rr earns a fair price for it's service. At some point, the big rr abandoned what is now your rr, so, they knew that to service the industries on your rr, they would have to pay. End of story, have a nice day. Glad to see someone donated an engine.

You can come at this two ways: 1. You can look into the possibility of billing the regional. I’m not sure what rules there might be that could prevent that, but it would be beneficial if the charges could be incorporated into the final bill from the larger carriers. 2. Your idea that you could load/unload is a great idea. Additionally, you can put companies on a 1-year “by car” payment, but roll over to an annual average where the company pays a set fee based on the previous year’s traffic. For example, the bakery brought in 20 cars per month worth of raw material and shipped out 30 per month of completed product, you’d charge them for handling 50 cars per month the next year, with a clause that they would pay $x.00 more per car if it exceeds 1.5 times the average. Just a thought. As I’ve said before, thanks for sharing your journey with us!

Dang ETR Nation has some darned nice folks in it from swarming you all to tackle a recalcitrant small engine to boxing up a brand new crate motor laying around and shipping it off to help a feller out. The added value of providing an unload service could be the way to go in making those additional fees a little more easy to swallow and you might be right with current conditions the time might be right for the ETR to shine. Happy Fathers Day! Been here from day #1, it gets better and better. Been in the aviation industry for 40 years, and billing gets complicated quickly. Sub and sub-sub contracted repairs (NDI shop to welder to painter then back for installation for example) allows for very small margins, but the amount of thru-put keeps it going. Without any RR experience at all, I’d suggest very detailed billing a lot of A La Carte items. In my world, the bean counters at Corporate will skip right down to the bottom line as to total amount due. Keep going! Heck, I’d pony up some free time if in the area for sure to help out & am rooting for you.

I have thought some more about the ETRR "concept".... Your derailment and door repair business have you set up to know many area Rail-served industries in your area. You have your Trackmobile. These Industries may not be ETRR customers but you could potentially provide "special services" such as moving the cars arround as desired by the company without a carmover. Many lines both Class 1 and Regional are served M, W, F or Tu, Th...This leaves many potential customers when choosing between Rail or Truck, taking Truck as it is much more flexible HOWEVER, if a non ETRR customer can be convinced to "come back to railroad" if the ETRR could service them with a "roving Trackmobile" You might not earn as much as having everything on your line but it would build your network. One thing you could possibly do is get Eastern Terminal cars to collect per Diem

What you say about the STB and Tariffs is correct. $500/car/move is the norm. That said, there is opportunities to negotiate deals with your partner Class I railroad to share in their business. The Class 1 railroad becomes your customer. They pay you separate from their tariff. There are opportunities to take in cars for maintenance and make them available to the Class I for use after repairs are made. The car owner pays for the repairs. You might want to negotiate trackage rights on the ETR in return for local pickup and set off of cars on the main line. That is often done with a negotiated arrangement with the Class 1.

Here's something to consider: what method of billing is better for ETR's cash flow? Will ETR get paid faster by the shipping/receiving customer or by the hauling railroad? Since ETR is local and will have a closer relationship with the customer than they will with CSX/NS, it might be beneficial for ETR to not have to rely on the Big Railroad bureaucracy to process payment. It's easier to knock on the customer's door to ask, "Where's my money?"

While watching trucking videos I found out that warehouse companies use independent trailer loaders and unloaders called Lumpers. The truck driver, who has no ties to the freight, are responsible to pay those lumpers to load or unload their trailer, they are then reimbursed by the broker who gave them that load. If people are paying for that service, I see no reason why they wouldn't pay for you to load or unload a railcar.

G & W and other short lines are making $$$ some how? What do they bill for and to whom? In my area a short line hauls lumber from 3 mills plus a quarry or two down to a transfer point where a class 1 carrier takes over. They also store cars on their unused spurs.

  • @wilfred8326
    @wilfred83262 жыл бұрын

Hmmm..... I am not sure what to tell you except for what you already said, offer the ETR Spur/Trackage et all to on and off line customers for "value added services" that they otherwise might not get as the ETR would be serving 10 on and off-line customers? So if one of these customers calls 📞 you can give them better customer service than a Class 1 with 10× or more per representative. In my neck of the woods, Massachusetts, I live a few towns away from what has been billed as "The Largest Fishing Port in the USA" (New Bedford MA)..... New Bedford gets reefers, of Fish, from Alaska! Those cars reefers leave empty! I would find a way to offer "Steam Cleaning of the Reefers" then send out East Coast Fish (we also have a large Cranberry Industry, the empty cars that might have fish guts could be cleaned and send frozen Berries out).... loads in, loads out....

Happy Father's Day. I believe you are over thinking the billing. Right now, people know that the economy has went to crap and everyone is going to do everything they can to lower the costs. With fuel costs as high as they are, truckers are now resorting to shutting down their trucks and NS, CSX are actually shutting down power if it has to wait more than a couple of hours. As you develop your business plan and marketing strategies, you just need to worry about the big number and if that is something the that customer can pay for. You cannot run any business in the red for very long, that's for sure. I have never been in the railroad industry or transportation industry. But I have been in Construction most of my adult life. I find that if you talk to your customers, talk to your suppliers, talk with the guys sub-contracting, you can find that medium for everyone. Remember, it's a circle: manufacture, ship, receive, stock, sale, repeat. If at anytime, that process is broken, the manufacturer cannot move product, the shippers cannot ship and the customer cannot purchase, the system collapses and everyone loses. So your job is to create that system, build a team and somehow be the glue that keeps everyone talking so there are no surprises.

Two questions from a novice in the uk. Is there an option for a 'team track'? And two. I'm assuming the ETR loco would be used for switching. This would need to be position on it own track somewhere between the mainline and any cars on ETR to be allowed to do it's work. Chris S.London

Hey there from Sin City 👋. On the topic of business. That is discouraging, I would expect private rail owners to potentially be included on the freight bill, ESPECIALLY being last mile. Otherwise, you are incurring maintenance cost on your rail ( theoretically) and any Class of railroad gets their dollar plum. I know y'all will do fine. We will be here, and help any way we can.

I sort oflike the storage, transloadand repair aspects of the ETR. Keep smiling,it will be OK.

Is ETR connected to a short line or the NS or CSX? Is the ETR officially a RR? Have you talked with the NS, CSX, and the short line, if your lead comes off of a short line, about sharing in the billing. Anything coming from or to ETR would be new business that has never been builder before. My understanding is once you become a RR you can establish your own billing rates / tariffs.

ok, since you have to fix the hydraulic pump in the first place, i see no advantage to using the new engine on the tie remover. it's backasswards and i think the honda just mounts up better. since the pump is on the same side as the way they originally made the thing the honda is the better choice. in my opinion. now then, why can't a person make a frame and or a work flat etc, and mount the new engine to that, course' your gonna need a new pump now, but use that to make a tie hammer rig. just cause it's not the best choice for the project at hand, don't mean it won't be the berries on the next project. the work flat could also carry the spikes and various tools and the water cooler, don't forget the saftey cone! if you make your own set up for driving spikes, you can design the thing with the new engine in mind. wish i knew what to tell you about getting paid for the freight. but, if you can get any revenue at all, from switching spotting whatever, at least you'll get a pay check. as for unloading the cars for the customer in their factory, i advise against that. too much liability involved. i do like the idea of the scrap transfer idea. i actually like that a lot. i think you're on to something there. you might even parlay that into other transfer opportunities. as long as you can get the trucks in and out, easily and quickly, assuming you've got 2 or 3 in line waiting to off load etc, then i'd say you're golden to transfer various goods and so on. if it's an absolute cluster to get a truck in and in position and back out etc, it'll be too big a pain in the arse to get anythign done. you could incorporate a "dock" to unload trucks on to by using a fork lift. then load a box car waiting on the other side . if you had to store the goods while waiting on the box car to arrive, it wouldn't cost that much to make a roof on one end etc. i wish i was there to help. keep on keepin' on my friend.

Oh, Lord 'a Mercy! Please Brian, PLEASE lift correctly! And I know other people will say the same thing, because we've been there, done that, have the scars and didn't even get the dang t-shirt! At 65 I'd expect a few aches and pains... but two surgeries (and another big one pending) later I am one torn up lad. Yes, back treatments have improved greatly over the last few years, but once you screw up your back, well, there ain't no going back. You like throwing the grandkids into the air? You like hauling a load of firewood into the house? You like fixing the roof on your house (and saving big $$$$). Not to be a nagger, just the voice of experience. Earned the hard way...got the scars and medical bills to show for it! I know us guys like to think we're superman, it's how we're wired. But without taking care of our bodies we WILL reap what we've sown... and it ain't good! Lecture over, go back to work. Do good work. Do hard work. But do work smartly. Your grandkids will thank us all when we're still able to throw them up AND catch them! Keep on chuggin'! And Highball the Rollby. The Ghost of the SP

Welcome to the business side of railroads. There is a steep learning curve in front of you; don't be disheartened by this. The ETR will have to create a business model that takes into account all the rules and regulations, as well as the special needs and unique abilities of the ETR. Developing that sort of model is how you'll come to fully understand the niche your railroad can survive in...and you will survive in it, and thrive in it. Gal. 6:9
