i think getting a locomotive shed would be a good idea, mainly to protect 2021 from more vandals, but it would also give you a better spot to work on the engine in a cleaner and safer area to work on the engine away from the elements.

Be careful with all that paint dust. If it is original paint, it may be LEAD paint. Use PPE! Those two 30+ ton "Clevises" are actually called Shackles. On the brake ratchet, if it's steel, weld it. If it's cast iron, braze it. Cast Iron does not weld well. Thanks for the video. Jon

Seeing you do the cab cleaning reminded me of my daily to-do list on my motors before I started my runs. Like you, I swept out the cab and the walk ways, took the Windex to the windows inside and out, checked the oil and water levels, checked the brake shoes and adjusted them if needed, checked sand in the sand boxes and added if needed, checked lights, bell, radio, gauges, and checked air brakes for leakage, and revved up the motors to blow out excess carbon build-up in the stacks especially in the dry season. Just a few of the things I did to insure a safe and trouble free run. Keep safe and as for the broom you borrowed from the missus, the secret's safe with me.

FYI. There is a way to make a turnbuckle using two right hand threads. One clevis end has a fine thread pitch and the other end has a course thread pitch. For example: if there was a 3/4-10 thread one one end of the stud and a 3/4-20 thread on the other end, if the stud was turned 10 rotations there would be a 1/2 inch deference in the length of the linkage. It is not as efficient as a "true" turnbuckle but it does work. It would have worked great for the fine tuning you were doing on the linkage.

I can't stand shopping either. The only holiday tradition I still have is stocking up on stuff before Halloween and not stepping foot in a store again till after new years. I used to go shopping when absolutely needed in the middle of the night but that is no longer an option since everything closes early these days. So I just don't go. I do however celebrate groundhogs day every year by having one for dinner. Phil says 6 more weeks of winter and since I have gotten almost a foot here today I may believe him.

Another great video that captures the spirit of the Christmas Season. Thanks for this. Over 2800 people have viewed this already and enjoying the good will it shares with all of us. ETR leads by example and shows us to keep attempting to accomplish all the things that ensure success. Even when things go wrong hard work will overcome. I expect if we had an ETR shipping address you would be loaded down with switch brooms, break gear, cameras and anything else you would mention. Maybe the wrong idea but just a way for us to share our joy and concern for ETR with you. Christmas isn't about the material world but we often like to share with people (and Railways) at this time of year. Certainly the ETR doesn't need to become the fancy Empire Builder but a baby born in a manger has shown us that great ideas can come from humble origins. Thanks ETR. Enjoying the progress. Loved the video.

Buy a foot long to 18" long piece of bar stock. Face and center drill the ends . Turn down both ends to clamp in an indexing head with a chuck. Bolted to either a horizontal or vertical mill. Cut the full length pawls. The back in the lathe to cut the shoulder, bore the center, cut that gear off and dh the rest in that order. Put the others on ebay. Depending if the pawl locking face is 90 degrees or less. Depends how to cut it. Clean any used gear completely and have an automotive engine rebuilder magnaflux the gear. Take your coupler pins also to know if those are cracked before you start tugging on cars since you dont have a round house to turn the 50 tonner

The question of whether or not to weld the ratchet stop for the manual brakes depends or what it is made of and how it was made, if it is a cast part, welding is not going to be easy, it can be done, but you have to heat the part up to the proper temperature before welding and let it cool slowly otherwise it could crack. Generally you would put it in an oven to heat and cool it, lowering the temperature gradually. BTW, my previous comment about loosening the screw and turning it will not work, you might be able to rotate it 180 degrees since it is held by a through bolt, but only if the bolt goes through the exact center of the shaft. A lot of times they were not so precise when drilling the through hole so you can only get the bolt through one way, if you rotate it 180 degrees the holes would not line up. Of course you could run a drill bit through the holes to get a bolt through when rotated but that would leave some play in the part.

  • @tomlewis6533

I have no idea how many of the teeth get "engaged" when setting the break but was wondering if you could have taken the through bolt out, rotated the gear half a turn and reset the bolt. Thinking you would be using the other half of the gear. Bush fix I know. Just a thought.

Typically a turnbuckle is a simple device for adjusting the effective length of a rod. It has left and right hand threads. The turnbuckle is usually centered in the rod which has corresponding left and right hand threads screwed in. A relevant example is a truss rod freight or passenger car made of wood.

A clean worksite is a safe worksite. As far as "Ready for Christmas," I am ready. It marks the end of the year for me, and I like to take off from work and enjoy the time in peace. If you're worried about gift giving and shopping, then you are missing the point of the holiday. You don't seem to be shy about your faith, so my advice would be to take the commercialism out of Christmas, and keep Christ in Christmas. That is something I am admittedly still working on myself. This year after years of not doing anything, I sent my brother's home made cookies using our Grandmother's hand written recipes. That is much better than a toy that is going to break, and be forgotten after a year. My hope is to keep it up so my nieces and nephew can enjoy the same love that my Grandmother gave to my brothers and me.

Have you thought about just loosening up the sprocket and rotating it 180 degrees so that the bad tooth is in a different location. We use this method on the starter rings on Model T's. The engine generally stops in a certain position; so, the worn section of the flywheel gear that is engaged by the starter usually starts in the same location and wears just one area of the the gear. I hope that this makes sense. Great videos btw.

The only exception to the threaded rod scenario is when the threads on each end of the rod are different number of tpi, for example if you had course threads on one end and fine threads on the other end. The rod could be turned for extremely fine adjustments. The valve rods on my 1.5" scale live steam mogul are made in this way.

I'd say Weld up or braze a new tooth, that thing isn't exactly a Swiss watch! : ) If your repair looks like it might wear out or fail, then look for a new part. I think the folks saying turn it 180' have a good point too.

Turnbuckles allow for finer adjustments. A Clovis requires a half turn to re-engage the pin

If the gear is pot metal not cast it will be more work welding it up . It can work but its a pain in the ass . If the new/old part is on hand and not a huge amount of cash buy it , If you have the new one then the old one becomes a backup for u .good luck 👍. Remember, in the end it is your $$ that is or isn't going to be spent.time is money 💰

After 60 years of working with hand tools, I always try to have on gloves when working with a wrench as mine seem to slip off the nut and my knuckles find something sharp near by. I cringe when I see you without some type of glove on your hands. Be safe and am enjoying seeing your railroad progress.

@@eastterminalrailway5975, Brian, I have a G scale model outdoor railroad in my back yard. Any time I go out to work on the brass track with a screw driver in my hand and no gloves, I end up cutting my fingers or hand somewhere as the screw driver slips and that darn sharp brass connector cuts me every time. I finally learned! =D=

Repair, buy used, or sometimes it is better to think of ways to improve what was a design shortcoming from a time years ago. 50-70's many things were built as was easiest to do when something was assembled and planned obsolesce was part of the engineering model. Too often little is thought of repair and maintenance of equipment once aged in the field.......

I bought the yellow shirt with ETR on the front and "I stop for all RR crossings". The shirt has been worn three times and the collar is coming apart. Very poor sewing. I don't want my money back, but buyer beware. Love the presentation and the classroom sessions. I can hardly wait for the first storage cars and a good coat of white paint in the cab.

I would clean the area in the Loco where the shaft is located, now that it is out and wire brush and prime the area before replacing the shaft. I opt for welding and getting the spare if available. That way 2021 has it's first spare part. 8-)

I believe you are correct on the turnbuckle vs clevis. BUT, with 40 years in Heavy Industrial maintenance we always called the big U shaped ones with a single pin a Shackle. Either I'm wrong or you are.

How about cleaning up the inside of the operators station and putting a coat or two of primer on to brighten it up? I know a full paint job is in the future, but this could be done in a day (I think) and would be a nice sign of progress.

A Real Turnbuckle has right hand threads on one end and left hand threads on the other. If both ends have right hand threads, turning the center will only move the center from one end to the other. It won't change the length.
