Update on Absolute Unit McGunit: I held him for another night and get him to the vet. His neurological symptoms improved greatly, and we felt comfortable releasing him back to his colony. We will be able to monitor him as we keep returning to try and get those kittens. What should we name this colony? Thoughts n prayers below:

shelters in areas that take cats are also at capacity. We found a cat in our backyard, friendly, matted, pretty clearly a dumped or lost cat a few years ago. Called every shelter in the area trying to find a home for her. Everyone basically said "you have her secured in your house? That means you can keep her indefinitely, have fun with your new cat!" Luckily we were, with great difficulty, able to keep her. It turns out she had giardia, neurological issues (head twitches, deafness, very occasional seizures), and arthritis, luckily we are doing alright financially and were able to cover everything except a neurologist visit.

If you're in an area where this is an option, it might be worth asking your vet about CBD to help with her neurological issues, specifically the seizures! I've heard it can help, and it helps me so figured I'd recommend💚 bless you for finding a way to keep & take care of her!

In Virginia Beach we can't even intervene to TNR colonies without the threat of prosecution. They deem feral cats as "companion" animals, so if you TNR, and release them it is considered abandonment and you can be charged. Certain municipalities also have feeding bans. It just sucks that we have the resources to help and are not allowed to.

Glad to hear it's not just my crappy county that only takes cats by appointment. It's how i ended up with a "puppy cat" rescue who was left outside at 7 or 8 months, untagged, not neutered. He is a handful and our old lady (14y) hates it still, been almost a year, but he's a sweet boy when he doesn't get overwhelmed.

3:26 That abandoned cat bed is very sad and poignant, it speaks of abandonment, neglect, and sadness.😢 Somebody loved a kitty enough to invest in a cat bed but then dumped cat, bed, and all outside like yesterday’s trash.😢

My first thought on the beefy Tom issue, is he allergic to the flea treatment? Poor guy, hope he gets better and has a great feral kitty life. Haha, my family's shop had a tux cat and they named her Mama, and her 1 kitten was Baby.

You have to bug your county/city, a friend who does TNR and the city/county FINALLY decided to help them and got a fund for TNR and they can do up to 90 cats once a month. So she catches as many as she can and gets them all fixed. I still don't understand people who don't want cats fixed, I'm like so it's better for them to multiply and more cats starving and freezing during the winter? My neighbor cussed me out for getting the cats fixed in our neighborhood and I'm like I don't care about you, this cat had 7 kittens in her last liter. I just don't understand people. Keep up the great work your doing!

I have 15 rescues indoors, and a group outdoors in a heated wooden home I built. In Colorado they WILL NOT HELP THESE ANIMALS. EVEN so called "rescue shelters" DO NOT RESCUE UNLESS THERE IS PLENTY OF $$$$$$$$$$. IM SICK OF THE NEGLECT. WHAT DOES THIS SAY ABOUT OUR SOCIETY???? Thank you for your work, doing the same. I’ve got ten rescues in my house and eleven rescues in my backyard enclosure with a heated shed for winter. California, so not a very cold winter. Wish I could help more but I’m by myself and that’s all I can afford. I do feed a small colony where I work. Wish I could TNR them but I just can’t afford it.

I'm really sorry to hear about your experience, and am grateful that you are taking care of so many. I am in Northern Colorado and have had the opposite experience. We had 2 kittens abandoned by a former tenant and were able to get them to a shelter same day. I've also worked with dumb friends league and gotten free spay/neuter surgeries. Lastly I work with a rescue who does a lot of great work with TNRing and have both a indoor cat rescue as well was a "working cat" where outdoor/feral cats can get jobs as a mouser, but also have access to warm conditions and a full belly. I agree with what a person said below that the issue is a lack of resources not a lack of empathy.

We think he’s been dumped. Our local shelters haven’t been helpful and we don’t have the money or resources to help him. All we can do is help him how we can and pray we find him some help. Thank you for helping me not feel so alone in this.

Hi, the shelter couldn't help taking the cat, but couldn't they give you any tips about any Vet or Vet tech or an experienced volunteer that could see the cat and tell you how to treat their illness? Because if they can't keep food in, they are going to get worse very quickly... In the meantime keep them warm, if they are skinny they are probably struggling to keep thei normal temperature of 38'-39' degrees C If I was you I would get on the phone and try to call around until I'd find someone who could tell me what's wrong, maybe its something that can be fixed with a medication. (Please do not improvise or give them human medication)

I know in my county, that we're lucky to have the county shelter that takes both cats and dogs. However they can only take so many cats because of space limitations, same with dogs. But they definitely try to do their best, and they have a lot of community support. But it definitely makes me upset to know other shelters dont do rhat.

In Germany many citys have passed a law stating that a cat must be neutered if it is an outdoor cat. So in these cities you can TNR to your hearts content, as a potential owner can't really protest the neutering as he/ she is breaking the law by owning an un- neutered outdoor cat.

I'm from WV and it's exactly the same way here with shelters & such. They don't accept cats nor have any other resources to help. I don't know of a single foster in my area & it's not from a lack of trying to find one. I recently found 3 newborn rejected by their mom & not a single person even replied that's listed online here. I have 9 of my own. I'm currently struggling fundwise or I'd do more. I don't even have power or water in my house bc I'm struggling so badly. I can't find ANY help for anything with cats around here & it's made me so depressed!

I think people have this misconception that cats are independent and can take care of themselves. The respect that people have for cats and their perceived intelligence gives rise to a belief that they don't need help or care. They're appex predators after all. They'll be just fine! No they won't without people to look out for them.

Thanks for the new video! I have a question that came to my mind when the preggo kitty kept showing up around the neighborhood. How do you know if the cat is feral and not just shy? Not saying, you misjudged. I'm really just interested. I am certain you have enough experience to tell the difference. I was really just interested if there is a tell-tale sign or if it would be clear if you caught the cat and it behaved really spicy? Like, how do you make sure you're not accidentally catching someone's shy, living mostly outdoors cat? Especially in such a situation where there won't be kittens that an owner might have looked forward to?

I'm in Texas. The system is broken. You are only allowed to surrender pets at the shelter in the city you live in, you aren't allowed to take them to a different shelter. So if your local shelter is full, you can only sign up to a waiting list that will take up to six months. The humane society is overwhelmed, you can make an appointment for a month from now, to get set up to then wait months before you can serender your pets. So you have to move on short notice, new place won't allow pets, there is no way you will legally surrender your pets in time, and you don't know what you can do but dump them. You aren't allowed to do anything else. The police need more profits by fining people for dumping pets, I guess. Google also lists completely ridiculous hours, like open 1-4pm and closed Sat. And Sun., but random different times for every shelter, but they aren't the correct hours, they actually have perfectly normal hours. It's weird.

The rescue situation sounds pretty dire down there. What a shithole South Carolina must be politically if your county are refusing to rescue poor cats. And the data seems to support this assessment: South Carolina yearly gets ranked among the worst places to vote - for routinely disenfranchising its citizens by attempting to suppress voting - and it’s currently ranked the fourth-worst state in the U.S.A. to live. Kudos to you for doing good work down there, you deserve medals both for stamina and for courage.
